My poor baby has to eat cheese

The original article stated that the lunch provided as punishment met the minimum requirements for school lunch. I'm guessing that the lunch provided was probably a cheese sandwich with fruit or veggie on the side and a drink (probably milk?)

Good for them, if the students as a partial or whole are going to cause a big problem in the cafeteria then this seems to be a good way to show them what happens when they act like fools

I have issues with people that cant afford to feed their children a sandwich.

I also know for a fact that many of these people have the money to do other things, but will refuse to feed their children for ONE day.

Why have children if you can't afford to feed them?:confused3

I truly believe if you can't make a sandwich for your child that is allergic to cheese for one day, Children and Youth Services need to get involved.

Yes, but what if they decided they wanted to buy their lunch that day, then find out it was this cheese sandwich thing? Did they know beforehand?
Then they suck it up and eat a cheese sandwich for a day. :confused3 If that wasn't good enough for them, then the next day they could bring their own lunch. We're talking high school kids here.
It's prison food

That will be good practice for the little darlings so later in life when they are IN PRISON they will know what to expect! :rolleyes1

Yep, and that mother needs to also understand that in prison, if there is a riot, whether their kid started it or not, all the prisoners get put on lockdown. Is is fair?

No MAYO??? That's just wrong, how can these poor kids be expected to choke down a sandwich with NO MAYO???

Wow... parents are a constant source of amazement to me; on the other hand my DD would be DELIGHTED, she loves plain cheese sandwiches :thumbsup2
OMG...horrors...NO MAYO! LOL

You know, sometimes kids just need to learn that "Life's a ***** and then you die." ;) If my kid came home and said all they had was cheese sandwiches that day because OTHER KIDS had a food fight (because I'd be telling him that I had better not find out that it was him...and honestly, I feel comfortable saying it would NOT be him), I'd say "Oh well." :confused3 And he'd have his choice that day...eat the sandwich or don't eat the sandwich. Missing one meal wouldn't kill him.

Well, there ya go! LOL

Guess I'm in the minority here.

I thought schools had to provide balanced meals? Yes, I realize they're not always healthy but I don't think a single cheese sandwich is enough sustenance to get you through the day.

What if the kid is allergic to dairy? They aren't gonna eat? I know around here, the school is required to give the child a lunch even if they forgot (or "forgot") their money to pay for it... so I'm surprised that they're allowed to do this. The blanket punishment things drives me batty, too, as I was always the well-behaved child and I would be livid if I were being punished because of someone else.

IMO, withholding food should not be a punishment. I have a feeling this won't go on for very long.

And obviously, kids make stupid decisions sometimes. Even good kids who know better. That doesn't mean they're all going to wind up in jail.

From what I saw in the article nobody is "withholding" food. They just aren't giving them a hot lunch. I think it's ridiculous that anyone is even upset about this. I can tell you that my child would not eat a cheese sandwich - but she would eat the sides. Nobody has to go without in this situation unless they are being pigheaded and stubborn. That's what is wrong with our children today - they never have consequences for their actions....or if they do they really aren't "uncomfortable" enough to deter the behavior.

it happened at altantic city high school. a very poor school district so these kids should be happy about what they get no matter what it is. but knowing the great state of new jersey thats spends way too much money these kids probaly eat really good at home with all the food stamps that new jersey gives them or whatever they call food stamps now. there is nothing wrong with a cheese sandwich i usually eat it a couple times a week just because its quick to make. in fact its lunchtime now i think thats what i will have for lunch.

I have to agree:thumbsup2

If you are so poor that you can't afford to buy your children food, wouldn't you be happy for ANY food that was given to them for free?

What is so bad about a cheese sandwich anyway? I love cheese sandwiches :confused3 and there better not be any mayo on my cheese sandwich either, that is just plan gross

This is a bit off topic, but my mom works at non-profit organization that does baskets every year for Thanksgiving. A few years ago a lady called a week or two before Thanksgiving and told them she would be there to pick up her basket on whatever date and could they give her two turkeys this year because she was having a lot of people over :scared1: People don't appreciate anymore, they expect.

The food fight was coordinated by cellphone. If you can afford a cellphone you can afford a sandwich.
I didn't even catch that. How true!

And another thing...how much did they value the lunch that they were flinging around the cafeteria? Not so much, apparently.

OMG:headache:

This is too much. Really. I can't take it any more.

Why, oh why, are we feeding people with taxpayer dollards if they can afford cell phones?

Enough is enough:mad:

When will we get our country back:guilty:

I agree with everything but your last statement and since that heads straight into muddy water I will leave it at that.

Yes. Wow.

Now, of course that does not apply to people down on their luck. I will FEED them any day:hug:

So, let me rephrase that:

I have issues with people that smoke, have cable TV, have cell phones, can afford gold teeth, have pimped out cars, continue to pop out more and more children, etc, and can’t “afford” to feed their child a sandwich.

I don’t want to pay their way.

How’s that;)

I don't find anything particularly wrong with what the school did but I find A LOT wrong with the bolded statement. Kids have NO control over whether they get a free lunch or not and to say that a low income kid should just be "thankful" for what they get makes it sound like they should just be thankful to get the crumbs thrown at them by the "better" kids not on free lunch. :sad2: That is just sad

This is what I want to know too. If they were told this was the consequence, fine. But if the fight happened and then the school sprung it on everyone the next day -- regardless of involvement? I'd be upset too.

I would hardly call a cheese sandwich "crumbs"

You should be taught to be thankful for a "free ride".
