This is so true. Please take the advice of so many posters on this board. See a lawyer & get things in writing. After my sister moved out her & her ex met each other to work things out so they didn't have to have a long drawn out divorce. Well, he turned bitter, things got nasty & FINALLY after almost 3 years she was divorced - mind you, there were no children involved.
My sister believed everything he had said to her, she felt bad & when she left & left most of the material things for him. He told her he would do this, that & the other thing & that she could come back & get anything she ever needed. Well, lo & behold a few months after she left, another woman moved into the home, her ex changed the locks & she was never able to get things that belonged to her - personal items - pictures, yearbooks, momentos.
This may never happen to you, but you should always be prepared for the worst. It is hard to imagine anything like this happening right now, but you should never rule anything out.
