My mom called me today to tell me that she has leukemia:guilty: I am in shock & sad & scared & have been crying all day.

Right now she has zero symptoms except for a high white blood cell count. They basically said they can't treat her with chemo or radiation until other symptoms arise.

She will find out next week if her leukemia is considered "chronic" or not. i'm not sure what this means, but she said if it is chronic, that is good news & she could live for a long time.

What does "a long time" mean? If it's chronic could she live for another 10-15 years? Will she live comfortably or in pain & discomfort? She is only in her late 50's.

I'm just so scared right now.

Thanks for any info you might have.

Sorry, I don't have any words of wisdom. I just wanted to offer you a prayer for your mom.:grouphug:

My father died of Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia in 1965. He had first be diagnosed with it five years earlier and was in out of hospitals four tme prior to having a fatal heart attack. And that was over 40 years ago, medicine has come a long way since.

 It is very possible that this is not life-threatening at all. Many "older" adults develop a type of leukemia that really does not require major treatment and just has to be monitored. I have an aunt and a friend that have this type of leukemia, and they are doing very well. Of course, your mom may have a different type, but if it is the same type, she will most likely be okay. I'm sorry I don't know the specific name.

There are Chronic and Acute types, and if memory serves there are two types of each. For instance, my mom had Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, or ALL, which usually is limited to kids but it has an "early childhood exposure to radiation" component for adults, and my mom was a toddler downwind and downstream from a notorious atomic power lab in Connecticut, and it caught up with her.

My mom actually knew there was something wrong with her for *at least* a year, and they kept running tests b/c she insisted, and was negative for everything, including leukemia. Then finally she tested positive. But she was almost glad, b/c it was an answer to what she had been dealing with for so long with no answers.

This is a scary time. My stepfather has Chronic leukemia (can't remember the exact name/type). He was diagnosed with it probably at least 5 years or so ago? From what I understand, yes, long time can mean 10-15 years or even more.

Unfortunately the Acute type is what took DH's grandmother. But she had symptoms. She went to the dr because she wasn't feeling well and was diagnosed and told she only had a few weeks. She passed away about a month later. But this type comes on quick and hard , so if you mom is having no symptoms then she probably has the chronic type.

:grouphug: to your family.

So sorry for what you and your family are going thru.
Now my DD god father has a form of chronic leukemia (not sure of the name) he was diagnosed 15 years ago. He is watched very close by the DRS and has been doing great.

I will keep you, your mom and family in my prayers. Please keep us posted.

My MIL has a chronic type of leukemia and it has been about 11yrs since she was diagnosed. She really hasnt had any treatment for it she just has to be monitored a bit, I think she gets maybe a couple blood tests a year, maybe only once a year. My thoughts are with you and your mom. Hopefully it will be something that she can live with for a long time to come(painfree too).

Sending prayers to your mom. And wishes for strength for you.

There are several types of Leukemia and treatments vary from doing nothing but monitoring, to medication, to bone marrow transplants. Each treatment is for a different type, so it really depends on the type. Medicine has advanced so much over the years and there is so much that can be done. Don't panic yet, it may be a tough road but with promise at the end......

sending prayers your way:grouphug:

I am so sorry to hear this.... keep strong for her and yourself.... Let is be your sounding board if you need it...
