Since it looks like we may end up in Myrtle Beach, can anyone recommend a campground. Something very close to the beach, if possible. Thanks!

It's been a number of years...

We used to go to Lakewood - and Ocean Lakes was right next to it... but if I remember correctly it cost a bit more.

Both are right on the beach - just south of Myrtle Beach... back THEN (15 years or so ) it really wasn't that far - so I imagine MB has spread out a bit more.

The last time we went to MB was January 2001 - and we didn't camp... I couldn't get over how BIG it had gotten!!

Have fun - we always enjoyed camping on the beach...

I'll dig around the net for another one we camped at North of there too - it didn't have tons of "activities" - but it was very pretty and really near the water too.

Thanks. If you read my huge dilemma thread, then you understand why we might be going. I don't think Myrtle Beach is where I would pick to go, but I don't know what to do right now.

I just went and read your dilema... it is a tough one isn't it?

Well - like I said - It's really been years since I went to MB. I can tell you that camping there was my first experience with camping and it spoiled me. My DH family went to Lakewood for years and years with their pop-up. It's a VERY family oriented campground with activities. There are a number of campgrounds that are literally on the ocean. I always found it a very peaceful vacation. In fact it spoiled me - I thought there were those types of campgrounds everywhere - and really there are not. The campgrounds have areas with trees a little further back - but it never was really far to walk to the beach.

How old are the girls? While it would certainly be different than vacationing at Disney - it can be a lot of fun.. there's LOTS to do in MB... I THINK it's still pretty family oriented from what I can tell. They may want to go - especially if they want to go to the competition.

We have also stayed at http://www.pirateland.com/ one thing I have noticed about all of the ocean front campgrounds, and we have stayed at several, is that all of the sights are very, very close together. We had a site in Pirateland that was on a corner, and right across from our camper was the sand dunes and the beach it was a great site. Hope this helps, and good luck with your decision.

That's PirateLand is the one just north of Lakewood isn't it? If it is .. is the little amusement park still there? If I remember right it's a VERY nice campground as well...

I know that Pirateland had a really nice little water park area with a lazy river, but i don't remember an amusement park, but we spent alot of time on the beach, and not inside the park. :) It was over the 4th of July weekend and it was wall to wall people so the beach was the only place that wasn't crowded.

Well like I said it was probably 15 - 20 years ago.... hahahaha

I saw the water park on the website - I LOVE lazy rivers...

If you like Lazy Rivers then you should definately consider MB Travel Park. This is the only place we stay when we go to MB but we only go after the crowds have left for the summer. It's got an outdoor pool with the Lazy River and also a heated indoor pool. It's right on the beach also but like all other beach front campgrounds, the sites are close together. After much deliberation and tinkering with the schedule, I have made the decision to keep the original Disney reservations for June13-23. We will not be attending the Myrtle Beach competition. Because of the way it was all done, I decided to not feel guilty about being in Disney. Thanks for the info, though. It looks as though we will be going to Myrtle Beach for competitions in the future.

I would highly recommend Ocean Lakes. They have everything but a lazy river. We seem to go there every year now for a few days. The staff is friendly and helpful.

We've gone to Ocean Lakes many times and we love it. There's lots to do in Myrtle Beach!

We spend every Easter week at Lakewood in our camper and a long weekend in October at Ocean Lakes (in a friend's house). Both are nice, but I agree the pool, lazy river, etc. is much nicer at Ocean Lakes. There are a lot more rental properties at Ocean Lakes. I haven't stayed at Pirateland in a longggggg time, so I can't comment.

The amusement park that was between Pirateland and Lakewood is gone. I don't think it ever did very well. Everyone likes to go to the two main amusement areas. Broadway at the Beach now has Jimmy Buffet's Margareteville restaurant. It's similar to the one in Orlando.
