As far as I know - just about everyone here knows that Norm and I were not only born in Key West, but know quite a bit about it since we still go back "home'' every few months not only to check on family, but what "stuff" is being offered to those that visit there - now I know that I have been very hard about our hometown, but I also want those that question my honor about Key West, that Norm and I love our Key West tho the changes have been completely hard to get use to - we do not enjoy or like the "stuff" that does happen down there and very little is done to change it to make it more of a family place - this is why I do get kinda hepped up when I know what children can be exposed to down there - I know it can happen anywhere but you have to realize that Norm and I were raised in a paradise where anything that could make the island stressful was not discussed and everything was done to keep the island a paradise and stress-free - children could wander anywhere on the island and someone was always looking out for us without our knowledge -only because we were surround by the ocean and gulf and fishing, swimming etc was our playground entertainment - the places I do recommend, is due to the fact we have checked it out and found it to be upstanding and honest - by the way I still have the Key West packets if anyone wants them - they are no cost except for the stamps to send for it - worth it since you won't be going in blind - you can drop me a note at snelsonbrown@aol.com - I have mentioned this numberous of times and I have had good feedback that it has helped make routes and plans while down there - too there is coupons etc that will help -
I want those that do go to Key West to have a good time - it is full of history and can be very interesting - i have mentioned number of times of my grandfather teaching Pauline Hemingway how to speak spanish and how Mr. Hemingway just didn't like us kids - he kept a bag of rocks by his door, not to throw at any animals, but at us kids - sometimes his aim was good :D
Yes I did know him - Norm was Tennessee Williams postman and that was very interesting time for him - yep he knew Mr. Williams very well - also norm was given a real piece of eight by Mel Fisher from his first find - we too got to know President Truman very well and enjoyed his visited to Key West - so we do know quite a bit about the history also.
Anyhow if we can help in any way, just drop us a note - we would be more than happy to answer any questions.
Anyhow hope everyone had an awesome New Year and may 2004 keep everyone safe and happy.
Much love

Dearest Shirley, your childhood sounds wonderful! You and Norm should write a book. I would love to read more.

Happy New Year to you, sweetie. We're so happy you are here!

Shirley, your love of your home town comes across beautifully through your words :) My mother used to talk about her home town in NYC when she was growing up there in the 1920's - 1930's. She said the same kinds of things, how you felt safe and everyone looked out for everyone else's kids.

Thanks for the warm words about Key West. When I read them, it makes me want to visit the historic places that you talk about :)

EVerything you and Norm told us about Key West was true and the sites you recommended that we take in were also! Such a lovely place to see when you know where to look beyond the hedonistic!

Sure think that writing a book was a good idea ---- why not?!

Shirley, I had to chuckle about your story of Mr Hemingway's bag of rocks:D
He was a cranky guy, it seems. My great grandfather lived on a farm next to Paulines family in Piggott, Arkansas. Seems our family has the same type of stories about Earnest when he and Pauline lived there.:D

I love to write (as anyone can see :-) --anyhow just about everyone one of mine and Norman's classmates have written about Key West even to the nicknames that everyone was known by - everyone was given a name at birth, but they all were known by nicknames - my father was known as hamburger john, his nephew bambilia, norm was cucuracha, there was ti-ta ma-chine that sold shoes from his bike - well these were to name a few - it was funny about Mr. Hemmingway - I remember him so well in those long underwear shorts with tee shirt running all over his yard and throwing rocks - the boys use to drive him nutso - I have never seen the inside of his home for I was so scared of him, thought his spirit would still haunt me :D
Anyhow is welcome to the packages - all you need is a large manilla envelope, with about $3.50 worth of stamps on it - self address it and mail it to me -= I fill it up and send it back to you -
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Much love
shirle and Norm

Shirley, How much postage do you need to send a package to Canada?
Thanks, Jane

Thanks Shirley. It's so nice that you take care of all us visitors to Key West. We are going on the 7 night Disney Western cruise in July. I plan on sending for one of your packets in March or so. I also plan on getting a gift basket for my son and his best friend who is going with us on the cruise. You did such a GREAT job on the baskets you made for us the first time we cruised a few years ago. Thanks again Shirley!

Key West has lot in Common with Put-In-Bay, Ohio.
Both thrive on two items as seen in store windows. PIB has Beer and t-shirts while Key West seems to be bongs and sex toys. Did I enjoy going down the street with my kids in Key West? No way! I knew Key West was eclectic from my first visit but this was to much.
P.S.

This is a period, . , please use them.

Key West has ALWAYS had ecentricas. Yes Rob I agree with you on the "stuff" you see ON DUVAL STREET, but if you get away into the back streets of KW, you see so much more - I tell folks where to wander to minger with the ol' conchs and learn real history of Key West and you really have a good time - Duval street is very commerical and nothing is going to change that - Anyhow I am very sorry that you experienced whatever you did especially with children in tow - all I can say is that I am sorry - wish I could say it wouldn't happen again.
Anyhow to get the packets of Key West, please mail a large, self addressed with about $3.50 worth of stamps to The Perfect Gift, 6550 North Attlantic Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida 32920 - the phone number is 800-950-4559 if you have any questions that Norm or I could help with. It is best to wait about 2 to 3 months before sailing, for I update the information every few months since businesses open and close faster than I can say Key West.
Norm and I will be down there next month for a few days - so if there is anything anyone wants checked out, all you have to do is drop me a note or just call me - ok
We are going to try and plan the trip to Key West when the Magic is there and try to get together for a short meet.
Anyhow everyone have a great weekend and most of all an awesome 2004.
Much love
Shirley and Norm

Shirley your packet of info was a great help in planning our trip in May of '03. While we didn't have any kids with us we did have two very sheltered adults (known as my in-laws) and were able to plan a fun day for us and them. We did the trolly on our own, the Southernmost Point, the Butterfly museum, Hemmingway's House, and some shopping. We must have passed most of the "adult bits" while on the trolley as we didn't see anything that bothered us. We also didn't bother to go down to Mallory Square for sunset - instead we enjoyed it from deck 10!

I'm glad we're going back in Dec. on that cruise. Thanks for all your help and for sharing your wonderful childhood memories of this fascinating place.

Peace and love to you and Norm.

Rob needs to look past punctuation mistakes and learn the difference between to, too and two...I learned that in 2nd grade. I don't like to pick at people, but why end your post with a mean P.S.? I am trying to relate in this post that nobody is perfect and I am sure Key West has many historical places to see that do not include Bongs and sex toys.
Anyway, I enjoyed my visit to Key West last yr and would love to go back and have more time to visit it. If I do get the chance, I will email you first Shirley. Melissa
