My new Puppy is driving me crazy!!

You know what's spooky about these dogs... I'll see her laying down in the living room, so I walk into the other room, I turn around and the Brit is sitting there staring at me.. It's the creepiest thing! But it's funny at the same time. I noticed this new pup is VERY watchful..always watching my every move.. Won't take her eyes off me... !

Key into this "watching" and start training!!!!! :thumbsup2
Half of the battle is to get the dog to "watch".

Happy walking and training!!!!:yay:

Here is a fairly good picture of Remy with my daughter.

Grendel, Berkely is gorgeous!! Wow!

Yes, Remy has a way of melting your heart and he gives you that look, like "how could you be mad at me, I'm so darn cute" and he is! If you are ready to take on a Brittany, they will reward you 1000x over with their wonderful nature.

Grendel, does Berkely howl at all? Remy is a howler. If he is lonely in the night, he just howls and howls. If we leave him home, our neighbors tell us how he just moans and howls all day long. I'm going to see if I have a picture in my Kodak Gallery, but I'll have to upload it to another site before I'm able to put it here.

thank you!! i think he looks great...still amazes me that someone paid $1000 for this dog and didnt know the breed and couldnt handle it...but worked out for me. I knew nothing about this breed until we were going to get him. If I just went by what I had read..I might have not wanted the committment...but...the rewards of this dog are so great....and to be honest i think the energy he has.....motivates me to do more things...

Berkeley doesnt howl...but he has started to bark....if he hears something out side..he will jump up and start barking at it..and i have to tell him that its OK...hes a good boy..and be quiet now...but no howling thank god...we have many dogs in the neighborhood..and they all the ability to set each other off..so thats part of the barking i think.....

the one thing I was thinking...is I should contact all of these toy makers that say they have a indestructabile toy...and say ..oh yeah?? let me have it for a day....there is not one toy that he cant shread to nothing.....except very very thick hard bone..... i laughed when we gave him a Kong...and was like ..hah..lets see you destroy this...and he did... *sigh* :)

yeah..post your pictures!! id love to see them....
plus its nice hearing about an older brittany... i cant imagine Berkeley ever slowing down...

Yeah...I know we have been told how lucky we are...for some reason people dont expect our brittany to listen....and while i could do better on some traiing things...for the most part hes a very attentive dog that wants to listen and please....and get assurances as to what he should be doing...it makes it alot easier...my biggest problem is brand new scenarios...where he is on overload...and he's off leash...i think i need to introduce him a little slower sometimes.....but thats my fault not the dogs..

Dznylvr, most Spaniels lay that way. I had a Springer Spaniel before Remy and he laid the same way. When I was a child, my Dad loved Cocker Spaniels and they all laid that way too...

Last night I tried to take some digital pics but this little thing moves so fast, none of the pictures were coming out. I managed to get one, I'll post it on here later when I upload it.

Congrads on your new happy full of energy puppy! We adopted a 4 yr old Brittany male last Nov.06 from our local shelter. He was given up by previous owners because too many pets or he snapped at cats. Sweetest guy ever, no major behavioral problems at all. His name is DANIEL, the name he came with. He ADORES people. We are greeted everyday by people who want to know more about him. We didn't have any puppy issues because of his age. He can be very playful and fast when he wants to be. But very good natured and calm in the house. He does well with our 6 yr old DS and his friends. We do walk him at least 2 times a day. I also watch Dog Whisperer and take tips from Ceasar. He is quiet outdoors on our patio unless Mr. Squirrel is teasing him in the tree. We are very proud of him. We are a family that had no problems adopting an older shelter dog and we would do it all over again. You will have a life time of love from your pup. :cloud9: :goodvibes I wish I knew how to post a photo of DANIEL.

I rescued "Choppy" (see my signature picture) in April. He's mostly cocker with very long legs and some speckled coloring that you don't usually see in an American cocker.

We've thought he probably had a 1/4 or 1/8 of some other type of spaniel. I was thinking Springer, but now I think it is probably Brittany. It doesn't matter - we love him to death.

Congrats! I hope she's very lucky! :)

I have a dog [he's in my signature] he is also very "hyper", lol! He loves to run and play outside! Like most dogs he's afraid of blowdryers, vacums, etc. He is not really trained yet. He's still on a leash. He's a labrador retriver [go look it up;)] and all he can do is sit, down, catch, come [not really;)] and give me your paw. We are teaching him how to roll over ;)! His name is Harley, like the motorcycle, Harley Davidson :moped:, lol!

Aww, anyways she's such a cutie! :cutie:

Hi can someone who has Brittany's help me with a few questions??
First is, she seems floppy on her back feet. Like she falls alot and my dog mostly hops when she runs. Is that normal???

Also, it seems like her tummy area is huge and maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I don't remember it being like that last week when we got her. I'm trying to fee if it's her bones, but are Brittany's bellys bulgy?? She goes to the vet on Monday, I hope she's ok

Ah, you sound like a new mom:love: When we rescued our dog he was very thin. He is a normal weight now but dog experts that I have talked to you say that Brittanys are naturally thin and should be. I would write down the questions you have for the vet. Also Daniel does slide on kitchen floors a lot if he is going to fast. Your questions are all legit.
Daniel had kennel cough(or something similar) during the winter. He is my DH's very first dog and I had a dog as a child so it was like having a new baby. We had a million and one questions for our vet. Luckily she is very gentle, kind and patience with both us and the dog.

Did you do any research about Brittany's? It is a VERY VERY high energy dog.

You need to walk this pup at a minimum 2 hours daily. Must be at a heel to exercise the dog's brain.

If you are not up for this you probably should rethink this dog. It may just not be a match to go with your lifestyle.

This is a dog for jogging, yuppies who are running at 5am everyday.:thumbsup2

No offense but most dog trainers would not agree with heeling a dog for two hours a day. We have an excellent power of the pack type trainer and she says that heeling is very strenous on the dog and at most do it every other block. Secondly you can't take a puppy and just start heeling her ther's a process for training it to heel. I'd start with dog training. A good puppy manners class could be a huge help. Yeah for you for saving the dog - I think you can figure out a way to keep the dog and balance things out!

They were going to put the Brittany to sleep because she was over 5 months old, so I took her.. I saved her life.

Good for you! You'll learn as you go but I agree with the training. Our first golden was a rescue and he was a bit difficult until I went through training with him. He turned out to be a wonderful addition to the family for 12 wonderful years. I still miss him.

With a golden the best way to wear them out is with a tennis ball. When Max was young I could throw the ball for an hour straight and he'd bring it back to me. When he got old we had an understanding, I'd throw it once, but not too far, he'd get it and then take a quick nap. I don't know about a Brittany.

What you describe does not sound normal.

It could just be that her muscles are not strongly developed from being in a small cage for her 5 months of life. Puppies are clumsy, so if it is just periodic falling on slicker surfaces, it is nothing to worry about.

However, if her gait is constantly hopping and not a smooth movement in the run, it could be hip dysplasia or another degenerative disease. Hopefully, the vet will tell you all is ok and just give you some exercises for her. Hip dysplasia showing such symptoms at such an early age could run you thousands of $$$ if you opt for surgery to correct it.

Puppy bellies are often bulgy. But then so are wormy bellies. You might want to bring a fresh stool sample in a baggie for your vet just to rule out any infestations.

Good luck and let us know how your appt turns out.

Daniel: Adopted Nov. 2006 estimated age 4 yrs old. Our cute and sweet furbaby!

Thank you! I'll let you know tomorrow.. I'm crossing my fingers!

I know all of my puppies always had little rotund bellies while they were growing...always looked like little piglets when they flopped down after a meal :) ...but since your going to the vet im sure youll have all of your questions answered quickly.

our britanny is a clutz...and at the same time very graceful..he has deer like legs..and when hes running full speed he flies!! but insdie he trips and falls and all kinds of things all the time...not just on slippery floors...its more like 1/2 of his body is controlled by a different brain....sometimes outside he can take a stumble if hes trying a quick turn at full speed...or something like that...also he has done the hop thing with his back legs from time to time...its usually when im taking him out and he doesnt like what hes walking on...if theres dew in the grass ...or something ....... now if this is the ONLY way your puppy moves it might be more of a reason for conern...but once again..im sure your vet will have all of your answeres for you.....
