My Pet Peeve - "I haven't read this thread but...."

I know I'm beating a dead horse!!! But I really want to know. If you post something, why would you post if you thought no one was reading what you wrote?

Who does everyone think is reading their posts? Maybe no one is reading anyone's?

When I post, I think the OP is reading what I wrote. If I start a thread, I will read everything. If not, I have neither the time nor the interest, unless the topic really fires me up.

Personally I try to read all of the thread before I reply. Many times people will post something along the lines of what I would have, saving me the time. You see a lot of this on the Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies board. Someone will ask a question and there will be 5 identical answers in a row.

I guess I reply to about a 1/4 of the threads I read. Many times I just feel no need to give my opinion, but when I do I hope someone will take the time to read it. Maybe I can make 'em smile or think about something in a new way. Many times I read stuff that makes me want to debate the poster. But as hard as it is, I try to refrain.

I post to answer the OP (much as I'm doing now) and the x% of people who do read every post. Just because some read every post doesn't mean everyone has to and just because I don't read the other posts on one thread, doesn't mean I don't read all of the responses on another.

But if you haven't read the thread at all, I don't think you should post. I don't think you should expect anyone else to read what you've read if you haven't read what others have read? What if everyone did this? Everyone would just be posting to hear themselves post!

Why is it or should it be required to read OTHERS responses when responding to the OP'er?

Oh and I didn't read the rest of this thread JUST the originial post.

I like auntpolly's posts! I do read yours!:D

I'm on here so much that sometimes I have to just choose some of the posts to read. If I read them all I'd never be able to get off of the computer. It is an addiction, you know.:D

If the OP asks a question or states an opinion I see no problem with answering that directly. Why would I have to read all of the posts all of the time to formulate my own answer?

Typically I do read the responses but some threads take a left turn midway through and everyone is debating an issue that was not originally brought up. Am I supposed to go with the flow and add to the conversation or answer the OP? I play it by ear.

Because it drives me crazy when I post something and then someone else comes along behind me and posts the EXACT same thing. It's a pet peeve of mine and I wouldn't want to do it to someone else if I can help it. Just my two cents.
Yes! I feel the same way. ;) I usually read all the posts. More often than not, more than one person will say what I'm thinking. I just hit the back button without posting.

oooooohhhhh yes! I hate that too! :headache: But what's worse is when others come afterward and tell them what a good point they made!!!!!!!!

That happens to me too! I figure I must be on a lot of ignore lists or something!

That said, I don't mind when people post that "they haven't read the whole thread but are responding". I see it mostly on really long threads. I really think that is much better than those who post as if they've read everything, but it's clear they haven't.

First, thanks!

And then, I agree with you. Most times you can't read all the posts. I'm just talking about when people say haven't read the thread at all. If the thread is a gazillion pages long, I just make sure I know what's being talked about currently.
