I went to go see My Sister's Keeper today. Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I think that's because I lived through practically everything Kate endured.

A lot of people were gasping during the vomiting scenes, and I didn't get why. I think people have this romanticized idea about chemo - that it doesn't make you so violently ill. But, it does. I can fully say that the cancer aspect was portrayed accurately. (Though, I'm a bit jealous she had eyelashes. I lost my eyelashes, but kept my eyebrows. Weird) You really do become that pale, you really do lose ALL of your hair (from your head to your arms to your legs), and you really do rarely get out of bed. I think I had the exact same dialogue, when Sara tries to get Kate out of bed and Kate cries "I'm tired, I'm sick, and I'm UGLY!". (My dad tried to get me out as much as possible, but didn't realize I just had NO ENERGY to even roll over in bed) SPOILER: Even though I didn't read the book, I wasn't shocked that Kate was okay with dying. It's sad, but when you go through that much torture you just want to be pain free. I didn't even go through something so much, and I was ready to die if need be.

I thought the movie was really good, despite the poor reviews. Thoughts?

Oh, and the similarities were weird! After my 1st chemo session, I was half-asleep but admant that I go in the pool. Kate wanted to go to the beach. I had a nurse that was snippy like in the apple juice scene too. It was like OMG, just going back to those 10 months of hell!

I don't know if I want to see the movie because i know the ending was changed You should read the book because the end is a shocker.

Why did they change the ending? They completely switched around who died!

that was my exact thought! that's why I don't want to see the movie because i know what's really supposed to happen!

I def want to read the book.

In the beginning of the movie, I wanted to slap both Sara and Anna. Anna was going on about "I won't be able to play sports, blah blah blah, I'll never be normal" and I was just like "You know what? No kid on chemo will be ever normal again. We make a new normal". It just pissed me off. And Sara, for talking about the lawsuit in front of KAte. You do NOT do that because no child needs that kind of negativity thru such a trying time.

I'm taking this too seriously but it hits sooo close to home for me.

I read the book after I found out they were making the movie. I always try to read the book before seeing the movie.

It was a good representation... up until the climax.. The last 30 minutes I sat in my seat thinking no, no, no this is not what happens. Not to say the movie wasn't good. I still cried at the end when she says "every year on her birthday we go to montana."

If you're going to read the book I won't spoil it for you here but the ending to the book made a much bigger impact on me. I strongly suggest reading the book.

The book ending was much more shocking, I think. For some reason the movie ending seems too predictable? It's still an amazing story though, I believe.

I don't think their reactions had to do with a "romanticized idea," but rather they're not used to the vomiting idea, or maybe they're like me and are emitophobic.

I still haven't seen the movie, but I want to.
Thank you for the warning so I know when to shut my eyes.

Predictable? Yeah. I just saw the ending as a way to provide closure. I don't really know how to explain how I think it's closure, it's just how it came off to me.

i havent read or seen the movie, but i think the younger sister dies in the book right? does the cancer girl die in the movie?

Yes.
It's odd though because the doctors basically tried to put her on hospice. You know when someone's on hospice, as the inch closer to death, they're comatose. She wasn't. That struck me as weird, fine one day and dead the next.

They aren't always comatose Sonya. My great uncle was in hospice, and he was still semi-aware.

Ooooh, how I wanted to smack Sara whenever she came onscreen!

Okay, semi-comatose. How in the hell did she have so much energy though?

This is why they should have stuck with the ending of the book. You didn't question it. You just had to accept it.
