After posting the results of my Doctor's visit this morning, I have received a couple of requests to write my "story", so that it could be shared with reluctant family members. I was going to just send it to the few people who asked, but one of them asked me to post it to the board in case it would help anyone else.

So here it is.

I began my diet on Feb. 1, 2003.

When I started, I weighed 245 pounds.

I chose Atkins as my plan, based upon the fact that it was recommended by my Best Friend, at first I ridiculed it as an "unhealthy" diet, because I was POSITIVE it would kill me with cholesterol. I had already been diagnosed by my doctor as having both high blood pressure (160/100), and extremely high cholesterol (262 total).

He put me on medication for both, the blood pressure barely dropped a few points, and the cholesterol came down to 226 and stayed firm there.

I bought the Atkins book, and after reading it thoroughly, I was convinced that it was a legitimate option to me.

I threw away a lot of unhealthy foods from my house to avoid what I foresaw as temptation. This would actually prove uneccesary, as I was one of the lucky ones that suffered absolutely NO cravings or withdrawals.

My loss was quite rapid, and this helped me to remain commited and to never let my motivation diminish.

In the first week alone, I lost TEN pounds!

In the weeks that have followed, I have lost an average of 3.15 pounds per week. Some weeks were complete stalls, and some were extremely "productive".

I have now reached 195 pounds, with my "goal" being 180-185.

Where my waist size was 42, it is now a loose-fitting 36, with a pair of 34's fitting "snugly" last week in the dressing room. This is a pants size I have not seen since I was a teenager. Buying clothes has become "fun" to me.

I can honestly say that I have not "cheated" even once, which is amazing given my lifelong lack of anything remotely resembling willpower.

I recently returned to the doctor after 6 months of him being unaware of any changes in my life.

When he walked into the exam room, his first words upon seeing my new lokk, were, "what the HELL happened to you"? To say that he was impressed is an understatement. He assumed that it was the result of me following his "low fat" diet. When I told him what I was in fact doing, he at first began to disparage the Atkins Plan, but quickly corrected himself by admitting that results speak louder than words. He did a thorough exam, and pronounced me healthier than he had ever seen me. My blood pressure has dropped to the low end of normal, and he is evaluating whether I am going to stop taking meds to control that. He ordered a full battery of blood tests, the results of which amazed him even more. My Triglycerides (which are the leading indicator of future heart disease), dropped from 219 to 70 (below 150 desired). My total Cholesterol dropped from 226 to 166 (below 200 desired). My HDL (good cholesterol) went from 43 to 48 (above 45 desired). And my LDL (bad cholesterol) went from 133 to 94 (under 100 desired).

This way of life has undoubtedly added years to my life, as well as giving me a new outlook on my appearance. I have NEVER been able to think of myself as anything other than a homely, plain guy, with a great sense of humor developed as a defense mechanism. I am still a LONG way from being able to see myself as anything remotely approaching good-looking, but I feel better about my appearance, and that is a big thing to this plain guy.

I hope that just one person is helped by reading my story, even if it only helped those insomniacs among you to doze off. ;-) (the sense of humor defense) LOL

John,

Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. You are a true inspiration. You are so much more than "Good-Looking'! You have an incredible heart and soul and that my friend, makes you an amazing person inside and out.

I AM SO VERY PROUD OF YOU!!

Now, you will live long enough to be a 'Grandpa' :teeth:

(((hugs)))

Well done, John. Thanks for sharing with us.

The only thing is- now you're REALLY making us curious, my faceless, headless friend.

Are we talking make-a-freight-train-take-a-dirt-road, simply uninteresting, or people-say-I'm-good-looking-but-I-just-don't-see-it?

Hmmmm? Inquiring minds want to know!:teeth:

John, Thanks. As a newbie to Atkins, your story encourages me to stick with it. I hope I can have good results, too.

Stay healthy, you definitely are an inspiration as stated in other posts. Congratulations!:teeth:

I am so glad that you decided to join us on WISH John! You have been a true inspiration to all of us! Can you let us know what a typical day of food intake looks like for you? Also, are you taking any supplements? And what kind of fluid intake is your norm? Thanks again John!

I think these inspiring stories are so important. We've had nativetxn's husbands story, Glo's, Alex's, SnackyStacky, and now John's. [there may have been more - and I'm sure there will be more to come]. These stories should never get lost out in WISHLAND! Please mods --- consider giving them a place of there own so we can reference them often to newbies or just a place to go for instant inspiration.

:D

Jody,

I don't think there should be any "place of our own". WISH itself is the Place of Inspiration!

I am, and will always continue to be, simply one small part of what WISH is all about. EVERYONE here is an inspiration to me in one way or another. I have gotten support from so many different people that it truly amazes me.

I am glad that in some way I have helped anyone out there, and I will continue to try and be whatever it is that I can be to whoever needs something.

:)

My daily food intake is only measured in Carbs, and I usually keep it around 10 or so. NEVER over 20 so far!

I take Centrum every day as my only supplement.

I drink around 6 liters of water every day.

You are a gifted writer! :) What a beautiful post!!! I sure hope that the people you wrote it for will read it and change their mind about Atkins! Who knows, you may have just helped save a few lives! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Congratulations on your health accomplishments. I can tell you that your headless picture is VERY attractive!!! I hope that as time goes by you will become more accepting of your new look and let your ego develop. There is nothing wrong with feeling attractive! :) I am so happy that you are REALLY healthy, inside and out! Those size 34s must feel GREAT!!!!! You'll be wearing them with confidence in no time!

Great story...and an incredible transformation. I am so very proud of you John !!!!! BIG HUGS!!!!

Thanks so much for posting your story, John, especially the details about your cholesterol levels. I am also on Atkins and a little worried about what it might be doing to my levels (all those years of believing low-fat is healthy is hard to overcome).

Stories like yours give me the support I need to stick with it. Atkins has already improved my blood sugar levels and I can't wait for my next set of tests. Hoping my Doctor will take me off my cholesterol meds! I HATE those pills!

John,

I am also so very inspired by your story and appreciate your posting it. I realize all diets don't work for all people. I wish everyone can find something healthy that works for them.

I admire your commitment to becoming/staying healthy and the results you have achieved.

I wish you continued success in maintaning.

Now...to forward your story to those I love.

John,

I'm still new to the low carb thing, unfortunately I have the sugar addiction thing down pat... I really am trying to break it, I seem to fall off the wagon frequently though... I am measuring my carbs more accurately though & whereas a few weeks ago I am SURE I ate 300 a day, I'm probably down to 30 or 40 now.... I have lost some weight (just 3 pounds), which is incredible because I am pretty much immobile & the doctors swore I would be able to lose any!!! Over the course of the last 10 months I'd lost 17 pounds & now with lowering the carbs, I'm down 20 with 20 more to go....

Of course I'm leading somewhere, I'm just long winded! Would you mind listing like one days diet? Or, do you have that kind of info already posted somewhere? I'm just curious what other people are actually eating (or not eating as the case may be!)

Congratulations by the way, it seems like this is really working for you!!!

And your book debuts when ...........may I have a signed copy please - I want everyone to know who has been a great inspiration to me!! Thanks for sharing and it's something about that clippie number that is just well.............FABULOUS!!!!!

Lots of hard work but worth it and you are so committed - you will be to goal in no time! You better be smiling!!

{{{{{hugs}}}} for a job well done!

Dear John,

Thanks for sharing your story, what an awesome accomplishment! I used to be a "weigher" at WW and it always seemed like it was sometimes more difficult for men to "share". Since I'm mostly speaking to all the dieting women in my life, it is wonderful to hear a man's perspective. I think the health benefits of your weight loss are really great. The older I get the more my struggle with my weight becomes one of health rather than appearance. And although my appearance still matters to me a great deal, it's just more important to me right now to live to a ripe old age and my chances of doing that 50lbs overweight aren't great.

Congratulations and way to go!!!!

-Mary Rose, the diet diva

Thanks for telling your story, John!

I've been trying (not terribly successfully) to stay on the induction diet for a few days, and was about to give in and order PIZZA for dinner! Now I'm inspired to drink some more water and eat a piece of cheese!
