My son just broke his leg two weeks before our trip!

If it's possible with his cast, I would go for renting or buying a knee scooter, they are so much fun to use! I broke my ankle and used one a couple of years ago, and as they are really uncommon in the uk a lot of people asked me about them at the fracture clinic when I went, esp those with kids. We had to reschedule our trip (one week before, I was gutted) as I wasn't allowed to fly with the cast, but I'm glad really as I would have wanted to swim and make the most of being there (we can only go once every 3 years, and fortunately had travel insurance which covered most of the costs). Good luck whatever you decide :-)

Depending on the age and maturity level of the child I would let them decide. As long as the doctor gives the go ahead anyway.

I would reschedule. It would be a challenge in the parks but a wheelchair would help. The bigger issue I see is how you son will feel stuck in a car for 8 hours each way with a cast on and he won't be able to use the pools. You don't have to worry about cancellation fees for a plane and so that's a plus. Postponing now would mean your son will have a better time enjoying the parks once he recuperates.

I would try for a waterproof cast if possible. I would not go with a knee scooter. They are fun if you just have to get around school or short distances but all day they can be painful. Depending on the size/age of your son a pediatric chair may be best. I would rent off site and bring a cushion for him.

After all of the planning and counting down and excitement, I don't think I could cancel 2 weeks out. If the doctor gives the all clear, and your son still wants to go, go for it. Get an electric scooter so you don't have to push him and have as much fun as you can. Hey, upside, you get on the buses first now. :) Whatever you decide, I hope it all works out.
you have to be 18+ to get an electric scooter I have a feeling the op son is younger then 18

but you are the last ones off of the busses

and no one has said this but if you do rent a wheel chair bring a pair of bike gloves and pushing a wheel chair can give you blisters

I'm sorry OP, that really stinks. I would first ask the dr. If he says it's okay, I would have to really think about it. Is it possible to postpone? Does your son want to go or wait?

If he's in a below-the-knee cast that still allows movement at the knee, I'd rent a wheelchair and go on with the trip (as long as the doctors approve).

If he's in a full-leg cast with no movement of the knee or ankle, I'd postpone. It will really limit the things he can do and probably make your trip extremely stressful on him and on you.

I'm very sorry to hear about your son's leg :sad1:

I hope that whatever you decide that you all have a fabulous and fantastic Disney vacation!! :simba:

First thing to do is ask the Dr that is treating your child
That is the only person qualified to give advice or another medical professional with a cess to his medical records in a pinch

I agree with those who have said to check with your son's doctors to get their opinions on how much your son will be able to do & tolerate. If you do decide to go ahead with the trip as planned, depending on your son's age, you could rent a scooter. I saw a few teenagers with broken legs using them during our last trip. The scooters that you rent from companies outside of WDW are small and easy to maneuver through the parks.

As someone who had a spiral fracture to the tibia - I think they called mine a pilon (sounds like pylon) fracture - it went right into the ankle joint... I would 100% reschedule. I was in surgery twice in the first two weeks and in soooo much pain. If anyone TOUCHED my cast - it was dreadful... and jumpy if anyone even got within 3 feet of it. This coming from a person who had two unmedicated births. WORST pain in my life - ranging from a 8 to a 15 out of 10 for the first few weeks.

ZERO weight-bearing for 13 weeks, months of recovery after.

However, I did it as an adult and apparently it is easier for kids who have more malleable bones.

I hope your son is in much less pain.

My son was injured yesterday in a soccer game, spiral fracture of the tibia. Our trip is two weeks from today. We're obviously only concerned with his physical well-being, but we know we also need to be thinking about the practical issues that come with this trip--big financial investment and all. If we need to cancel and reschedule we would have no problems going that route, just not sure when the next opportunity in our calendar will present itself.

Our plan was to drive the 8 hours, stay at Pop and do 5 days in the parks. He'll be in a cast so we'll have to rent a wheelchair? Can we make a special request for ground floor rooms? I'm sure his pain will likely not be an issue at that point, but I have no idea if he would even be able to ride anything/fit in a ride vehicle. Standing in line will probably be out of the question.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing or know how Disney accommodates these kinds of needs? I welcome all suggestions.
Sending pixie dust pixiedust: your way... So sorry...
No advice, just good wishes!

My son broke his leg around two weeks before our vacation - not Disney. We were just at a resort for a week but we got the go ahead to go. The way my son was ( around 8 years old and in a full leg cast) I wouldn't have gone to Disney. It was a rough week and we were just in a resort. Hope everything works out for you.

I really think I would reschedule, as disappointed as I know I would be. Hopefully, this is something you could work out. So sorry this happened. I hope he makes a full recovery quickly.

I would go if the doctor is ok. I do recommend renting a wheelchair from a third party and tons of info on doing that in the disabilities forum. Dont' get one at the parks, you can only use it at the parks and that's a fraction of the walking you need to do.

dont' forget rescheduling should be covered by your travel insurance because this is for medical reasons for any extra costs that incur if you decide to push it a couple months or more.

Back in 2005 my wife broke her left leg a week before her scheduled "girls only" trip with two of her friends. The ortho said "go". She rented a cart and had a ball.

Unless that has changed.....our friend's daughter got a scooter when she was either 15 or 16 on one of our trips. This was a few years ago.

I feel for you and your son! The same thing happened to us last year. My son broke his ankle and tore ligaments in his foot 2 days before we were suppose to head to the Smoky Mountains last year. The majority of our trip was suppose to be hiking but we had to scale back on that. We rented a compact wheelchair from a local company and took it with us. We did have to make some adjustments but we wound up having a great time. Looking back I do not regret going. I think that you guys can still go and have a great trip just be willing to adjust where needed!
