As many know, I'm against this war and quite
frankly think it's George W. Bush's new addiction
to power that has placed us in this place. That said,
my parents are quite conservative and have always
been hawks - self proclaimed and proud of it.
We don't dicuss politics any more, fouls family
events and life it too short to mess with those you
love. My mother is a true patriot, state president
and national representitive on many occasions for
the D.A.R. and public speaker about our flag -
expert on flag handling, geneaologist for families
tracing their roots to OUR revolution and a proud
American.
Yesterday, in a casual phone call about my nephew's
birthday party, she asked me what she could do to
help the democratic party defeat George W. Bush.
Mom is and always has been registered republican but
she would be quick to add, does not always vote a
straight ticket.
Mom supports the troops, she and the other church
ladies are packaging things to send to them. she prays
everyday for their safety and safe return. She hates
George W. Bush and thinks he's crazy. She says she
sees addiction in his demeanor and an arrogance
that is very scary and dangerous. She feels he has made a huge
mistake in engaging in this military action, aka"war",
and that this is a no win situation - except possibly for
George Bush and his friends. I think I said something like,
"Mom? Is this you?" Also of note is the fact
that my mother has always been suspect of the UN. At
one time her motto was "Get the U.S. out of the UN".
Mom says all the women at church are feeling this
way when they gather to package things for the soldiers.
I, like my mother, support the troups. The signs in
my yard read " Support our Troops" "Pray for Peace".
My mother is not full of fear or paranoid-she is
rational and votes. I'm hoping there is a huge undercurrent
of people like my mother who will quietly insist that
our government protect it's people, including the soldiers
we have placed in harm's way. Looking forward to 2004
and for the very first time in my life, working for the same
candidate as my Mom.
In the meantime, I will pray for an Iraqi surrender and
a quick one.

 mimi

I hope and pray that we will find many people who feel that very same way next year. :D

I support President Bush and don't see why others see him as arrogant. (Not is this the board to hold that discussion)

However, I also trust those in Washington most likely know more than I do about this sitution.

I do want peace, but not just for us, but also for the Iraqis who apparently will not have it under Saddam.

It is important to get educated about the issues:

The Threatening Storm: The Case for Invading Iraq
by Kenneth M. Pollack

is available on Amazon.com - or at your public library.

My guess is that even thoguh we have access to CNN 24 hours a day, that perhaps the President and his advisers have some "inside" information that they may not be sharing with the whole world as to why we have to do this. Every servicemember I know has a clear understanding and acceptance of the reasons for this conflict, their role in it, the risks they take. I am not sure that the perception one gets of a President based on televised appearances etc is the most reliable way to form an opinion. President Clinton made a very favorable impression on TV...need I say more?

Actually, just in my personal sphere of things I've noticed more support for the president since this war, not less. Now this may just be in my area here in middle America, I don't know, but the folks I know that seemed 'on the fence' or actually disliked the president's leadership now seem to be backing him. His support seems to have 'firmed up' in the last few weeks rather than weakened.

I, too am looking very forward to the next Presidental election ( if we live to make it that long ). I think our current Pres. has us in more trouble than we will be able to get out of. I feel sorry for our next Pres. who will have his hands full digging us out of this mess, IF he can.
Pray for our troops.

Now you understand how George W. Bush feels as he's had to dig us out of the mess the former president got us into because of his inaction...

There are surprises like this on both sides.

I just got back from a trip to L.A., to take my younger son to look at USC.

I also visited a cousin who lives out there, and works in the movie industry. Her father was a career diplomat with the State Department, so she grew up living all over the world, and has always had MUCH more liberal political views than I do. Like you, shortbun, long ago we decided not to discuss politics - the hardest test of our resolve occured when she was here in Florida over Thanksgiving 2000, during the height of the contested election.

Anyway, I was totally shocked to find out that she completely agrees with Bush's decision to go to war to remove Saddam's regime. She also said there are more people in "Hollywood" that are supportive of the Administration's war policy than the news media would have us believe.
