My take on the Wilderness Lodge

Just got back from 7 days at the Lodge and loved it.
Thought I would jot down a few likes and dislikes and other observations.

Stayed in standard room 5099 overlooking the lobby and very near the elevators. Personally I would never pay extra for a view, it was too hot on the balconies and too many bugs, on the other hand hearing the lobby music every time we left the room and looking out over the lobby was cool. Also the 5th floor has a large balcony overlooking the courtyard as well as a cozy fireplace and lounge area. We never heard much noise from the lobby or restaurant. When we stay again I will request the same room.

Transportation

Do not call the transportation button on the room phones, it is more than a year behind and will get you lost, read the signs at the bus stops and boat docks for the latest info. Overall I would rate the transportation at the Lodge behind the All Stars, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Carribean Beach, and Contempory but better than Grand Floridian, Poly, Yacht & Beach Club, Boardwalk and Swan and Dolphin. I should have prefaced these ratings with the fact that we do not have small children and transportation to the Magic Kingdom was not a priority. It seemed quicker to get to Epcot by taking the bus to the TTC and then the monorail to Epcot rather than the bus to epcot, although we usually took whichever one came first.

Food

I thought Whispering Canyon was good though noisy and the all you can eat skillets are one of the best values at Disney. Roaring Forks was small and typical but served it's purpose. Artist Point has a limited menu and didn't appeal to our tastes so we didn't try it. California Grill is a short boat ride away and has excelent food although the best meal we had was at Spoodles, the Scallops Au Gratin yum. Did the Luau at the Poly, food was blah but the show was fun.

Extras

The dial up for AOL was the worst I've ever experienced, tried all the local numbers and kept getting booted, front desk adjusted the billing $15 for all the disconnects, actually they added $15 to my bill but a phone call straightened things out.

See Cirq Du Solie if you haven't, it is worth the money and is every bit as good as the two out in Vegas.

The airconditiong at the Lodge is kept very cool which I loved after sweltering in the hot sun.

All in all I liked the Lodge very much and would recommend it.

If I may ask..where did you eat after Cirque du Soliel? Can't figure out where to go. I agree about the transporation from WL and the not paying for a view there...don't think it is worth it. Great review! Thanks!

Thanks for the very informing review! Hope to make WL our next stay next year!

If you go to the early showing of La Nouba you can eat at the House of Blues which is right outside the theater. They don't take resies though. Bongos is also right there.

I have been wondering about the transportation. Would you say it was bad enough to stay at one of the other hotels? We have stayed at a few of the others and have never had a problem.

It really wasn't bad at all, the boat and some of the busses stop at Fort Wilderness also but then most resorts share their bus transportation with other resorts. It's not nearly as bad as Swan, Dolphin, Yacht Club, Beach Club, and Boardwalk all sharing a bus. And the bus stops first at WL and drops off first at WL so there's always a seat on the way and a quicker exit coming back.

Thank you for the information. We have stayed at the AKL and CBR and have had very good experiences with the transportation system. I had just heard some bad comments about the transportation at WL. This will be our first stay there and we are planning way ahead of time so we could switch resorts if the transportation was an issue. So many people seem to love the WL that I thought we would give it a try.

We stayed at WL this past August and were pleasantly surprised with the transportation. Oftentimes we were running to catch the boat or bus as it was pulling up. whether at the resort or the park. The only problem we had was the bus to DTD -- it was at 10 in the morning and we waited 45 minutes. Since it is also the bus to Typhoon Lagoon, it was puzzling.

My family fell madly in love with WL. We had a free upgrade to courtyard view which included a view of the pool, geyser and Bay Lake. Would I pay extra? Probably not, because the AP rate for a standard view, $114, was at the upper limit of our budget.

The only change I would make, if I could, is to expand the offerings at Roaring Forks. Pizza and burgers got boring very quickly. I missed the variety of an All Stars food court.

I would agree on the transportation. If going to Epcot, take either the TTC bus or the Epcot bus, whichever comes first. The only time I wished we had taken a car instead of bus was to AK... that was a long trip.
