Most of South Jerseys mail goes through this building, more than 1 million customers.
Another New Jersey postal worker has a suspected case of skin anthrax. The man, who lives in Wilmington, Delaware, works at the mail handling facility in Bellmawr. That facility has now been shut down.
BELLMAWR, N.J. - Employees at the Bellmawr Mail Processing Center arrived to work only to be sent home. The entire center was closed after it was learned that a 54-year old mail processor is suspected of having the skin form of anthrax.
Im slightly scared, but Im hoping it will all go away, said Marie Allen, a postal worker.
It is not certain how the unidentified male employee may have contracted the disease. He apparently noticed a lesion on his hand over a week ago and went to his doctor to have it checked out.
It didn't look at all like the pictures Ive seen of cutaneous anthrax, which were a crater like sore or lesion that had a dark center, said Postal Service District Manager Mike Brose. This didnt. It looked more like a mole.
In the meantime, the FBI will conduct environmental test inside the facility looking for anthrax spores. All 1,300 employees are being tested and offered medication.
Everyones concerned, and they should be concerned, said Thomas Woodford, from the American Postal Workers Union. Whats going on here is something that nobody expected. This is not what we took on when we came to do our jobs.
The unexpected closure has already complicated life for local residents who came to pick up and drop off their mail.
You just want your mail, and now you got to worry about opening it up and risk your life now, said Sharon Troth, from Bellmawr. Its absolutely insane.
