My State Food is Better Than Yours

I'm reading a book about New England seafood and I'm learning some fascinating things. Ever heard of coffee syrup (you put it in milk),
It is runny and not thick like chocolate syrup. My DH loves this stuff, my FIL ships it to us.

Ever heard of Stuffies, coffee syrup (you put it in milk), RI lunch which is a cheese-filled hamburger pun with onions and pickles, snail salad, and oddest of all to me, Chow Mein sandwiches? This is an interesting thread.

Stuffies are stuffed quahogs. It is a bread based stuffing & here the recipes vary, but basically with chopped quoahogs, finely minced onion & celery. Some recipes call for egg as a binder or clam juice. Pile into a cleaned shell &t bake & off. We sprinkle on hot sauce when feasting on them.
Quahogs are, usually, larger than what you envision when you think of clams

Oh, yes, coffee syrup in milk or coffee 'cabinets'! Autocrat or Eclipse. We send this off to my Dad & DH & DS17 also love it!

Snail salad is a great favorite & I believe Italian in origin, although many countries have an equivalent.

Chow mein sandwich, IMHO, is more of a Massachusetts thing, although you can certainly get them in RI. It is that old chow mein recipe on a bun! :rotfl: You need to tell your server if you want a lot of gravy or not--strained or unstrained. It has to be eaten with a fork, well unless you're a wicked dexterous & very tidy diner! :rotfl2:

Being a good scotsman i vote for mince and tatties!! and porridge for breakfast of course!,
though i do have a tasting for pancakes with maple syrup, i think that comes from visiting relations in Toronto for so many years!!

Oh, I forgot one more regional delicacy. Fluff!!!! Made just a wee bit up the road in Lynn, MA.

Peanutbutter and Fluff! Deep fry that and put it on a stick!

Sing with me. "It take Fluff, Fluff, Fluff, to make a Fluffernutter. Marshmallow fluff and lots of peanut butter." YUM. You win!!

Oh, man do I loves me some peanut butter and fluff! And you can't find Fluff very easily in grocery stores down here. They have it with the ICE CREAM condiments! (Next to the Jimmies....yeah, that's right JIMMIES!!!)

We must be. I am a town north of the Westbrook (not Killingworth, the other one to the east of KW) one which is where we get take out, technically it is about 8 minutes but who is counting. Sometimes I like to get take out on my way home from grocery shopping at S&S.

Hmmmm...are you the house with the Mickey on the mailbox on Rt. 80??? Doubt it but that would be cool if you were.

Deep River? That is where I am, off 145 near the Killingworth line. Wow, sounds like we really are neighbors. Or maybe Essex or Ivoryton?

Nope, I'm not on 80 and I don't have a Mickey mailbox. Just a plain black one.

See, now I like Shaws better. :rotfl:

ARRRGH! I grew up in Pennsylvania, then have lived in the south since 1990. You PA/NJ people are making me DROOL! Taylor pork roll (thank god I live in a city, therefore it's available here!), pizza, cheesesteaks, hoagies, lebanon bologna, TastyKakes, various meatsticks, hot soft pretzels with mustard, Cooper CV Sharp cheese, hot dogs from Potts' or Yocco's, anything Pennsylvania Dutch... :faint: If you can't tell, I'm from the Allentown area. :goodvibes

Everyone needs to check out http://www.roadfood.com and look up your own state- talk about drool-worthy!

ETA: oh yeah, the south. I lived in NC for 15 years and then moved to TN last year. Everything down here is BBQ or fried :confused3

In northern NJ-bagels, ANYTHING Italian, pizza, Italian subs (called hoagies in Philly :teeth: )

In the Philly area-cheesesteaks (although they are really very good in NJ too) Tastykakes, soft pretzels from those vendors on the streets. Pizza is just as good as in Jersey too.

I remember ordering an Italian hoagie in Mrytle Beach once-it was the worst sandwich I ever had and it was NOT anythig close to an Italian sub. When I asked them for fresh mozz chesse and roasted peppers on the sub, they looked at me like I was crazy. Also, I told DH that Italian food in Disney would be anything like Italian food in north Jersey/NY and he didn't believe me, until we ate at Tony's....now he believes me.

Oh, my kids eat peanut butter and Fluff sandwiches too. :goodvibes

well, I have the luxury of living 5 minutes outside of manhattan in NJ. first of all definately the best italian and chinese food in the country. And in NY you can get anything, thai, french thai fusion, african thai fusion, indian, fondue.....whatever you can possibly imagine (even if you dont want to)

Well, I am from Louisiana, and when I think of food I miss I think of Cafe Au Lait at the Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter, N.O., Breakfast at Brennan's (my honeymoon in 1990) also in N.O. For dinner I love The Blue Dog Cafe in Lafayette, especially their corn and crab bisque! Also, crab au gratin at the Riverside Inn in Lafayette.

Also, as one poster has said before, anything my "MawMaw" made was heavenly. She passed away almost a year ago, so I am sure all the angels in heaven are a little fatter.

Don't forget that Community Coffee, cher! I could go on, but my stomach is growling and I am no where near Louisiana right now. I am in Monterey, CA,.....so...I think I will have to open a bottle of wine to forget how much I miss that cajun cooking.

All you folks in Louisiana, you are not forgotten. We still pray for the repair of our wonderful state (not only New Orleans) and for the repair of y'all's lives.

LAISSEZ LES BON TEMPS ROULER!!!!

GEAUX SAINTS!!! GO RAGIN CAJUNS!!! GO TIGERS!!!

I'm from NJ near the Philadelphia area and we are experts on our pizza and cheesesteaks.

And don't forget the soft pretzels!!!

Being so close to the finger lakes region, I have to say our wine; especially the late harvest Riesling and Ice wines. They will pair perfertly to all your state food.

Didn't read all the way through but, what could top Maine lobster!!!????

 Nothing tops it... for giving me a nasty case of anaphylaxis. :( Although that sure isn't Maine's fault!

Well how about NY cheesecake, and NY pizza. Ok, I will say that. Chicago, does have some good pizza though. But, I am from NY, and uhh our pizza is not childs play!!
