My sitter turned on the ac and left the windows open- vent!

Today I got home from work and the ac was on. Cool no problem but then I noticed one of the BIG living room windows was still open. My sitter is not some 14 y/o kid but a 30 y/o woman. When I asked her how long the ac had been, she said since 12:30 pm. It was 5:00 pm at the time. Can't imagine what that's going to cost me. Our home, sans basement, is 2500 sq ft. She said, in a snotty tone, I'll pay the extra part of the bill then. I would have never thought about that until she said it with such a rude tone. My guess is that will add quite a bit. The ac is set at 78* and it was 95* outside.


Just needed to vent.

I doubt it will cost that much if the ac was set at 78. We actually forget to turn ours off and open the windows quite often and our house is about 2300 sq ft.

I hope you are right! 78* isn't that cold. We have 2 units though, one for upstairs, and one for the main level. Both ac's were on.

It must have just been a babysitter's kind of day...I came home yesterday and my front door and daughters windows were wide open with my air on too.

One time earlier this summer when she was babysitting it was kind of chilly in the house because we'd left the windows open overnight so she took it upon her self to close all the windows and turn on our gas fireplace. With the prices of propane right now that 10 minute warm up proabably cost me $100. UGH

Wasn't it an accident, and her tone was probably in reference to your tone. I get that you might be upset, but are your kids well cared for are they having fun this summer, are you happy otherwise with your sitter? Again, it was an accident.

I turned on my AC yesterday also and noticed when I went to bed that my bathroom window was open upstairs - it was an accident. I asked my kids to shut them and they missed one, things happen.

Sounds like you overreacted a bit... I would rather she be focusing her attention on the kids and forget to close a window than the other way around.

I understand your vent. You have to work, you're paying her and now it costs you extra. I have been there but in NYS it was not the AC but the heat. When DS was about two I had a sitter go into every room and turn the heat up--we had electric baseboard heating in the apt we had at the time. Every room was set to 95--I am a 68-72 kind of gal, so when I entered the house I was why is it so very hot in here--checkthe thermostat 95, move to next room same thing--she even set my room at that which told me she was in my room . She was a teenager so we just never had her sit for us again after I found all my makeup played with and a brand new lipstick broken off . It was tough because I worked with her Mom and she alwasy asked if DH and I wre going to want to go out so her daughter could sit. I just answered honestly--we can't afford to go out--that electric bill was over teh top at the time for us, and that was a tube of expensive lipstick--my first one before that it was all wet and wild and after the broken tube it was back to wet and wild . I know it can be a pain, but I'm sure many of us have been there so vent away!

Did you tell her what temperature to set them to? Did you tell her not to adjust your bedroom heater? Seeing as you asked her to go into EVERY room, you didn't ask her to exclude yours. Seems like you weren't very clear and that you expected her to read your mind.

I would have confronted her on that one. How do you know it was her? Did you open that lipstick just prior to her being there and then reopen it as soon as you left? Maybe it was your housekeeper or one of the other babysitters.

when she said she "had" a sitter do this, I think she meant "involuntarily." I don't think she instructed the sitter to do this. I had a sitter (a 40 something woman, not a child), who let my kids handle this very expensive and beautiful children's book I kept on a high shelf and only let them read with me, and they tore it up, and she said I shouldn't have left it where the kids could see it and ask for it!

I came home to a full snack cake on the kitchen floor. It had been stepped on and tracked all over the kitchen and carpet in the next room. The babysitter just left it laying.
How about a professional leaving a door wide open? When we sold our last house the inspection was while we were in WDW. They never told our REA when they were coming so she was not present. The inspector turned the heat up to about 75(which we never even had it that high) and then left the front door open.....in January....in Kansas, and never turned the heat back down after he was done. It was like that for 5 days pumping heat into the neighborhood through the screen door. I was glad to know no one came in the open door to trash the house or anything, and that it was empty in case they had since we had already moved into our next house.

Sometimes a good vent is all we need! I think I would have throttled that teen sitter!

My friend is dealing with babysitter issues right now. She came home last week to find her kids with severe sunburns. The babysitter had taken them to the beach and even though she says she applied sunblock, there's no way that she could have with the severity of the burns these kids got.

The babysitter was let go, although the sunburn issue isn't the main reason. But now things are awkward because we work with the babysitter's mother. She is none too happy with my friend, but apparently her daughter isn't telling her everything.

I am way past the age of needing sitters, but I will tell you that it will only get worse! I have two boys (15 and 13...and 36 if you count my DH!) and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't find some window or door in my house open. I feel like that could be a full-time job for me -- just going around making sure the windows and doors are shut.

OP, it'll only get worse...but you can't fire your kids!

DMIL lives with us and 2 days(IN THE SAME WEEK)I came home from work to find all the windows open and just happened to notice that there was cold air coming out of one of the vents.....went over to thermostat and lo and behold she had left the air on ALL DAY with the windows open. I tried to nicely say "Uh did you know you the air is on with the windows open" and she said "Well i wanted to get some fresh air in the house since it's not quite as hot today" and then "Well the air hasnt been running at all today"....YEAH RIGHT IT IS RUNNING RIGHT NOW SO I KNOW IT HAS BEEN RUNNING ALL DAY, AHHHHHH!! Then if that wasn't bad enough, came home like 2 days after that and she had done it again with the same excuse as before, my DH almost went through the roof when I told him.....I know when I get that bill in a few weeks it will be high....I feel like putting locks on all the windows so she can't open them....I feel your pain.

Never in a million years would I think of adjusting someone else's thermostat! I don't even touch my parent's when I'm there for the weekend (which is every weekend). Who are these people, and what makes them think that it's ok?!- Especially when THEY aren't paying the bill! Seriously?!

I am so glad that I don't need a sitter very often. These stories are horrible and the inspector that left the heat on and door open? I would have sent him a bill. You guys are too nice though, I would have went off on these crazy people! (in a nice way of course! )
