Hello Everyone,
I just thought that I would share my thoughts on the May 28th Cruise. We just returned home to NC yesterday and WOW what a great vacation we had. We were in staterooms 5516 and 5518. Our day started out leaving the airport on the Disney transfer buses. Our driver, got lost - haha. He had to turn the bus around and go back toward the airport and then turn around again to get on the correct road. Anyway, this was new to him.. No big deal. Once at the port, we were given a boarding pass which had the number 4 on it. We checked in at the Castaway Club Desk - Very Easy. There were security officers with K-9 dogs extremely visible! Walking back and forth through the port looking for drugs.... Finally, they started calling boarding pass numbers. Everyone with boarding pass with 1 could board and then 2 and so on....Finally, it came to us. Oh, By the Way - No Picture Taking allowed in the port. Signs are everywhere inside. So my husband and I walked outside to see them load the boat and I took a picture - well that was a bad idea! I got yelled at by security - NO PICTURES. There are also, NO SIGNS outside, but just thought I'd warn you! Anyway, we boarded the ship on Deck 4 and went straight to lunch, boy what a great way to start out the cruise. The weather was really cool. A LOT cooler than it was when we left NC! We had great surpises waiting for us in our stateroom. Captain Mickey Hats, scarves and hands - How cool! Our Castaway Club Beach Blanket was really nice too! Our servers were Dobo from bulgaria and Maria from England and the Head server was Ronald from the Netherlands. We were so disappointed!!! Ronald was Fantastic! Maria was okay. Dobo was just quiet. He took our orders, delivered our food, seemed insulted when we didn't like something or the kids didn't finish their food - I just didn't like him! Our first cruise was fantastic our severs were perfect. Our servers this time had BIG shoes to fill. I didn't know if they were really that bad or were my expectations too high. Maria asked us every night what we wanted to drink, our first servers knew without asking every night what we wanted. At least twice a night someones glass would be empty during the course of a meal and she would ask, would you like something else to drink? And I would just think, Well, no..... Let me choke down this risotto and lamb with no beverage! Anyway.... For my sons birthday, I talked to Ronald and told him that he would not eat the "Mousse" cake that they were presenting for birthdays and really all that we would want is Vanilla Ice Cream or a sugar cookie or Mickey Ice Cream. That would be perfect. And Ronald insisted on preparing him a special Vanilla Cake - Yummy!!!! Vanilla Cake layers with Vanilla Cream and icing - WOW, Unbelievable! It was perfect. If you are celebrating, just let your team know a day in advance and they will custom make a cake, any kind to your liking... Perfect!

Anyway.... We decided not to do excursions and to just get off of the ship and find a beach. This worked out Wonderful!!!!

Puerto Vallarta.... When you get off of the ship, walk toward the flea market and cross the street. Between the building and a fence is a sidewalk. Take that sidewalk to the end and security will let you in the fence. Tell them you are with the cruise. That is the Krystal Resort. VERY NICE. It is FREE. You can use the facility as long as you are purchasing beverages - $3 US Dollars including tip per Coke. The pool is amazing. It is ocean front and they have chairs with umbrellas or lounge chairs at the pool. or lounge chairs in the pool! Restrooms were very clean. This resort is an entire community in itself. There is a giant playground beside the pool and the pool has 2 swim up bars, bridges, volleyball, basketball, checkers, islands, VERY NICE.

Mazatlan.... Take the tram to the terminal. Walk out of the terminal to the front gate and turn left. Walk less than a mile, about 10-15 minutes. Nice Walk, shaded and on a sidewalk. You will pass the Mexican Naval Yard and the sidewalk will turn to dirt at this point turn right and you will see water. Purchase a water taxi ticket for $1 US Dollar/person. Take the water taxi to Stone Island. Once at the island, take the taxi to the beach. It was $3.50 for 7 people. It is VERY quiet. WARNING.... Two weeks ago there was a jellyfish infestation... The jellyfish are gone, but they layed eggs. There are tons of eggs in the water. The eggs sting! My son, husband and two nephews were eaten alive by the eggs! Thankfully, a very nice mexican women was prepared. She cleaned them with bottled water, then alcohol and then sprayed them with WD-40. She said the WD-40 creates a sylicone protection. So, Add WD-40 to your packing list!!! My oldest nephew had a tare in his swimsuit from the right side of his leg to his crotch from the fish - Thank goodness for the swimsuit!!!!

Cabo San Lucas.... We got off of the ship and walked to the Cabo Wabo Cantina. Then to the beach. When you get off of the ship, follow the pier all the way around until it turns to parking lot and then follow the parking lot around to the sand and there is the beach. Its a Very Nice 15 minute walk. We rented Jet Skiis. We had 5 people that wanted to ride so we rented two. 3 people on 1 and 2 on the other. It was $40 US Dollars for 40 minutes/jet ski. This beach was very nice. The sand was soft and didn't stick to your skin. We really enjoyed it.

As far as being on the ship... My only complaint was that my son who is 8 almost 9 didn't want to go to the kids club. And outside of the pool, ping pong, basketball and shuffleboard, there was nothing for him to do. He is an avid golfer and the chip in golf that they had was for ages 12 and up. He said this was his last Disney Cruise. Next time he wants to do Royal Carribean.

The Art of Entertaining classes that I attended were fantastic!! We learned to make dessert, appetizer, entree, mixed drinks and sip wine correctly. We also took a tour of the galley - really interesting!

Overall, we had a good time. The time difference took a toll on us. Coming from the East Coast and loosing 3 hours to California and then loosing 2 more going into Mexico was really hard!

After our cruise, we returned to the airport, checked our baggage and was off at 1:00 to meet our limo driver. We rented a limo from A List Limo in Beverly Hills. We went on a 6 hour tour of the area. It was neat to see several of the sites. We were able to stop and get photos of several places. My son wanted to see Muscle Beach, so we spent about an hour walking around people watching - Very Interesting Place!!!

Our flight didn't leave LAX until 11:00pm... The airport was less than desireable. The food choices are extremely limited! We walked to the Encounter across the street. If you flew in at night. It is the Really tall dome restaurant on stilts with a purple light all the way around it. We thought it would be cool to eat there at night and watch the planes. The menu was really expensive which wouldn't have been near as bad, but the selection was very LIMITED and the place stunk. It smelled like old seafood. Really gross. We decided to leave and have McDonalds at the airport.

We are happy to be home. Just thought I'd share some of our highlights... :flower:

Thanks for the report!

I'm really grateful for the Mazatlan info. We don't have any excursions planned for that port. So your tips are helpful.

Thanks for the report. We had Ronald as our server in October and he was great. I'm glad he got promoted to Head Server but I'm also sorry that we won't be able to request him as our server in August.

WE did the Disney sponsered City tour in PV, and my 21 year old daughter finally had had enough of winding roads, and ships, and so she through up on the bus, in a bag. I felt so sorry for her. She was miserable. The bus takes you up a winding road up to a wonderful quaint resturant. It was very good, they were so hospitable to us all. MY DD, got sick there too, but by the next day on her 21st b/day, she was better. WE don't drink, so it wasn't that she had too much to drink the day before her b/day. She does get car sick tho, and I think it was too much movement for her body.
MAZ-- we did the tour with Mazatlan Franks--Tomato, it was very good. He took us to gated community, wonderful homes, golden zone to go shopping and a GREAT lunch on the beach. The BEST shrimp!!
Cabo, we just walked close to the pier and shopped, walked to the mall, it is around a 20 minute walk, but once there, you would think you were in an UPscale mall in America. Didn't seem like Mexico at all. WE didn't do Beaches at all. My kids didn't want too. While I liked Mexico, I am ready to do this West Coast again, but to Alaska. Got real tired of the beggars, "hey lady", trying to sell you anything.." Pracically Free" they would say.... Had a wonderful time, and BTW, DD was well, for her 21st b/day and they had made her a special white cake with layers of wonderful frosting. Servers Roberto and Paola were the BEST>> Saw Dwayne from our first cruise, and he remembered us, or so he said, and while I liked him,I was very glad we had Roberto and Paola, I wanted to bring them both back with me. We had a great time. Have fun to all.
The children made me sad begging on the streets too, trying to sell you gum. My 18 year old daughter wanted to go and give them money when we were leaving, but she couldn't find them at that point.
But as much as I loved my trip to Mexico, I got the biggest thrill coming back to Port and seeing a HUGE AMERICAN Flag waving so proudly in the air. It made me cry. After only seeing the Mexican flag for days, it was so good to see it waving so proudly. :cheer2:

at the krystal resort can you go down to the beach also or is it only pools?

Oh, you can go to the beach as well. In fact, we walked straight to the beach once we were on the resort property. We paid a man $1 US Dollar to sit in the chairs under the umbrella. After about 20 minutes, we ventured up to the pool and the man told us that as long as we were purchasing drinks from the bar, we could visit for free. So we ordered some Cokes. The pool is ocean front and I would say that there were approximately 15 Cabana type umbrellas with 2 chairs under each. It really was very nice.

I agree completely! We taught our boys to say, "NO!, Gracias!" and most of the time they would just leave. The kids were to the point that when they would just see someone coming our way, they would yell NO! Gracias!, just to keep them walking!!

How did your daughter do Friday? My family was quite uncomfortable. No one actually got sick, but sure felt uneasy. The boat was really moving! The family down the hall from us had to borrow some dramamine from us and spend the last day in bed. I felt very sorry for them!

Wondering if you can fill me in on the Art of Entertaining Classes. Is that something you sign up for on the ship? Are there other classes? What is the cost? I have to keep these things in mind before I go booking too many spa, excursion, dinner, etc... reservations.

The art of entertaining classes were a lot of fun. You do not have to sign up, just show up. They were usually at 10:30 and about 2:15 or 2:30 in Studio Sea.

On the first day, they had a chef, chef Panda from India come and show us how to prepare an appetizer (Crab Cakes) and another wine person came and taught us about which type of wine would be best with this dish and how to sample wine using all of your senses. We sampled both the crab cakes and wine. I don't like Crab, but these were fantastic!! They did not taste fishy at all.

One day, Chef Panda made dessert and we had desset wine.

We had an Entree and Wine also....

One the final day, they handed out tickets to the Galley tour to everyone in attendance. Otherwise at 12:00, you would have had to wait in line at shore excursions and hope to get one. They are free. At each class, they hand out the recipes for the dish being prepared so that you can prepare it at home.

They also had towel folding to learn how to make the animals and napkin folding classes.

Were you able to take an excursion to Caletas Island in Puerto Vallarta?

Right off of the top of my head, I don't recall reading anything about caletas island. We knew that we were not going to take an official excursion so I did not pay that close of attention to what they had to offer.

Maybe someone more familiar with the official excursions would know better. When I get to the bottom of my "stuff" suitcase, I will search through the excursion papers and see if that is listed....

:teeth: Although we aren't sailing until July 2, we did do the Las Caletas tour a few years ago on our Princess cruise. It is not an island. It is a beach that is only accessible by boat. You take about 45 min boat trip to the beach and they offer juice and snacks on the way over there and you can schedule a massage. Once there it is basically a beach day. They did have a cooking demonstration and a nature hike. They normally offer snorkeling and we did the kayaking but (AGAIN) they told everyone to stay out of the water because of JELLYFISH!! We could see them from our kayak and my DH still talks about how fun I was to kayak with because I was afraid he was going to dump us in the water!! I think it ranks up there with him snorkeling with me on his back at Stingray City. :teeth: We then had a nice buffet lunch and more beach time and then time to go back. The boat is a lively place on the way back with music and deck hands dancing. Then, once everyone is liquored up they pass the tip bucket. :earboy2: It was a nice beach day but long so this time we are trying the beach break as it is a shorter day and we will have the kiddos with us and we can get back early to give them a nap. Enjoy..what ever you decide to do. Amy :flower:

TCHoney: What time did you arrive at the port for embarkation & what time did you actually board? I'm trying to figure out what time we should arrive at the port in San Pedro.

Thanks

Ya you are right, I guess I thought it was an island because we had to get there only by boat. I went to Las Caletas when I stayed at Nuevo Vallarta for a week and had such a great time. I love the limeade they make there!!! I went diving and it was a great place to go diving at. I was just wondering if Disney was offereing this as an excursion or not because it was so much fun. We also went when the whales were there so we got to see so many whales, what an experience.

We arrived at the port around 10:30 via Disney Transfers from LAX and we boarded at about 1:15, we were on Boarding Pass #4. :flower:

TcHoney: My family was uncomfortable too. NO one sick, but wow, I was still swaying days after. But talking to others who have done the Mexican Rivera before, they say, it is always rocky going back into California. Rough seas, going against the current, and the wind coming down from Alaska all of those together add up to Rocky. So, I guess all of you should prepare yourselves, and get the dramamine. We were fine the whole rest of the trip. But, I would do it again, in a heart beat.

am interested in this also! thanx for the info! wonderful trip report...really enjoyed reading it!! :flower:

Heidi,
Las Caletas Hideaway is listed as an offered excursion. It's listed as 7.5 hours, meeting time 8:30am, ages 10+ $75 and ages 3-9 $45. It's quite popular and books quickly. Do you know about accessing your ressie on disneycruise.com and booking your shore excursions? I may not have this quite right but you can book 75 days ahead, or if you're a CC member 90 days, or if your on the REAS package 120 days ahead. Several posters said you had to be paid in full, but I remember reading at least one poster that said you didn't.

We took this excursion on RCCL a couple of years ago. We really liked it too. We didn't have our children with us then. And, we had jellyfish in the water too!
I think it was mid-June. I don't have any idea when the full moon was.

Sherry

Thanks Sherry!!! Now I have to talk my parents into booking this excursion for them!!! I would love for them to see what I saw there.
