My take on the whole "D23" program

Okay,

I've had some time to process this and think about it (and to calm down a little), and here's what I think.

Based on the conference call that Disney had today, I think there may be a genuine desire on their part to do something unique and special for fans - I just think they completely screwed the roll out and presented it in a way that doesn't take a number of factors into account, namely the current economy.

My gripe with Disney for quite a while has been the complete lack of a loyalty program, similar to the loyalty programs offered by virtually every other hospitality company. Hilton, Marriott, Starwood - even Holiday Inn - offer frequent guests perks for repeat business. Had THAT been a part of D23, then I think this would have been received A LOT better.

I also think it's ridiculous that they wanted to create something special for the "fan" community, yet they never consulted with any of us in the process? Do they really believe that they have their finger on the pulse of their fans? If they do, I'm guessing todays roll out was a bit of a rude wake up call for them.

Instead, they chose to focus on merchandise (and I'm sorry, but the $850 pen on the home page was just a really really bad decision - the pen is probably lovely, and worth $850 - but it just sends the wrong message and far too often, perception becomes reality).

I'll admit that I joined this morning - not because I liked the program per se, but because I wanted to see what it was all about in an effort to fairly evaluate it and to keep track of the developments - in HOPES that the program will evolve over time and become something far more inclusive of the larger fan community as a whole.

I know something about botched roll-outs of new things. I seem to remember my first pass at podcasting was not exactly met with the warm embrace of the DIS community. But I listened to the feedback, even the venemous, hateful feedback and I tried to 're-adjust' in an effort to give people what they were looking for. I think it worked.

I believe that there are well meaning people at Disney that wanted to put together something special, but in spite of their claims of 'reading discussion boards and knowing what the fan community wanted', they missed the mark with a large number of fans and potential D23 members.

They missed the fact that some of us feel like we pay more and more every year for our Disney fix and get less and less in return. They missed the fact that we MISS the Magic Kingdom Club and the perks it used to offer. They missed the fact that we MISS our ever evaporating Annual passholder discounts and special offers. We spend A LOT of money on Disney vacations and we're not asking for 'a hand out' as some have described it, but rather we're looking to feel a little bit better about the money we spend in the midst of the worst economic meltdown in history. They MISSED that we're all a little nervous about the economy right now and being able to justify our 'Disney fix' to our spouses is becoming increasingly more difficult. They MISSED the fact that we are, in reality, their highest affinity group and if they give us a GOOD reason - a REASON that makes sense to OUR bottom line first and thiers second, that we'll beat a path to their door and they'll acheive the monetary gains their corporate charter requires and we'll feel much better about spending our money in the process.

In short - they MISSED quite a bit in three years of 'researching' what Disney fans want, in my opinion. I don't claim to speak for all Disney fans - I don't even claim to speak for some - I speak only for myself and these are my feelings and observations.

I realize this probably isn't the rant you guys want, but I'll admit that I'm more disappointed than I am angry right now. I had much higher hopes for this program. BUT, if they are genuine in their sentiment for wanting to create something special for the fans, then they will do what Disney has always done - and adjust the product to fit the demand.

I'm writing this from on board the Disney Wonder - remembering what this ship was like when it first sailed - the number of problems and challenges it had - and how Disney has constantly adjusted and refined it to become what can arguably be called the best cruise line in the industry. I distinctly remember in the very early days of DCL's life, there were a LOT of complaints on our boards about it, and many people swore they would never set foot on a Disney ship again. Let's hope the same approach that made DCL such a success is applied to D23. Lets hope that Disney arrogance isn't behind this new endeavor and that they will listen to what we REALLY want, not what they want us to want.

Of course there are the fans that will buy anything Disney puts out and I embarassingly admit I'm one of them and have been for years. But I'm also part of a growing number of fans who feel that our loyalty - and our business - is not appreciated. "Thank You's" aren't something Disney does well. Their general attitude is, and has been for some time, that is our privelige to do business with them, and not their privelige to have us as their customers. This program only reinforces that perception.

So, I'll try and keep an open mind - and if they show a real willingness to adjust this program to include more of us, to show REAL appreciation for our business and support, then I'll become their biggest advocate on this. If not, I'll remain a vocal critic - no matter who likes it.

Pete

I like your response. I joined as well just because I wanted to follow the program and could spare 80 bucks (850 not so much...) I truly hope it morphs into something better. Like you said though, if they had a rewards program like some major hotels, I think a lot of people would be happy right now.

Instead, that 850 pen will live in infamy.

Thanks pete!

Looking forward to see what this 23 promo really means to all of us "fans".

Due to guest demand......of course

Pete I so agree! LOYALTY!! is the missing link for them! Having gone 10 times in 4 years, and only seeing the prices go up up up, it just doesn't cut it. Repeat business IS a big part of their business. You have it right on as far as I can see!

The D23 seems to be for the Disney HISTORIAN!!!!!!!! :scared1: If they know anything amount the "majority" Disney fan, they would know we want deals and perks for our repeat trips!!! I don't have time to read much on Walt's life and such, I am too busy planning my trip LOL. WTH are they doing?????? It seems like they are repeating their "Disney Insider" newsletter and website, throw in a couple events that most of us will never be at because we aren't up for paying 74.99 or able to make certain dates... ! :sad2: :sad2: Stupid!! I am disappointed too!

Am I 23??? NO!!!!!! And it pisses me off!!!!! (in more ways than one LOL LOL)

Great Post Pete!!
I joined today as well. How could I not?? I have been watching that count down clock and it was like Ticketmaster got to get in. I am trying to understand it, but I just don't get it?? I will attend the Expo in Ca and podcast about it. Even the expo is not just for members?? If it does not sell out anyone can go. What is so special about this club???

Pete, thanks so much for your point of view on this!!!!

I think the thing that dissappoints me the most, is that I really WANTED to sign up for a Disney fan club. I wanted a great club to be part of.

But since the only thing out of the whole package I really want is the magazine, I really see no reason to let them borrow my money for future magazines, when I can just spend the 16/17 dollars every three months and go buy it at the B&N down the street.

I was definitely a potential D23 member. I have the Disney bug, I would be their prime candidate. But until they show me my money is worth something to them, it's just not worth it to me.

Please enjoy the rest of your cruise for all of the rest of us who are at home!!!!

I'm still not certain if I will buy or not. In the end, I probably will. Someone on another thread made the comment that with the cost of the magazine at B&N, it was only $10 more to get teh surprise gift and the access to the other stuff.

Frankly, I was a big fan/attendee of the old Disneyana Conventions and it sounds to me like they are trying to make a Disneyana Convention Membership Club. The merchandise promo makes it sound like some of the same type of collectibles stuff. I don't know if the concept will work in this current economy and if they do the collectibles launches wrong, they'll get the same complaints as when the Disneyana conventions ran. (Not that people are buying/investing in a lot of collectibles they way things are...)

Wrong type of business launch at the wrong time....

Pete, you give Disney far more credit than I do. I agree there are some well-intending folks there. But unfortunately things like this are not designed by them. This is a money-grab, pure and simple. If it morphs, it will simply be because it didn't succeed in grabbing enough money. Not because they finally listened to the same fans they have been ignoring for years.

If they really wanted to get this right, and if they really were trying to create something for the fans, they would have done a better job out of the gate. Not perfect, but far better.

You have said it yourself many times. Disney's standard operating procedure is to see how much they can get away with, how much customers will tolerate, how little they are willing to accept.

There is nothing in this program to indicate it in anyway represents a change in philosophy.

That's not to denigrate anyone who participates. If it makes sense for you, go for it. We all have our guilty pleasures. Let's just not kid ourselves about the true intent of the program.

To be honest, I would join also, if I was in the US. Unfortunately $65 extra just because I'm an overseas fan, makes it a little excessive. This puts each magazine at over $30 each for me. And again because, I am an overseas fan, there is no other way to buy the magazine. I'm very disappointed. I feel that I'm a loyal fan, even from over here and would have enjoyed equal access.

Pete, I agree with most all of what you said. I was really hopeful that this would be a true loyalty program. :sad2: When it is all said and done, it is Disney again holding their hand out for more of our money. I will still plan our trips and buy the merchandise from the parks. My house is decorated Disney and of course I am grooming my girls to be married there (and yes, I know the cost!) but I am NOT 23.

Well said, Pete (as usual).

I was thinking about the Castaway Club for returning DCL cruisers. I have a membership card and always receive a nice stateroom gift, and a small reception onboard. It's not a huge deal, but it really does make me feel appreciated and part of a community.

Something along these lines would have made D23 truly worthwhile. Sure, D23 offers a membership card and a gift, but it doesn't convey community like the Castaway Club.

I am just sad, I really wanted to be a Disney Fanclub member but as PrincessBelle39 says if you're overseas it's a whole lot more expensive for just a magazine at this stage!

Why not have an online version of the magazine and a reduced price for membership? It would keep their costs lower and everyone around the world could join.

I am getting so sick of living in the wrong place! Our Disney Stores in comparison to the US ones are pitiful. If we order from Disneyshopping.com we have to pay $40 shipping and then we get hammered by the duty and taxes the governement impose (not a fault of Disney but it still sucks). Our Disney Channel doesn't show half the stuff the US one does. We don't have ABC (all the shows go to the highest bidders and for a while the channel showing Lost was unavailable on our TV cable provider).

Even the cost of DLRP is appaling compared to WDW!

In this day and age things should be done on a global scale, obviously some laws have to be taken into consideration (for example DVC can't advertise in the UK and we can't get anything for recommending people!)

I think they should have read the Dis for 3 years - then it would be the perfect club :thumbsup2

Looks like my $75 will go to GKTW rather than the money grabbing corporation that does things 'for the fans'

Well said Pete. I was not angry about his, just disapointed and confused on how Disney could get this wrong. I am not looking for much, I was happy to get my car magnet from the Mickey Moms reject club yesterday, but this does not offer anything that I can see being of value right now. I was planning on seeing if this improved and joining if it evolved into something more apealing to my situation. I just feel that someone is very out of touch with the fans. I now think this horse is dead for me!:rotfl:

Pete, thank you for takening time away from your cruise to post a thoughtful and well balanced statement. I am relatively new to the DIS and enjoy your and the teams thoughts on things. I traveled to Disney often before I found this site but since I have found it I realized how many things I truely didn;t know about the parks and disney in general. You always are honest and a breath of fresh air. Enjoy your cruise and keep up the good work

I agree with Pete, I am disappointed, and I only hope that Disney is following the reaction to this announcement and changes the club accordingly. I am an AP holder, and visit 3 or 4 times a year and is upsetting that there is no rewards or anything like that, but I imagine that Disney knows that we will all keep coming no matter what, it is part of the reason they can do things like this. That said I already bought two copies of the magazine and will be signing up later today for the club. What can I say they got a hold of me when I was young and I can't shake the habit, there just as addictive as cigarettes.

I could agree with Pete more. Beautifully stated.

I like merchandise as much as the next guy. But this should not be the program. That is crap you buy because you are excited about the program and want to wear its logo.

A Loyalty program is exactly what is needed. I'd pay an annual membership to a Disney Club that gave me real discounts on tickets or in the parks. Especially with greater discounts the longer you are a member.

Cause in the end, discounts are not free stuff. They are advertising. Just like coupons. They get to in the door. And they keep you in the door longer to spend more.

I'd gladly spend more and more money on Disney if I felt I was getting a deal, even in this horrible economy. But I won't spend a dime to join an exclusive merchandise club where the merchandise is pricy and nothing above and beyond the regular merchandise.

I agree with most that it was a little underwhelming but I am one of those who joined anyway. I am a HUGE Disney nut and while I don't agree with a lot of things they do as a company and most of their bogus "promotions", I do love all things Disney. So to me this was just another collectible I can have. I look forward to the magazine as we don't have Barnes and Noble up here in my neck of the woods. I keep hearing everyone talk about the $850 pen..and don't get me wrong, I was saying the same thing but ultimately nobody is making you purchase these extravagant items. There is a market for these kind of things though and you can't fault Disney for trying to exploit it. So I will hand over my membership fee and enjoy the perks (as good or bad as they are). If I don't like it, I don't renew...simple as that. I know it's not what we were all hoping and it doesn't really appease the hardcore fanatics such as most of us that frequent these boards. It does however provide, for those who are so inclined, another avenue to enjoy or express their love for Disney. I actually like some of the clothing they are offering and may purchase at some point. It's just my kind of style so please don't punish me or poke fun when you see me walking through the park with my D23 t-shirt or hat.;)

Well said Pete. Although I will definitely not be joining. I am a huge WDW fan and Dh and I spend several weeks a year there, but RU23 is a huge disappoint to me. I was expecting some type of rewards program, or even a rewards program I pay for that actually gives discounts, etc.
Heavens, as a Hilton Honors member I get more rewards for the little I use them then I do from DVC.
Just disppointed that's all, I'm still a fan.

Enjoy your cruise.
