I think my dear pup Sully, 8 month old Golden, as a broken toe and I have to take him to the vet tomorrow. He has been limping since Tuesday night after he played with a neigborhood dog. I just thought he was sore after being couped up all winter. Well, this is Sunday and he is still limping. I talked to my neighbor, who is a vet, and she recommended that I take him in for X-rays.

What do they do for a broken toe? My poor puppy.

Just hoping for a little pixie dust.

I am sorry to hear about your Golden pup. I don't know what they can do about a broken toe. There isn't much for a human other than let it heal. But, I would give him extra love, a little massage of all the areas of his legs and some special treat. Taking him to the Vet :thumbsup2 excellent idea. Sending pixiedust: for the little guy or maybe big guy to feel better. :goodvibes

Are you sure it's not a nail? My little one, Harley, has torn two nails in the past 2 months and it made him limp. One was torn at the base and bled quite a bit; the other was halfway through the nail and didn't bleed as much unless he bothered it.

With the first one, I took him to the vet since it was torn at the base and barely hanging on. The only thing we really could do was shave the area and apply medicated cream to it and wrap it up.

the wrapping bit didn't go over well - nothing we did would keep it on! It eventually fell off on it's own. With the 2nd nail, we again tried to wrap it up and that didn't last - that one fell off, too.

One they both broke off, he walked normal again.

I hope your baby didn't break his foot/toe somehow; I'm not sure they can do much other then wrap it up well and let it heal but it's def worth a trip to the vet.

I'm sending lots of pixie dust your way. We just had to put our black lab to sleep on Friday and it has been an absolutely devastating weekend.

I would definitely check for a broken nail like a previous poster suggested. Our dog had that a few years back and he definitely limped because of it. I hope it's just a nail and nothing's broken!

My dog is ridiculously spoiled so when she started limping awhile ago I immediately took her to the vet. She had just gone to the groomer the week before and when they cut her toenails they had cut her to the skin and it got infected. Her toe was huge! They put a cast on her foot so she couldn't chew on it! It was so sad to see her hobbling around. Needless to say we got a new groomer. I would definitely recommend going to the vet tomorrow.

Thanks for the Pixie Dust.

I don't think it is a toe nail. My neighbor, the vet, examined his paw pretty good and said that she doesn't see anything wrong. Nothing stuck in there, no bleeding and the nails look okay. That is what has me worried. Something is wrong with his foot and it isn't visible :guilty: .

I will update after our vet visit today.

Our chocalate lab Bridgette was limping when she was 6 months old and she had a small fracture in her leg. I did ask the vet how she could walk if it was broken but I ndon't recall what he said. She grew up to be fine with no
problems.

Hoping your pouch feels better soon! :thumbsup2

My Dad's yellow lab broke her toe - playing hard one weekend with the kids. They took her to the vet and had her x-rayed. I think the vet gave her some meds, and had them keep her pretty inactive for a while. She is good as new now.

Hope Sully is feeling better soon.

Why in the world would you wait for almost a week to tend to this? :confused3

Please let us know what the vet says today. Is there any whining at anytime? Or just the limping?

This is a valid question, but I want to clarify that we did not wait a week to take care of Sully. I actually called the vet on Thursday morning and they prescribed rest and asprin. They said to call back in a few days if he didn't seem to be getting better. On Saturday, my neighbor, the vet, examined him. She couldn't see any injury so she suggested he could possibly have a broken toe. I immediately called my vet and they set him up with an appt. for today.

He hasn't been whining, wimpering or anything. In fact, on Wednesday, a friend and her chocolate lab came over and they went off running and playing. B/c he has been acting fine, other than the limp, I honestly thought he was sore from his romp with his puppy friend.

So, we are off to the vet in about 30 minutes. I will let you all know how it goes.

Thanks for the kind thoughts :teeth:

Just back from the vet...

Sully has Panosteitis. It is an inflammation in his ulna bone. This condition occurs in large breed, young dogs that are still growing. My 8 month old Golden fits the bill. Panosteitis happens spontaneously and basically fixes itself. I am happy to know that we didn't do anything to cause Sully pain, but we will have to give him some pain meds for a few weeks. Sully will have to stay in the house for awhile and he shouldn't have any playdates for at least a month.

Basically, good news. He will grow out of it on his own. His joints all look great and there are no fractures, tears or strains.

My poor pup.

Thanks for all the pixie dust!!!

I'm glad there is an answer but sorry there isn't a quick fix. Poor little guy! He'll miss those playdates I'm sure =)

Glad to hear your pup will be on the road to recovery! :sunny:

I was going to mention panosteosis this morning but didn't have time to reply to your thread(had to go to work). I used to raise German Shepherds and have encountered this several times. It is also called wandering lameness. It can go from leg to leg. They do tend to outgrow it. It can go away and then come back. Have patience and take it easy on him when he is limping, it will eventually stay away.
