I’ve put off starting to write my trip report from last week because I’m a tad intimidated by the AMAZING trip reports flying around here lately! :)

Cast of Characters:

Bonnie (me) 42
Ria (my mom) 65 (hadn't been to WDW since 1980 and had never taken a trip with just me!)
Jarrett (my DS) 14 (easy-going, excited to see his sister!)
Shayna (my DD) 20 (CM extrodinaire! Working at Disney for all the right reasons!)

PRE-TRIP REPORT (BACKGROUND)

Not to turn this into an unfolding drama, but to give you some background on why I was taking this trip, my super-wonderful, Disney-obsessed daughter Shayna (who’s 20) decided in January 2006 to apply for the ICP program at WDW. She was completing her first year of university and had broken things off with her steady boyfriend of 4 plus years and was commenting on how it would be a dream fulfilled if she landed a summer job working for Mickey!

Well, what would any Disney-obsessed mother do, but jump right on it and get her application into the hiring agency here in Canada!

She had to await word by telephone whether she would get an interview in Toronto in March. This was all before I found a wonderful website that supplies tons of information on the program and what to expect, so when the call came and I gave Shayna the message (she was away at school in Waterloo – 30 minutes from home) she called and spoke to the woman without realizing that it was a telephone interview! Probably better, because she wasn’t nervous – just answered her questions and was then told she would have the interview in Toronto. I believe what clinched the interview was her answer to the question “Why do you want to work at WDW?” Shayna’s answer was that she wanted to have the opportunity to spread the magic to guests the way it had been given to her over the years! Great answer!

Fast forward a few weeks where we traveled to Toronto on the Sunday before the Monday morning interview. You know when everything seems to fall into place and you just have a good feeling about things? Well, that’s how the time in Toronto was. We had never gone and done something like this together without the ‘guys’ and we had a fun dinner and bought chocolate and watched the Oscars. It was a fun time together and I remember thinking that even if she doesn’t get the job, it was a great memory!

Her interview in the morning was interesting…A large group presentation, and then they organized interviews with 2 people at a time! Thankfully I had read something about that, so Shayna was prepared for it and it didn’t throw her. She was really confident about how it went, and was told she would her within the next 3 weeks.

She went back to school, and the days dragged by. It didn’t help that on this ICP website, a couple of people were posting that they had gotten the call and were offered jobs. Shayna’s confidence started to crumble, and it was getting tense. She had sent out a bunch of resumes as a backup plan, and had gotten a call about working at a local golf course for the summer. I had to run and pick her up on a Wednesday for a 2 p.m. interview. She had the interview, but commented that her heart really wasn’t into it. Made the comment that if she didn’t get the job, she would probably resent Disney a bit…she knew she was a great candidate and was wanting to go for all the right reasons (It’s amazing how many kids go for all the wrong reasons!)

I just had a funny feeling about the day, and suggested that because she was already in town, that she come home and have some dinner before we took her back to Waterloo.

We got home after running a few errands, where the whole time I’m thinking “we need to get home”. We walk in the door and my son looks like the cat who ate the canary! He makes some casual comment about a message for Shayna and at first I didn’t believe him…thought if he was joking, I was going to kill him!

It was ‘the call’ and the most crazy bedlam broke out let me tell ya! I have never experienced such an instant, thrilling high before in my life! I actually gave myself a headache. The joy for her was more than I have ever experienced!

She made the call and was able to get all the details. She was told that her interview went so well, that she was offered a special Customer Service position that the hiring agency didn’t know much about because they don’t hire Canadians for it very often. Told her it was the job of a lifetime there and that they would have to make some calls to get the details and that it would all arrive with her papers and such. Can you just imagine how excited we were?

We jumped through all the hoops, and awaited the ‘package’. When it finally arrived, it was also her last day of university, so when we finished moving her stuff home, she sat down to check it out.

You’ll never guess what happened….when she looked at the paper with the details of her job, it was welcoming her to CUSTODIAL not CUSTOMER SERVICE! OMG!

You can only imagine what kind of drama unfolded! My husband said it was just a typo, but I knew right away what had happened. In the process of doing her paperwork, someone (whether the agency or WDW) accidentally keyed Custodial instead of Customer Service – alphabetically they would follow each other. It was late on a Friday and we couldn’t do anything until the Monday. A weekend of hell, let me tell you. You don’t tell someone that they’ve been chosen for an extra-special position and then tell them they’re going to scrub toilets! Not good! She always said she’d be happy picking up Cinderella’s garbage, but when you hear you’re getting an over-the-top job and then garbage duty, it sucks!

When we finally touched base with the agency, they looked into it and admitted that someone had made a keying error, but hoped that Shayna would enjoy her Custodial position. Huh?

Not a good way to get this Disney adventure started that’s for sure…

We actually pushed the envelope and asked if she could be switched to at least a job that was in her top 3 choices. They were able to switch her to Operations/Attractions which was her 1st choice, but we never quite understood why they couldn’t just switch her back to what they offered her. I know she’s still a little bitter about it…

Got her on a flight on SW out of Buffalo with a guy who also was accepted. I didn’t know whether to fly down with her or not, especially since she had never flown before! I decided to wait and travel down to see her after she had settled in (hence the trip report!) :)

Gotta run guys…if you’ve read this far, I’m impressed! I will continue to post and keep the drama going… :cool1:

Excellent beginning!

I was right there jumping up and down with you, with tears in my eyes and joyful screams on my lips!

(that is, you have succeeded in transporting us to the moment!)

How cool is it that you get to go to Disney World to see your daughter who WORKS there? Can't wait to read what happened! :)

How exciting (and disappointing on the typo)! I was so excited for your daughter upon reading she was hired then had tears in my eyes for the disappointment but hope it turns out alright - can't wait to read more!

Back to my laundry :laundy:

Got me hooked and looking forward to the rest of the report. Glad to see your DD got her wish, but sorry to hear about the typo!!

I would be so excited. I can't wait for more. I am so sorry about the change. I hope some magic is in store for you.

Well, now that the drama of Mel’s TR being locked and her moving it to the Community Board has calmed down, I guess I feel a little more like carrying on with my mundane report!

On May 14th (Mother’s Day – what an emotional day!) Shayna flew out to work for the mouse! We had all the paperwork organized, passports ready to cross the border and off we went. The entire family traveled to see her off, and we were so pleased that things went well at the border. We explained why we were crossing, that she was going to work at WDW for the summer, and she was wished good luck and we were on our way! Get to the airport, where the SW people were kind enough to let me go through security with her. We met up with the young man we found out was also going down, and asked how he managed at the border. He says, “No problem, just got the paper signed and the card stapled into my passport”. Huh? OMG! Somehow, we weren’t told that you have to get some kind of card at customs and the customs guy must not have known about it either. That didn’t get things off to a very good start. I started asking around and was told they could ‘fix it’ in Orlando. At this point, Shayna’s panicing and it wasn’t the way I wanted to have to say goodbye. I can’t put into words how hard it was to walk away from her…to this day when I think about it, it makes me weep…

She arrives in Orlando safely and the Disney people scoop them up and they’re off! Shayna wasn’t the only one who didn’t get the card, but unfortunately it delayed her training/work for almost a week! Not a good start!

On Day 10, we get a call with her crying, saying it’s not what she thought, and she wanted to come home! OMG! We were firm, told her it was normal to be homesick, and she had to work it out, but boy was it hard to do! Her roommate actually did self-terminate and left a couple of days later. Another student from Ireland only lasted 5 days and went home!

Well, all this backstory brings me to my quickie trip!

I was able to get great rates on a flight on SW out of Buffalo so I asked my mom if she wanted to come with me and my youngest son Jarrett – 14 years old. She actually jumped at the opportunity and I booked ASSports (it was the only value available).

Our flight was uneventful (first flight for my son – we always drive!), used ME which was fabulous and arrived at our resort around 2:30 p.m. We were hoping Shayna would be there to see us before she had to work at 5 p.m. and we all arrived around the same time.

Again, I can’t describe how wonderful it was to see her and hug her after 4 weeks! I had never been away from her that long and it was soooo wonderful! She looked great and was so excited to tell us that she took a ‘personal day’ and didn’t have to work at all that night! Woohoo!

We had worked it out that she would stay with us in our room and not go back to her apartment at all during our stay. A nice break from a somewhat depressing living arrangement and it would feel more like a vacation for her. We all dumped our stuff, checked out the pool for a bit (boy was it busy!) and then headed out to DTD for dinner at Earl of Sandwich!

Getting tired…thanks for reading…next installment soon! :teeth:

Hi Bonnie,
Am dying to find out what happened next, really curious to hear Shayna's opinions about working for the Mouse,
Claire xx

Enjoying your TR Bonnie! We have travelled to Waterloo for my son's hockey team~we had such a wonderful time! :sunny:

Wow! :cool1:

I am enjoying your report. I can only imagine the gloom that hung around your household the weekend you had to wait to find out what the problem with the assignment was all about. I still cannot believe that the problem couldn't have been easily fixed. :confused3

Thanks for sharing!

Good stuff! Can't wait to hear how things are going now... hope she is happier!

It's a shame your daughter was not enjoying herself. :sad1: My daughter is there doing the summer College Program and absolutely loves it. :lovestruc She's working custodial at Cirque and picking up some other jobs around the resort. Her roommates have been great, and they have made friends with others. She made dinner last night for about 8 of them, and they hang out together when they're not working.

BTW, if your daughter is doing the summer program, they only choices of jobs were custodial or fast food service.

We are taking the entire family down, plus my son's girlfriend, in August to see her for her 21st birthday. We'll be there when her program ends and she'll fly home with us. We're going to celebrate her birthday at Raglan Road. She's also joining us for dinner at California Grill on our first night there. Looking forward to it. :cool1:

Bonnie ~
I hope your daughter is enjoying herself now. I'm curious for you to post where she's working and how she likes it.
My daughter was a CP last year from January - July. She was at Epcot, a boat captain on the Friendship Boats both in the lagoon and out on the Gateway between Epcot & MGM. She LOVED it! :boat: Basically if she wasn't working, she was playing in the parks with her co-workers most all the time. She rarely hung out with her roommates, but formed very close friendships with others working on the boats. In fact this summer she's living and working in the Keys with 4 of her Disney friends. They also stayed on as "seasonal" cast members and go to WDW every few months to work for a couple of days.
Disney and Epcot in particular will always have a special place in her heart as will the wonderful people she met there.

Wow - as you can see from my name I worked on the Friendship boats as well!!

Loved my 2 sumemrs there (1998-1999) and still talk to all my friends from the program almost every day :)

I'm enjoying this TR very much and can't wait for the next installment!

PS...who's Mel and why would her TR have been locked?...and how come she has to go to the Community Board...I thought if you were doing a TR they "make" you come over here to the TR Board...Oh dear, so confused.
