My sore throat...

Nearly two weeks ago, I lost my voice.

And I still don't have it back properly! It's still really sore and dry and husky! I feel like I'll never get my normal voice back, and it's starting to worry me!

I went to the doctor today and he said, "Get lots of rest and have lots of orange juice." Well duh. I've been doing that for 2 weeks and it's driving me mad. I'll turn into an orange soon.

He also gave me some antibiotics and said, "They might not help though. Take them and see. And don't teach for another week."

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!! :sad2:

I'm a relief teacher. I've taught two days in the past week. I know I shouldn't, but I feel fine except for my voice, and I get so bored at home. But my voice isn't getting better, so I suppose I really do have to stay home and do nothing. Which I know, might sound fun, but I'm so bad at doing nothing. And also, because I'm a relief teacher, if I don't work, I don't get paid.

So... does anybody have any tried and true remedies for sore throats!? You know, like the honey and lemon drink? Surely there's some magical cure out there that someone knows from their great-granny, or something!? :confused3

Thanks everybody!

have you been around any mold lately? that does me in-no pain just loss of voice.

if you get any pain-PLEASE-after your antibiotics are done (cuz it won't work while you are on them)-INSIST on a strep test. i have had 2 friends pass-away (one in her 20's one in her 40's) due to that weird strep virus that took jim henson many years ago.

don't want to worry you-just want you to know that you have to stay on top of these things!!! (my doctor gets infuriated when i go to urgent care with a sore throat and they don't do a 30 minute strep test before prescibing antibiotics).

p.s (if you are not adverse to alcohol) try tea with a shot of jack daniels or brandy, a bit of lemon and some honey (it burns, it cleans, it sooths :teeth: ).

Augh!!!

Hopefully I won't die from my sore throat!!

Crikeys.

I did have a flu-type thing that started my sore throat, two weeks ago. Now that's gone, but my cough and sore throat are still there. It's going around Canberra apparently (where I live), and since I'm a teacher, I pick everything up! I'm pretty sure if it was strep going around, someone would have heard about it by now...

Thankyou for your suggestions though! Brandy, hey? Hmmm.... ;)

I had the same thing, something is going around. I know several people that have had it and it does take about 2 weeks or so to get over it completly.

Dh has that too. We've narrowed it down to mold or his new asthma med, Advair. Doctor dismissed that till dh showed her the drug information. One of the side affects is sore throat and loosing voice. Now she wants him to go to a pulmonary specialist to rule out Aebesthos (sp?) contamination. :confused3 HMMMM let's see he's never had that problem, mold season starts the same time he starts a new medicine and he has a hoarse throat?? Why not take him off the med-restart the old one and see if it goes away. If it doesn't then let's wait till the end of mold season and see if it goes away(or test for it). Instead she sends him to a specialist who won't be cheap. :furious: Well off my rant box. I hope you feel better soon, but I agree sounds like an allergy

I had the same thing, something is going around.

Wow! That would be kinda cool if the same thing was going from Minnesota to Canberra, Australia.

Okay, thinking about it more, maybe it wouldn't be so cool. I suppose it would mean there was a world-wide outbreak of the sore throat virus. Teehee.

mold season starts the same time he starts a new medicine and he has a hoarse throat??

Can I ask what you mean by mold?
The first person who answered my question spoke about mold too. The only mold I know of, is mould that grows on your food if you've left it for too long. You know, the green furry stuff. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean mold as in, something else? :confused3

A lot of houses have black mold. You can often see it in a bathroom that isn't cleaned very well, etc. Sometimes if you have a basement that is damp, it will grow in the walls, etc. A lot of people are allergic to molds and need to be careful with black mold.
