My vacuum bit the dust. I've gone through 3 vacuums in 10 years. What is my problem? :confused3 This was a Hoover windtunnel canister vac, too.

Any good recommendations?

Does anyone know where I can test drive a Dyson? Are they heavy? What about the canister version? and why the heck does consumer reports not like them?!

Thanks.

I don't have any advise, but I do know that they don't last like they use to. I had the sameone for about 15 years (it was a cheapie Hoover) and now I seem to replace them every 3 or 4 years.

I *love* my dyson. I got the yellow upright for christmas. You can "test" drive them most anywhere I think...Linens-n-things, sears, etc...

Not sure why consumer reports doesn't like them...but I'm still amazed at the amount of dust my dyson picks up each week.

I don't find it super heavy at alll...I'm sure you'll get a lot of posts here from dyson lovers.

I don't have 1 to recommend, but I will advise against one, the Hoover Windtunnel.

We've had it for a couple years, It is always getting clogged and the filters are 30 bucks a pop and need to be replaces often. Granted, we've got 2 cats (long hair & kitty litter.) I'm just glad my dh is "handy" and can fix it himself. It does do a good job sucking up the dirt.

My Mom had had her Electrolux since the mid 1970's and it's still gowing strong! I don't know if the more current models are as durable.

I just bought a Eureka upright that uses bags. The only thing I don't like is the built in hose is a little short but it's really nice otherwise. The first few times I vacuumed, I was amazed at the stuff left behind by my old cleaner. The old one was a Fantom lightning bagless. Turned out to be a piece of junk and the company went out of business. I've read that people who are sensitive to dust shouldn't use a bagless model.

This is what I have (bought from Amazon) Walmart has it for about the same price.

I didn't know you could try them out at Linen-n-things! Maybe I'll call and check before I haul myself over there. I really want this vacuum to be as good as the hype. I haven't heard negative reports about Dysons except that one person had trouble pushing it until he/she figured out how to set the floor settings and then fixed that problem.

I don't want to jump on the Dyson bandwagon without making sure I'm comfortable with that decision. It's a lot of money for a vacuum. (Not that my $300 Hoover windtunnel wasn't :sad2:

well, don't quote me on that...I know they have them out on the floor...(as I lifted one up once and it WAS heavier then my old hoover). I'm sure they'd let you try it out though.

hell - if you are paying $400 for a vacuum...you should be able to try it first!

ETA - OH - My mom bought mine at Kohl's...she opened up a kohl's charge and got like 10 or 15% off...so look into that too if you are interested.

I like my Hoover Windtunnel (the kind with the bag, not the bagless one). I really like it. It is heavy, so I do wish I had paid a bit more for the self propelled one. I've only had to change the filter once. And it's only gotten cloged once, mainly due to all the dog fur that Missy sheds! It does a pretty good job. The only thing I don't like about it is that when you pull on the extension hose, the whole vacuum tips over, and it doesn't take much to make it fall.

Once it dies, though, I do want to try a Dyson! As good as my Hoover is, I think the Dyson would do a better job with all the pet fur I have to deal with.

We must be kindred spirits because I've gone through more vacuums than anyone I know!! We are thinking of putting in central vac.

Run by your local Sears. They have Dysons and others, and they will let you try them out.

Found that nothing beats an Electrolux. On the expense side but when spreading cost over service life comes out real cheap as they can last for decades. Parts for older models always seem available. Picked up hair from shedding Siberian Huskey and from Sheltie without any problems.

I've been using my Eureka Boss since 1994.....bag, not canister....it was a wedding shower gift (from 1993 that I waited to use for in my house) I've never had a problem with it. my sister bought a Eureka (actually I bought it for her) and it died within 2 years! :confused3 I guess they are making vacuums like tv's these days......disposable!!

I thought that most sweepers used suction. I'm surprised that you have one that "bit" the dust. :rotfl2:

I love my Miele. I bought a small canister a couple years ago and won't use any other brand now. I just bought a larger canister with a power brush for my new carpet. This new one was $799.

I have a Miele. Best vacuum I've had.
I agree. The Miele has the strongest suction on bare floors then ANY other vacuum made. When looking for a good vacuum, you need to find one that does wonders on bare floors and that will make a better vacuum on carpet too. I can't believe you are the first to even mention a Miele besides myself. The put Dyson to shame.

I LOVE my Oreck! ::yes:: About the same price and wieghs about 10 pounds less than a Dyson! :)

I have been wanting a new vacuum for a long while.
After reading the Dyson thread, I went to Kohl's with my 15% coupon I got with my charge card. I ended up getting the yellow one for $347. taxes in.
:cool1:
Let me tell you my new Dyson really SUCKS!

It's the greatest vacuum I've ever owned.
I love my Dyson!

I can give a recommendation on what NOT to get. I despise my Kenmore PowerMate vacuum. It is a blue and steel grey cannister model. It was under warranty when the motor went, so that was replaced at no cost. Now it smells like it will catch fire if I try to vacuum the whole house at one time. So it is upstairs one day, downstairs another day. Just for fun, I'm gonna do the whole house sometime and just try to burn this sucker (oops--that would be non-sucker) up. I need something that will go after dog hair, but I can't justify chucking out the old vacuum yet. But if we get new carpet in the near future the vacuum goes!
