My Travel Agent just requested an accessible room for us

I know this is a strange thing to be excited about, but for the first time, we'll be in an accessible room at Disney World (the Polynesian, to be exact).

I think I'm excited about it because it means that things will be much easier and more convenient for me and the ECV that I'm renting from an off-site company, and therefore will have with me at all times.

I'm looking forward to our trip in 4 weeks, even more now than I was before.

What has been your experience with requesting accessible rooms at a Disney resort? Was your request always met? My Travel Agent said that it's a special needs request and therefore *should* be met. I'm hoping so. :)

My question would be do you really need an accessible room. I have never hzd any problems in parking an ECV in at room at WDW, as long as tehre were only two people in the room. It may haverequired some furinture to be moved around, but all the entry doors are sufficiently wide.

When you say accessible room, do you mean one with a raised toilet, grab bars at the toilet, and a tub with grab bars or would it be a room with an oversize bathroom for maneuvering a wheelchair and not only the raised toilet with grab bars but the roll-in shower?

The ones with the roll-in shower are the ones in most critical supply.

I actually have no idea. :confused3 My travel agent knows my situation, and she suggested the accessible room. I don't need to be wheeled into the shower, but being able to just walk into one would be great. However, even just having the hand railings in a regular tub/shower would be very helpful.

I think I'll have her cancel this request. I do not want to exclude anyone else from getting an accessible room if they'd need it more than I would.

Don't worry about excluding someone else if the features of an accessible room will are something you need. I'd just find out if your t/a reserved a fully accessible room ( roll-in shower ) which means there will be no tub, if that's an issue for the rest of the family. A fully accessible room at the Poly also limits your location. There are other rooms that have tub with rails that are utililized when someone can take a few steps but don't need to transfer into a roll-in shower from a w/c. A shower bench can be brought so you don't have to climb into a tub and this room will have a tub/shower combination. As was mentioned though the room will still accommodate your w/c since there's no difference in size in an accessible vs. regular room. There will be a bigger bathroom in a roll-in shower room which takes away the space in the room itself. I know you've been to the Poly before so you're aware those rooms are HUGE. I'm glad to hear you're looking forward to your next trip- four weeks away seems really "real"!~---Kathy

Thank you so much for your reply :) I will contact my travel agent today and find out exactly what kind of room she has reserved.

P.S. I love the picture in your signature of "Princess Skye" :sunny:
