My MIL is suddenly an expert on all things Disney.

She's been ... I think twice? Once when my DH was a little boy, and once with my BIL's family. They invited her so she could pay for everything.

Anyway, she has been totally enlightening in regards to all the important Disney information I need to know! Since she's not coming with us, she needs to make sure I'm prepared. I just have to share these tips with the DIS. I've been lurking a long time and I can tell you guys are totally clueless!

Chip and Dale's marshmallow roast is a special perk just for people staying in the cabins at Wild Fort.

All the food at the Hawaiian Hotel is terrible and they don't have ANY character meals because there is only one restaurant.

The best food in WDW is at Crystal Kingdom, and you can walk right up anytime.

There is a monorail from Animal Kingdom Lodge to Animal Kingdom; they just haven't connected it to the others yet.

The Rainforest Cafe is right in the middle of Animal Kingdom, and it's the only table service restaurant in the park.

There's no other entrance/exit in Epcot, and there definitely aren't hotels, restaurants, and entertainment on the other side of it.

There are no rides or characters in the World Showcase, just shopping and boring educational stuff.

Watching Wishes costs extra.

Wow. I have only been twice, but I know how to plan a trip inside and out. So, you can go only a few times and be really in the know, however, those are some crazy pointers.

As an AP holder I go to WDW every few months (usually 4-6 times a year). A couple of years ago one of my coworkers who had never been to WDW, came in all excited. Her neice had invited her and her sister (the niece's mom) to go to WDW with them. They were going to pay their ways if they would just help take care of their six kids (his, hers, and theirs). Anyway, she started asking me a few things and I gave her a few pointers. A GP discount code came out about that time for their time frame, so I came in and told her about it, just in case the neice and nephew-in-law didn't know about it. She came in the next night and said she had told them about it, but they didn't want to bother with it and they insisted the only reason I got discounts was because I was an AP holder. I explained to her again that the code I gave her was a general public code that anyone could use to save money on their rooms. They still said it was impossible and refused to even call and check. The nephew-in-law said they had been twice before and knew all the in and outs.

Come to find out out they didn't even know they had character meals or that they could make ADRs. Every one of their meals were counter service, 'because the restaurants were always packed and turning people away'. I had told my coworker about ADRs, but according to her neice, there were no such things and all restaurants were first come, first serve. Excuse me, if you ask to be seated at a restaraunt the first thing they ask is if you have an ADR. What did the neice think they were talking about when they asked during the previous two trips? I had also told her about trying to get the girls into CRT, so they could eat in the castle. According to the know it all nephew-in-law, that proved I didn't know what I was talking about, as there is really nothing inside the castle and it's just for looks. He insists there is no restaurant inside. Oh, I also told her the week they chose was really not a good one (the week of July 4th), but they insisted that was the same week they had gone twice before and it was the best time to go, because most people didn't want to travel on a holiday. I went online and showed her the crowd calendar, but he insisted the parks are always jam packed. She came back talking about how packed the parks were, how long the lines were, how hot it was, and how they didn't really get to ride that many rides due to the crowds. Since this was the basically the third time they had gone that exact week, you'd have thought they'd have figured out to choose a slower week, but that stupid nephew-in-law was too dang arrogant to take any advice and insisted he knew it all. He insisted that the week of July 4th was less crowded than any other week during the summer, because people didn't travel on holidays. I had also talked to her about free dining being offered for Sept that year. When she told the nephew-in-law about that, he told her I was simply lying, that there was no way Disney would give away food for free and also still insisted they wouldn't give room discounts unless you were an annnual pass holder. Yeah, I go 4-6 times a year and am always reading everything I can get my eyes on. He'd been twice and both times had done absolutely no research and still refused to. Yet, he knows everything and I know nothing. lol

These people have always paid rack rate for two rooms, don't know a thing about character meals, have never eaten at a TS restaurant because they are always packed, don't know a thing about free dining (don't forget they have six kids), and the only times they have been down there is the hottest and most crowded week of the year (because they insist that's the least crowded time).lol Oh well, stupid, can't be fixed, especially if they are too arrogant to even want to learn.

I know alot about Disney because I go alot and because I'm always doing the research, because I find it interesting. I don't know everything and I doubt if anyone ever will. I'm willing to learn, even though there are some things I'm not even interested in. For example, I don't know a thing about any of the military discounts or Shades of Green because I don't qualify and don't have an interest. I have no interest in camping, so know very little about Fort Wilderness. I never stay offsite, so don't know a thing about any of the offsite hotels in Orlando. I do keep a constant eye out for any type of room disount, do alot of backstage tours, always keep an AP, use TiW card, and have used the DxDDP and DDP alot, so those I can give advice about, if asked. Unless I am specifically asked though, I do not give advice about Disney, because I feel everyone should do their own research and do their trips their way. Nothing wrong with that. However, when I am specifically asked for advice by someone like I was my coworker and then her arrogant nephew-in-law calls me a liar about things that he could easily find out about using any search engine, yeah I get a little irritated. Some people like my coworker's nephew-in-law refuse to learn, because they think they already know it all, when in all actuallity they know almost nothing. By the way, my coworker and her sister are the ones who always call the guy an arrogant, know it all, jerk. He drives his family bonkers with his attitude. He thinks he knows everything about everything and will argue he's right, even when proven wrong. My coworker says he's hilarious sometimes because he will argue with anyone about even the smallest thing, just trying to prove he knows everything about everything. He''s one of those that would argue the sky is blue until he actually believed it. His poor wife just usually ignores him and agrees with him that he's right, to keep trouble down.

Don't forget it takes 10 tickets to ride Space Mountain!

We can sympathize, my mother MIL (DH's mom) recently went on a Disney vacation. She come home giving us all kinds of information we already knew. Granted most of her info was actually correct. She now wants to stay at POR. She keeps on phoning and saying how beautiful it looks and telling us about all the things you can do there. We have already stayed there 3 times and were the ones who told her she should look at it. Your story gave us a laugh this morning. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your planning.

May have thought that their tickets were only good for WDW (aka the MK) and not those other parks you pay extra for like Sea World, US, DHS, Epcot and AK.

I had a coworker do this to me, well actually it was the coworkers wife, who happens to own the cleaning service that cleans our office.

Anyway, she and her hubby had just got back from Orlando visiting her parents. I asked her about the weather because we are looking at going in early Feb 2013. She asked me why I would want to go back to Disney. - Bad food, terrible motels (her word, not mine) and there is just nothing to do there. But, she still had plenty of tips to give me, none if which were really helpful or even correct.
They had taken their kids 3 times in the late 90's, early 2000's and were just so bored the whole time, worst vacation ever, blah, blah, blah (but yet they went 3 times?). After some proding I finally realized that she didn't know that there were other parks besides MK!! And she thought that Universal and Sea World were part of Disneyworld.

It's fine to not be educated about where you are going on vacation - it really doesn't bother me in the slightest if you chose to not be informed. However, I do not appreciate those people telling me what to do or not to do on my vacation when I am quite educated on the subject!

I love doing itinery's for friends who are first time wdw visitors ,i don't think anyone should go on such an expensive ( from England) vacation without doing some research x:

I remember reading a post here on the DIS where someone overheard a couple at Downtown Disney complaining about how it wasn't worth the money to go to Disney because how could someone pay that much to visit Downtown Disney for a whole week?!!! They thought DTD was Disney! I don't care where I go, I want to know as much as possible about it. I just don't want to waste my money, so I will do as much research as I need to so that I feel comfortable once I get there.

The hardest thing to get "old timers" to realize is that there are almost NO walkups for full service restaurants any longer.

We go through this every time one of our relatives comes with us. She remembers the days of walk up and sit down and will not understand that's not the case any more.

I'm going solo in September and made ADRs because they're all places I absolutely want to eat at and won't risk not getting a table at or waiting 2 hours to get in to. That's what I tell everyone who says they don't want to do ADRs. If that restaurant is going to make or break your trip, make the stupid ADR!!
