My Magical Journey to Running the Half Marathon TR Link! p.107

Signing on. I'll have to go back and get caught up though.

I run about 3 miles most workdays during lunch. Well, it's been a little cold lately so I've been DISing instead, but when it gets warmer I'll be back out there. I had to get more active to help the ol' cholesterol and blood pressure. It would be so cool to do the half marathon someday.

Hi Carissa,

sorry I got a bit behind, lots going on in the Scrappie household lately I usually only get every other day on the Dis and when I di it's short snippits...

But I love how everthing is going and all the new little updates..

Ok I have seriously had my last snack binge in the afternoon...I need to get in shape myself...I don't see a 1/2 marathon in my future...but some more regular intentional movement would be good...thanks for motivating me.

I love that you are thinking of doing the weekend now as a couples weekend  I can't wait for our trip alone in 2011.

and i love Wii Fit's yoga and strenthening :thumbsup2

lastly...

My parents used to have two cats just like yours...but they were Noser and Jumper... don't ask on the names...but as a kid I had pet mice...what was my Mom thinking and one was black and white and named Oreo

Keep up the great work,

J~

Beautiful family Carissa! The boys are growing up fast! My oldest just had his 15th birthday...hard to believe.

Lunges and squats.....torture techniques! Keep up the great work! You know what they say about "no pain"! :goodvibes

:welcome: Hey Glenn! Glad to have another runner on board. :thumbsup2 Did you just start running 3 miles or did you have to build up to it?

It's awesome to have everyone motivating each other to get healthy this year! :thumbsup2 And don't worry about checking in. Whenever you can stop by is always a pleasure.

Cool! I was thinking the other day that I'd love to get another kitten and I'd name it Tim Tam after our favorite Austrailan cookies (which are now available at Target!!). ;)

Oh my goodness! He must be taller than you now??

I know. I say, "Bring the pain! Feel the pain!! Love the pain!!!" :yay:

How are your workouts going?

No, worked up to it. I started almost 2 years ago. Started walking, and did that for probably a couple of months. Fast-paced though. Then started jogging. I could probably only jog about a quarter of a mile, and then walk, then jog again. Each time I went out I tried to increase the distance I'd go before walking. After a few months I was up to the 3 miles without stopping and have stayed at that distance, but have tried to improve the times. Over the winter I lose all of my progress, but I know I can work back into it. I went out once last week and was able to do 3 miles without stopping, but I was a couple minutes slower than what I was doing back in November.

I saw there was some discussion about renting DVC points. The 2011 point charts were just released a few days ago and all of January is in the cheapest point "season" ("Adventure Season"). The marathon weekend is not higher. Just FYI.

Awesome. I don't know how true it is, but I read someone say that once you get to the point of being able to run for 3 miles straight, even if you stop for a while, it's much easier to get back into it when you do. That you never really need to start from scratch again.

Thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

I'm glad the shoes are working out for you.:thumbsup2 I haven't read any of the Penquin's books in years but I'm hoping that they will eventually be available for Kindle. Recently I have read three books that were very inspiring and motivational: The Non-Runners Marathon Guide for Women by Dawn Dais (very funny, snarky), Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running by Jennifer Lin and Susan Warner (awe inspiring), and Women Who Run by Shanti Sosienski (ditto). If you ever come across any of these books, I highly recommend them. The Non-Runners...made me laugh out loud and Sole Sisters made me cry and get up off my butt and run.
BTW- I like the motivational pics on your TM. We live on an Army post and occassionally I use the TM at the gym down the street. On a good day there will be a really fit soldier boy on the TM in front of me so I just imagine that they are a)giving me a piggy back ride :lmao: or b)pulling me along at their pace. Usally (a). :rotfl2: The down side is I get paranoid when someone is running on the TM behind me, what if they are watching my butt bounce around!:scared1: It's mesmerizing I'm sure!

:rotfl: Yes, I remember your post about the piggy back ride on the C25K thread. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the book recommendations! I will definitely put them on my list. :goodvibes

What a gorgeous family you have!!!! I'm so motiviated when I read through your reports!! I am trying to lose about 40 more lbs (have lost 30 so far) and I have been in a slump, but knowing others are doing things to improve their health too is a real motivation for me!! So keep up the good work!!

That is hysterical!!!:lmao: Yes I would be paranoid about someone behind me too...

Those books sound good, I'll have to check them out.:thumbsup2

Does anyone know if there is any cute Disney running gear out there? I'm thinking that might make good rewards for myself.

To others who have been through the program or set health goals for yourself, did you have some sort of reward system? And if so, what types of things did you do? I'd love to hear them.

Initially I thought I would allow myself to begin planning for this trip only after I completed C25K. I still think that's a good idea to keep me motivated, but you already know I've been researching resorts. :rolleyes1 Does research count as planning? ;)

~ Week 2 Day 1 ~

On Tuesday I finished up week 1 of the program. I mentioned that I would continue with week 1 for another week. Well, I decided to go ahead and give week 2 a try just to see if I could do it. Let me rephrase that. I knew I could do it, I just wasn't sure how tough it would be for me. :rolleyes1

Week 2 consists of 6 cycles - 90 seconds running/2 minutes brisk walking. Even though my walk times were increased by 30 seconds this week, I found those two minutes went by far, far too quickly! I'd hear the speaker's voice coming back on to tell me it was time to run again and I would be thinking, "Please! Not yet! I haven't gotten my breath back." :headache:

I am happy to report that I did complete the workout. The last run was VERY difficult and I really didn't think I was going to be able to finish it. I admit I stopped a few seconds short of the expected 90, but I'm not going to beat myself up over that.

The discomfort I was having last week is really improving. I felt some of it today, but not nearly as much and not immediately. My thighs were more sore and tired during the run than anything. I think that's a good thing? :confused3

It's funny how this program makes me feel or the aspect of running in general. I get both excited and nervous about tackling each day on the treadmill. Part of me fears it. I'm afraid I won't be able to do it or I will find it too difficult. But, I push myself through it and in the end I feel empowered for making my body do something my mind didn't think it could. :thumbsup2

So, to week 2 I say, "Bring it on!!" :dancer:

My totals for today:

Speed: 3.0 --> 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.5 for brisk walks, 3.5 -->3.0 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.8 miles

Thanks for the compliment! :goodvibes And I'm glad we're all working together to motivate one another. :thumbsup2 And congrats on the 30 lbs! That's awesome!!

WooHOO! You are cruisin! Nice work! I need to PM you about what you're using.

But not tonight. I"m going to sit on my big bum tonight and watch Northanger Abbey with my older girls.

I heard a while ago that there are two kinds of people. People who are motiviated by goals, and people who are motivated by rewards. I am definitely a "reward" kind of gal!! For example if need to do the dishes, I often find myself saying, OK, get them done, and you get 20 minutes of DISsing. Dirty toilet? No problemo! Clean it, and you get 1 hour of DISsing. See a pattern here?? :confused3:lmao:

Do you mean which program? If you go to my first post there are links to all of the installments. Go to the one that says "The Plan." There is a link in there for Couch to 5K. :thumbsup2

An Austen fan! :cool1: I just finished the first disc of Pride and Prejudice - the one with Colin Firth. I am so loving it!

That is so funny because just yesterday I was doing the exact same thing with my laundry!! :rotfl:

Hey Carissa---Sounds like you are still trucking along with your running program. It's been cold here in Alabama ,(highs in the 40s.....NO ONE LAUGH---that is come cold stuff for us southerners!) so I have not been out to run since Sunday afternoon. *CRUD* :headache: --I feel my hips widening, as I speak!

Trying to talk my friend and co-teacher to start the same program you're doing, so we can run a 5K together at the end of April.
