Last week DS2 had a yellow goopy eye and took him to the doc and found he had 'conjuctivitis'. Doc said don't be surprised if it turned into an ear infection. Monday he had a mild cough and they said give him Triaminic. Well it got worse and we took him today and the doc said PNEUMONIA!!! We leave in just over 2 weeks!! I hope this clears up quick.

He's 2.5 and has not been sick ever. He had 1 day of fever 1 day after shots. Boy he knows how to do it right!!! And the medicine is the most bitter tasting stuff. He normally loves to take other meds (when he's had runny nose or teething) but he just spits this stuff out. UGH!!!!!!!!!!

Just venting to people who have been through this.

When my daughter was 6 she was diagnosed with pneumonia a week before we left. Yet another trip to WDW with antibiotics. Keep your son well hydrated and make sure he gets plenty of rest and you'll be just fine.

Have a great trip!

I'm sure he will be fine before you leave. DD7 was diagnosed with bronchi-pneumonia about a week before WDW. I was frantic. I didn't even know she was sick. I just took her to the doctors since I had to take DS4 and couldn't find a sitter for her. She also had an ear infection. Keep up with the meds, rest and tons of fluid. My doctor has seen DD ill a lot and said the change in weather will also be good for her. By the time we left for WDW she was much better (but still not close to being well). By about two days into the trip she was 100%. If your son is still not 100% by the time you go, just keep things easy for the first couple of days if possible. PLan long mid day breaks if touring, if not touring try DTD and Fort Wilderness/WL.

have a great time

DS4 had a pneumonia last summer. Within one week of being on the antibiotics he was almost 100%.

We are in sort-of the same prediciment. DS1 came down w/a cold last week turned into an ear infection, now taking antibiotics. Yesterday DS4 starts with the running nose, coughing...UGH...he's caught the cold.

I am taking BOTH to the ped next week (we leave on 1/29) to make sure that no one has an undiagnosed infection...somewhere!

I've become a slightly paranoid about germs now. I'd like to keep the kids away from everyone until we leave :guilty: but i know that's just not doable!

:guilty:
Hope he feels better very soon. I guess the bright side is better now than when in WDW.

If he is spitting out the meds he may not be getting the full dose. You can call your doc and see if they can change the med. See if they can at least give you something that is dosed once or twice a day so it will be easier for you to get it into him.

Our pharmacy (Winn Dixie) can add flavorings to disguise the icky taste.

Poor baby. Hope he's well soon.

Sometimes it depends on the medication, not all can have flavorings added.

Prayers that he is better soon. DS had pneumonia last year and was fine in about a week. Also ask your doctor about mixing the medication with food or drink. Always ask first as some can not. I found that peanut butter and jelly can hide a bitter tasting medication pretty well. Only give use a tiny amount of the food to be sure your child consumes it all. Also avoid a favorite drink in case the child rejects the taste he will not be turned off to the drink when he really needs extra fluids. Chocolate syrup is also a good medium for mixing. Again though, check with the dr, or drug store first!!

We didn"t have a trip planned but DS #2 got double pneumonia at age 14 months. It literally happened overnight! I was soooo scared! The Dr. said that if the antibiotics didn't result in improvement within 24 hours he would have to be hospitalized. I cried the whole way home from the dr.'s office. Well, that was 10 am and by 7pm he was running around with his big brother! He bounced back quickly, my nerves took a little longer :sad2:

So, I can sympathize with you. Just remember kids usually get over things more quickly than adults.

I can totally relate. My two older children have had pneumonia a couple of times a piece after being on the medecine for a day or two they were perfectly fine again. But, my youngest one is another story. Two years ago we had to cancel a trip due to her asthma. She got sick and we had to plan the trip for a few weeks down the road. We didn't want to be in the room with the nebulizer for hours at a time. I bet your little one will be fine. Good luck to you both.

Thanks for the well-wishes!! He's already feeling better. No fever in 24 hrs so that's good.

We did get it flavored according to manufactureres directs and the pharmacist said we could try adding a little more and that still did not work. She said we could not add it to food/drink because when it leaves it's suspension medium the molecules begin to burst.

We are bribing him w/ a lollipop which seems to be working. Give a taste of med and a suck on the lolli..repeat..repeat.

I think we'll be ok. That's the risk we take with tavelling this time of year. My friend was not going to get the 'no expiry' option and my thought is $35 per ticket is cheap insurance for things like this in winter travel!

My daughter had pneumonia last year, which was diagnosed while we were AT Disney! She was two at the time. She had IV antibiotics while at the Celebration Hospital, and then follow up antibiotics for five days. She bounced back pretty quickly. My husband and I had strep about 2 days after that! I did learn that Walgreen's can take prescriptions from out of state doctors, which is useful information. They also took our insurance which was great. The hospital bill satisfied our deductible and our out of pocket max all at once, it was January 1st. I also learned to avoid hospitals on January 1 at 6am--Yuck! People on gurnees everywhere, a man screaming at a nurse and being held back by a security guard-Yikes!!
Hopefully you will avoid all of that by getting him well before you leave!! Have a wonderful trip!!!!!

My 1 year-old grandson was just diagnosed with a double ear infection and pneumonia a couple of weeks ago. He got some bitter white medicine. I think it was Biaxin. The pharmacist told me to give him a popsicle right before giving the antibiotics. It numbs the tongue so it's not as sensitive to the taste.
