Last Sunday, my friend and I, both took the Around the World on a Segway Tour at Epcot (and I still have a huge bruise on my leg to prove it :rotfl: ).

We met our guide, Letithia (from France) at the Guest Relations inside the park. She walked us over to segway central in the Innoventions building and we each picked out a helmet and were shown a short movie.

We spent the next hour learning to mount and dismount the Segway, riding towards the wall and hopefully stopping before we hit it, navigating orange cones, and learning to go up and down inclines.

It is important to note that if you lean forward, the segway acclerates and goes forward. if you lean or pull back it slows down and goes backward until you stand up straight. To turn, there is a control on the left handle that turned up, turns right, or if turned left, you guessed it turns left.

Why is this important? I will tell you. You see, we only had one small accident in our training classroom so far, and that was my friend who unfortunately was not able to come to a complete stop before meeting the wall. It made her much more cautious and she slowed down considerably. I, however, was very excited that I had taken to it so quickly as i really don't have a lot of coordination (I am 30 and still can't drive a manual transmission).

As we exited the classroom for our World Showcase tour, we were the last two to leave followed by the second CM, Peg (who would later save me from myself in China). I was commenting to my friend that no one saw her crash and she would be fine, especially if i could do this. Just then, as i was going up the ramp to the door, I felt myself getting too close to the wall, panicked, leaned forward to jump off the back. Then of course, THE SEGWAY ATTACKED ME! :scared1: And trust me, you do not want to be attacked by a segway.

It was slightly painful but i was ok. Peg rushed to my side and asked calmly "Now what happened?" Did she not see it? IT ATTACKED Me. I anwsered in my victim tone "I don't know. I turned into the wall and accelerated?" She told me not to accelerate into walls and we were off.

If was fun to ride through each of the countries. we rode through stores and restaurants, around the pillars in Italy, through the gardens and over their bridges in China and Japan, through the streets and shops of morrocco, over the uneven paver stones in the train garden in germany, and through the small hedge maze in the garden behind America. (I now know why this tour is so expensive. it is to pay to replace the bushes some of took out with our Segways. :teeth: Shhhhh. )

In different countries, our CM guide gave us little known info about the different pavillions. We had to stay single file going in and out of the world Showcase where there were park guests, but between Mexico and Canada we played follow the leader in a free form. we were also allowed free time back in Italy and the Cm's were happy to take pics and video of us.

Back at Segway central, we parked our segways and I recieved a nice pin to go with my nice new bruise as proof of my tour. They really were not hard to learn, but they aren't as easy as riding an escalator either.

I do have a new profound respect when i see the CM speeding on those things on uneven pavement or up or down inclines. It was a lot of fun to do, well except for turning into a wall and acclerating. Maybe I will just stick to escalators from now on. Here I am!

I also did the Epcot Seas Aqua tour which I REALLY loved. I posted a separate report for that, that you can find on the board. Thanks for reading. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.

I did this tour as well with my DS and DN who were both 16 and DH. DS and DN were natually gifted Segway Drivers. DH was average. I needed extensive Segway Drivers Ed. Not as easy as it looks. I think by the end I was enjoying it more because I got the hang of it. It really relies on your weight and how you balance it. I would like to try it again some time.
Sorry for your battle scars. :)

Thank you both so much for posting about your Segway Adventures! I wansn't aware that they even offered these when we went in December, and my dad was just dying to give it a try. I'll definately have to make the arrangements for him when we go in May, 2007 (waaayyy too far in the future!)

Thanks again!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to have a Segway "experience". It was another girl and myself who ended up with runaway Segways in our class. Rather scary as your instinct is to lean forward, but this just makes the silly thing go faster! I also ended up climbing over a curb while going through a little garden area. Those things are quite heavy and I'm lucky I didn't end up with a nasty bruise. My DH wants to do the Segway tour again this year, but I'm suggesting he wait until we go down with my sister & BIL in 2007. Maybe by then some of the memories will have faded and I'll have the courage to go again.

I love to hear about other peoples' "less than coordinated" experiences. The segway tour looks like so much fun, but I'm a total klutz (once fell flat on my face when a sidewalk in Epcot attacked me). I'm so afraid I'd be such a klutz and not be able to manage the segway. But I sooo want to try it. At least I won't be first if I fall or run into a wall (and I can drive a manual transmission).

Thanks for the detailed tour report! I am thinking of doing this tour on my next trip, since it sounds really fun and perfect for a solo traveler. And I drive a stick shift everyday, so hopefully I can get the hang of it! :teeth:

I will be doing this tour in March...and I cannot drive a manual transmission and I have to be very, very cautious on escalators. In fact, I specifically booked the tour for our next-to-last full day (Thursday) so I could spend Friday at the ER and be well enough to fly back home on Saturday.

:rolleyes2

Should make for an entertaining trip report if I live thru it.

WE GO THRU STORES????? Yikes. Put up the glassware please...

I don't know how far out you can book the tour but I think it's much more than 90 days out. It's a popular tour so don't wait too long to book. When we did this last May, they were running 2 tours a day: tour 1 started at 8:30 am and tour 2 started at 9:30 am. The tour lasts 2 hours total.

DH and I have done it twice and it is a blast!

Another segway question. My husband and I both would like to do the tour. My question is, is there a place for our children to sit ( or stand) and watch since they are too young to drive? they are 11 and 15.

thanks

They could probaly stand at the doorway and look in for the part that is in the classroom but once you are out in the World Showcase I do not think they would be allowed to follow. I do not think they would be able to keep up. At a 11 and 15 why not let them have some time on their own in Future World while you and your husband are on the tour?

Can I ask when you are doing the tour in March? DS, me and DS's friend are doing the tour (the 2 hour one) on Tuesday 3/28. DS has been DYING to do this tour since he first heard about it a few years ago. He just turned 16, so he is "legal" now :thumbsup2 ! DS is a pretty good driver, so I hope that we won't have any "incidents" :scared1: !

My DH hit the walk going up the ramp in the classroom. I laughed so hard at him. :rotfl2: I will tell him that others have hit the wall too! :thumbsup2

It is a great tour and we really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the info! I have my 16 year-old son scheduled to take this tour on March 13th at 9:30 am. I assume by the time they get outside World Showcase will be open? Do they still follow the same path on the later starting tour?

Also, does anyone know if there would be a place I could get his picture once he goes outside? I have to be there in the beginning to sign the waver so I was hoping to be able to grab a picture of him at some point.

Who do you schedule this with? Do you have the phone number? I'd like to surprise my husband with this gift. Thank you.

You can book most of the tours for this whole year now. I booked my Segway tour for October already. I am nervous, but so excited!

Call 1-407-WDW-TOUR and tell them you are interested in booking the 2hr Around the World on Segway Tour.

World Showcase opens at 11:00am. The group will emerge from the training room around 10:30am so for the first half hour they will have the World Showcase to themselves. You would have a couple of opportunities to take a photo. If you are waiting outside the training building around 10:30am you could catch them as they make their way from the building to the WS. You could also catch him on their way back to the training building close to 11:30am. Otherwise, if someone can remember the route they take through the WS, you could walk around the WS in the opposite direction as soon as WS opens at 11:00am and meet up with the group somewhere along the way and take photos as they ride past.

I did the 930 tour. We started in Mexico at 1030 and went countrer clockwise finishing in Canada at 1130. We really didn't hit the crowds entering World Showcase for the day until we hit France, our last stop. We did not stop in the UK or Canada, just rode straight through back to the Innoventions building. Hope that helps.
