I guess I have to sell my house. Ocean county NJ is out of control. They must think all the middle class people living here can afford such a crazy tax hike! All the neighbors got together and hired a lawyer, but i really doubt this will help. At first we were got an increase from $4000 to $7200 but our tax bill came in the mail saying it was going to $10,000. I can see alot of for sale signs going up in the next few weeks, but i'm wondering who can afford these taxes.

Call the lawyers, call the media, write letters... & stick together.

Insane that's 500 more a month.

Good luck

WOW.. so thankful I live in Louisiana. Well for the most part ;).

I hope you all can work something out asap!

That is insane! Is the town/county/municipality planning any really big infrastructure projects that might account for such a huge jump? Did they let you know why they raised it so much? There must be some reason.

The same thing happened to my mother in NY. Her taxes were around $5000 per year for over 10 years and then were increased to $10,000 per year. The town tried to fight it(everyone had the same huge increase) but nothing was able to be done about it. It was legal and they had justification for it(I don't remember exactly what that was).

I know it stinks and I am so sorry this happened to you! I hope there is something that can be done, good luck!

Good heavens! I can't imagine!

Our taxes are supposed to go up this year, I hope not by that much.

So sorry that you have to deal with that.

This is why the entire northeast is eventually going to fill up the Carolinas. Hope the Carolinas have enough room for everyone! :sad2:

It's nuts here in NJ. I know plenty of people paying $15,000-$20,000 in property taxes, and they are not living in mansions either. Ugh.

Time for a Jersey tea party!

I have family in NJ. I wonder if they got hit the same?

Mikeeee

Just what we need... more Yankees! ;)

In NC, I have 1700 sq ft home on 3/4 acres of land in a Raleigh suburb. My tax bill was $1200 last year. I would be in serious trouble if we had a rate hike like that!

Is it the tax rate that increased or is it the assessment on your properties that increased?

How on earth do people pay that!!???

I have 2100 sq feet on almost an acre, in a nice neighborhood with amazing public schools. I think we are at about 700.00 a yr. There is no way we could pay something like that ever. I guess the income levels are higher there?

I'm in Texas. Our property tax is $10,800 per year. Of course, we do not have a state income tax. Everyone I know budgets between $700-$1000 per month for property taxes.

I can't believe there's someone still in Jersey who's been paying $4000/yr for property taxes. All of my inlaws are in Jersey and they all pay triple that and up. It is crazy. I agree with you that it's hard on the middle class. :sad2:

Ours just went down here n CS but if it is any consolation to you my electric bill is still higher then the property taxes you pay.

Well it NY & NJ seem to think that the

majority are making huge incomes, in reality that is not the case and

yet increases are becoming more frequent & in amounts that are

exorbitant. Folks salaries are definitely not increasing at a rate to

keep pace with these increases - - - it is out of control like we've

never seen before :faint:

Exactly. I wish the Yankees would stay! I wish people would stay in NJ - I hate how my town and church keep losing people to the Carolinas. I start resenting the Carolinas for taking away all these people I miss!!! :(

But with tax rates like you stated, it makes no sense for many families to stay here.

Trust me, not that much higher! I'm a renter (can't save for down payment) and I'm paying $1360 for a 70 yr old 700 sq ft garden apartment and that's hundreds less than it would be if I hadn't come in $165 below market value 14 years ago.(The previous tenant had lived here so long that they couldn't bring it up to market value and keep within the limit) Our town is rent controlled but my rent always goes up 4% each year. Unfortunately we don't make double or triple what most of the country does-we just pay that much more to live here where we grew up.

Wow!!!!! I know so many people who moved out of NYC to Jersey for the lower property taxes. Now it's being raised by so much?? We pay $7000 a year, but it's been constant for a long time. I hope we're not next! It's getting harder just to make mortgage payments for many people, and now this big tax increase...it doesn't seem fair. I hope your community can fight it, but the excuse will be that the state is in dire need of the money. NJ is going to ruin it's middle class with this burden. I'm sad to hear about this.

That is unfortunate to hear incomes arent much higher.
Hubby was offered a job with a large company in New Jersey yrs ago and we decided we didnt want to raise our kiddos that far from family.

Sometimes we wonder if we made the right decision, reading things like this make me happy we stayed here.
