My son got in trouble for bringing a weapon to school

Why can't they use a little common sense with their zero tolerance policies? :confused3

The very definition of zero tolerance removes any possibility of common sense from being considered.

Clearly, they're concerned he's going to start throwing Unforgiveable Curses around the playground. :wizard:
:lmao:

Exactly what I was thinking!
Can't have students running around all willy-nilly and throwing curses about.
Just wait until those Percy Jackson fans start showing up for show and tell!

Did they think he was going to poke someone's eye with it?? Clearly, they should ban pencils, pens, and fingers also!

I'm still at a loss as to how this is a "weapon".

Doesn't the TSA allow it through their checkpoint? Seriously?

I've not seen any holdups, murders, crimes of any nature with a magic wand.

Dowel Rods I Am sure are used in art class, used to help weight down the bottom of maps....so surely the school is setting a bad example if the "shape" was a problem.

And I agree with another poster--this is not "zero tolerance". Not even close. This is pathetic.

OMG I am in trouble. I had a student today who brought in the very same wand for Show n Tell and I did not comfiscate it :scared1: Does that make me an accomplice? :confused3

The more posts I read like this, the more home schooling seems attractive! Not because of teachers, I think most do a very good job. But because of very stupid school and district rules like this. I do not have the type of personality that can deal with stupidity on this level.

Do you get it back?

Yes, they gave it to him to take home. The sucky part is, he lost his show and tell priviledges (according to him - that wasn't in the email) for a month. He just got it yesterday and was really proud of it, poor kid.

:surfweb: I'd start sprucing up my resume, if I were you. You're obviously quite negligent. Can't have teachers allowing magic wands. Children might actually develop their imaginations.;)

Sorry--I'd be on the phone.

I'm not going to suggest news media and lawsuits--but the punishment doesn't fit the lack of a crime.

But I seriously would consider it.:rotfl:

A great example of how ridiculous zero tolerance can be.
Sounds more like zero brain cells to me!

Now THAT ticks me off even more. You said he is 7, right??? It's not like the kid took a handgun on the sly and smuggled it out of the house. He took a HP WAND with your permission. I'm sure if you had even an inkling of an idea that this would be considered a weapon, you wouldn't have let him take it in. Now he will lose show and tell over their lack of common sense???

Did some idiot not even really look at it and think it was a toy sword? I can see them not allowing those.

Well, then, if a wand constitutes a weapon, all writing utensils, compasses, anything with a point needs to be considered a weapon as well. As one who was (accidentally) punctured with a pencil...those things are dangerous! :lmao:

I'll ask about it when I respond to the counselor's email. Maybe he misunderstood.

I suppose they could have thought it was a sword, but I seriously doubt it. I mean, they took it away from him so they got a good look.

Wait -- he has a wand with a carrying case - is it embossed with the Ollivander's crest? What's it made out of (dragon, unicorn, walnut.....) I want the details please. Put your son on if you have to.

Um, and please tell me where can I buy one?
