My opinion of the Poly-flamesuit doned!

Hey, Disneymim, I'm from the NE as well, maybe that's the majority of Poly lovers, those that live in misery 9 months out of 12. It's kind of like why I never take trips to the beach, because I live there, and while I do take surf trips, it's not for the beach, but for the surf.

The Poly is one of my absolute FAV's. It reminds me of Hawaii (where we got married), so there are no complains from me on your lovely review !!!

The Poly always brings back good memories for our family since we spent 10 years in Hawaii. It always seems to remind the kids of stuff we used to see.

Darn! I lived in a beach city in California for 29 years, have vacationed in Hawaii, Fiji and New Zealand, and just booked the Poly for our trip. Am I going to hate the theming? LOL!

But then, the theming had nothing to do with our hotel choice. It was mostly about location. That, plus the GF seems too stuffy for our tastes. After dressing up for work all week, every week, schmoozing and getting schmoozed in elegant restaurants, etc, the last place we want to be on vacation is somewhere opulent.

On the flip side, we stayed at WL last time, and now being residents of Colorado, we weren't impressed at all, and are continually surprised when people rave about that place.

Give me a barefoot, ultra-casual atmosphere any day! But no flames from me, either. That's why Disney has so many different resort themes, right? Something for every taste. If we all liked the same hotel, it'd be impossible to book it, and the prices would skyrocket!

No flames here either. Poly was the perfect choice for our family, but I don't disagree with what you are saying. I think the posts that get flamed are the ones that bash the people who stay at any resort, directly or indirectly (implying they are cheap, rude, snobs, have no taste, etc). I really appreciated critiques of all the resorts when I was making my decision. When people explain *why* they like or don't like a resort it is really helpful (as you did). Half the time I found the pluses for one person would be minuses in my book or that the reason someone didn't care for a place would actually be bonus points for me. I didn't really put as much stock in anyone's opinion of the resorts, but rather how they arrived at that opinion. There are lots of choices at Disney and something for everything.

I love to visit the Poly for dinner and even to walk through the lobby but I've stayed there twice and it just isn't for us. I seem to have this thing about wanting our hotel to have the rooms, restaurants, front desk, etc. all in one building. It's just my personal preference.

So sorry you didn't like it! We love it and will never stay anywhere else. Good thing Disney has plenty of resorts you can stay at to meet your liking. Hope you had a great time otherwise.

No flames here either ! Having been flamed my own self I would not want that to happen to anyone else , it can turn somewhat normal people crazy
But back to your post. Some people hate resorts for the same reason some love it. Just imagine if everybody liked the Poly, we would never get a room there

Could I get some of it at the Mai Kai in Ft. Laud? Sure, but it won't have the monorails or the light parade.

Hilarious! I'm from Miami, and have visited Mai Kai on more than a few occasions (weddings, etc). I always think, "This place and the Polynesian Resort are kissing cousins."

I think it is a great observation and I especially can appreciate your statement that the theme might be lost on you being from Florida.
I get turned off by the theme at the WL in the same way because it is much like the lodges that are near me (northern California). I don’t know that the Polynesian was ever going for that Luxurious feel but maybe you were expecting something more like a Luxury Hotel in Hawaii and that is not what I would say the Polynesian is trying to reflect. I am glad you tried it and hopefully some of the other advantages of the Polynesian allowed you to enjoy it and not be sorry you tried it the one time.

Just wanted to say that I think Steve has a good point. Some people may be thinking of the luxury hotels in hawaii. I think the Poly tries to give a more native feel to the theme.

Glad you had a nice trip. My friend lives near Atlantic City and HATED the Boardwalk area. This is after hearing my huge raves of the place. She also said that it was just too much like home (albeit a lot cleaner). Hope you find the resort that matches your tastes perfectly.

Hey Tinkbell, I live in South Jersey, and have no desire to visit the Boardwalk Inn. Nothing against the resort itself, it's just that I live 50 yards from the boardwalk here in Ocean City.

No flame from me either Susy. I have stayed at the Poly 3 times and it is a beautiful resort and I have never been disappointted in the room or service, but that being said I probably will not stay there again. I lived in Hawaii for several years so for me its like been there done that. My favorite place to stay when I saved my money is the Cont Tower. It doesn't matter which side I have enjoyed watching the fireworks and the light parade on the lake. It's great that Disney has so many themed resorts, the perfect fit for every family, the elegance of the GF, the entertainment of the boardwalk or the fun of waking up every morning seeing reminders from years gone by.

Besides the excellent (IMHO) theming of the Polynesian Resort, what I like best about it is the friendly atmosphere and how when something has gone wrong and a mistake has been made (which can happen anywhere), they truly seem to care and try to do something to make up for what has gone wrong.

We're all human and this isn't "paradise" even though the Polynesian Resort comes close to it in my book, but when mistakes are made I know that the CMs at the Polynesian will try to do whatever they can to apologize, fix the problem, and try and make it up to me in some way if possible.

Steve/Tikiman, I'll always remember what you wrote on another board because I try to keep it in mind when things get me down and mistakes happen. You wrote, "We do get disappointed when service is not as good as the last time (which is random)... I can only speak for myself that the few times I have had a CM with a bad attitude or a little lacking on personality has but outweighed by the amount of CMs that treat you like you are part of the family."

And, I'm sure, even the good CMs have a bad day now and then.
