I should probably post this on the cruise reports board, but since I'm not actually on the cruise and just relaying info, I'll just put it here.
If you've read any of my other posts, you'll know that my parents have taken my kids on the 7/24 Magic sailing. They are first time cruisers, we booked late, and it was all very nerve-wracking for them. I dropped them at the airport last Friday and have been anxiously awaiting a call--which I just got.
They were booked in a Cat 9, GTY stateroom. When they got their documents we found out that they were on Deck 1, cabin 1060. My mom was pretty bummed about this because many of the comments for Deck 1 rooms are negative. We were hoping they would get an upgrade at the port. No upgrade, but mom reports that she is VERY happy with the Deck 1 room. She says the two portholes are fine (actually "very nice" in her words). You can close each of them to block out the sun if need be. They do not feel claustrophobic at all in the room (another of my mom's concerns). They love it. They LOVE Deck 1. They said that compared to the other decks they have been checking out it is SO VERY QUIET. Virtually no foot traffic. They are very pleased and would book that deck again in a heartbeat.
The next topic my mom raved about was the shows. All of them are exceptional and the cast is great, very talented. I think she used the word "magnificent."
She says that they have enjoyed all the food. The kids weren't too impressed but that doesn't surprise me since it is not important to them.
Now, the kids, they are another matter. My DD (12) and DS (9) sounded like they were enjoying themselves. However, my mom tells me that the kids are not enjoying the cruise as much as they, my parents, are. They are having fun but have both said that they aren't crazy about cruising. As the week wears on, they are finding more things to enjoy. Now don't get me wrong, she says that they are extremely busy but I think they prefer WDW or a beach vacation to cruising. They both went to the lab/clubs one time and did not want to go back. No real complaints but it just isn't their thing (as I suspected). What they are really loving are the Family Games. Not sure what those are, but they want to do all of that stuff. My DD says she has made one friend on the cruise but DS has not made any.
Seasickness--no one in my family (but me) is prone to motion sickness. They ride all the rides and generally have no problems. One day they were at sea and they had 12 foot waves instead of the usual 2-4 foot ones. They were at some activity on one of the higher decks towards the middle. My DD got seasick and the rest of them started feeling bad. They all took a Dramamine and that helped. Fortunately the rough seas abated quickly and everyone recovered. My mom was happy she was not on a higher deck stateroom that day!
Today they were at St. Thomas. They decided to stay on the ship in the morning while most people went on their excursions. They LOVED that and said it was quite wonderful being on the ship while most of the people were out. They left the ship in the afternoon and were just going to do some walking around.
I can tell my parents are having a great time. Wish the kids were doing better. My mom said the kids just don't know how to stop and unwind. She keeps trying to get them to relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors while they eat breakfast, etc., but all they want to do is get moving to the next thing. So, my parents aren't getting too much down time.
They went to the "safe" beach the other day, but one of the beachgoers decided to go "au natural". Apparently my son has been talking about it non-stop!
I guess that's about all I can remember from the phone call. Hope this helps somebody!
