My Magical Journey to Running the Half Marathon TR Link! p.107

Does your first tag have anything to do with camping and needing to use the facilities? :rolleyes1

:lmao::lmao::lmao: THat's the first time someone's asked about that.

Here's the deal... In our April, 2008 trip we did the camping at Fort Wilderness thing, and I hung out on the DIS camping board a lot. There are some seriously funny people over there! One thread was all about "alternatives" to the comfort stations. Someone had suggested a 5 gallon bucket lined with a trash bag and filled with kitty litter for the night time needs of the kids. But I was like, "NO WAY!!" If there's a bucket behind my tent, I'm using it!!"

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

So there you have the dirty secrets of the camping bunch. :lmao:

That's great!

I have been so passive, just letting this weight take over my life. I kept seeing the weight go up over the years and did nothing about it and now here I am. :sad2: I laugh when I think back on the years when I was slim and fit and how I would complain that I was fat.

You are totally right though, we are in control of our actions. Nobody is force feeding me the cinnamon rolls and pizza or tying me to the couch. I just have to get off my butt and do something about it!

Wow - I can really relate to that! That's exactly how I have been too - passive - letting the weight take over my life! No more! :woohoo:

:rotfl: I figured it related to that. We've been known to use "alternatives" when camping or even on long road trips. ;)

Any pictures added to your treadmill yet? :rolleyes1

Came to see how week 2 is going.
I know you are working out at home.
But one trick I do, is pack my bag at nite
take it along to work, so I don't go home after work
and talk myself out of not going to the YMCA.

I also went to the Dollar Store and got "star" stickers.
For everyday that I work out, I put a star on my calendar.
It is a "small" thing to do, but you wouldn't believe how happy
I am, when I put that star on the calendar.

Today is an off day from running. I did some wii boxing and strengthening exercises. I lost .5 lbs. Not much, but after my 4 lb. loss last week I'm okay with it.

Thanks for sharing two great ideas! :goodvibes

From one VA Military gal to another, just jumping in here to tell you good luck and I KNOW that you can do your race!

Can't wait to watch your progress!

Keep up the good work Carissa! Don't worry about the voices, we all get them once in awhile! Don't stress too much about switching around your days, you have to make it work for you otherwise you will resent it! Hang in there! It's so hard but SO WORTH IT!!!:goodvibes

Thanks Diane. :goodvibes It's not that switching around days is an issue. I still only had two days off between runs, which is what happens once a week anyway. I just know myself and know I always find excuses for things. :rolleyes1

You have a good memory! :rotfl: No not yet, I was actually thinking about that when I was on it today. I will get right on it! ;)

We'll be waiting. ;)

Way to go on W2D2! You know I had (and still have) conversations with myself on runs. I did it during the C25K, and I do it during runs when I am just not feeling motivated and want to stop. It is such a mind game. Our bodies are able to do more than our minds will let them sometimes, and we have to get over that.

Looks like the boys had fun with the snow! We got some here too, very little snow, enough to do some sledding down steep hills, but a pretty thick layer of ice. It was half an inch on the driveways so we were all out there chipping away at it with metal shovels. I am still sore from it in my arms. I considered it crosstraining for sure! :)

It helps to know that others struggle too! :goodvibes

We got a lot of ice/sleet here as well. That was on top of the snow. I need to go to the library today so hoping the roads are in better shape.

~ W2D3 ~

I almost talked myself out of doing my run today. My excuse was my workout clothes were in the wash. I only have two pairs of shorts/pants for working out. I can't wear regular shorts as they're just not long enough. Not only do they always ride up on my inner thighs, but there's chafing involved. Not good. So, I have longer shorts and capris style for running. I thought about holding off until later in the day when the laundry was done, but I knew I would never get to the workout if I did that. So, I wore a pair of long pajama bottoms and got to work.

I have to be honest here. I'm really not enjoying my workouts right now. The reason why I always stuck to walking in the past is because it was the one thing I loved to do and would stick with. However, I haven't had the luxury of being able to go outside for my walks since early last year and I really miss it. Walking on the treadmill doesn't do much for my spirit either, but at least it's not hard work on top of that. You know?

To be clear, I am nowhere close to quitting. I'm just trying to be honest about how I'm feeling so in case others are struggling they know they're not alone. I know I can do this. I know it's a mental thing right now. I think if I were running outside I would feel differently about it all.

I made it through the workout today. Sadly, I didn't even feel the euphoria from completing week 2. I was just glad it was over. :rolleyes1

I face a decision right now and I would really like some input from others who have done the program before. I've had some suggest I should go for week 3 and just slow down my speed. But, I'm already only doing 4.0 for my runs. I tried going at 3.8 today, but it just doesn't feel natural going so slowly. I really don't feel like I'm running/jogging at all and it feels better (although more work) to go a bit faster.

My feeling right now is that with the mental state I'm in, I think it would be better to repeat week two and hopefully get to the point where it doesn't feel quite so hard before I try to move on to week three, which involves running for 3 minutes at a time. That's twice the time I'm currently doing.

What do you all think?

My totals for today:

Speed: 3.0 --> 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.4 for brisk walks, 3.3 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.79 miles

Good job getting on the treadmill! You'll have good days and bad days. I wouldn't slow down anymore. You're right 4.0 for your jogs is already fairly slow. As you've noticed if you go too slow it's actually easier to walk. If you feel like you aren't ready for week 3 then try week 2 again. Good luck. This is all a learning process that is different for everyone:goodvibes

I think the important thing is to keep doing something. Sometimes we all get hung up on the details, how fast, how long, which technique or whatever. Keep moving is the most important part and if there is a way that speaks to you more than another, embrace that.

Repeating week 2 sounds like a good plan to me :thumbsup2

I can't wait to hear all about your training as you move along. I signed up for my first 1/2 marathon yesterday as well. (The Wine and Dine in October).

I went through the C25K program last year, and really found as I went through that it's the mental stuff that was hardest to get through. Especially in the early days I'd have to set myself goals as I ran. I did all my running outdoors, so I'd make myself "deals". If I could get to the next stop sign, I'd let myself stop. When I got there, I'd set a new goal further down the road. Before I knew it I actually had found a point I didn't have to do that anymore, and my body would just feel right while running. It was a wonderful feeling. It just took awhile before my mind realized my body could run. :rotfl:

I agree with Dismagiclover - if you don't think you're ready for week 3 stick to week 2. Otherwise you might end up psyching yourself out and quitting...remember your excitement you had starting out and think how good you're going to look in you cute Disney running outfit! ;)

Carissa, I am a die-hard treadmill fan. I always seem to go right to the treadmill every single day I hit the gym (if I am not outside walking, which in CA you can do almost every day). I rarely hit the elliptical BUT have done it allot and really do love it and feel like I get a great w/o.

ANYWAY, how about slowing down the speed to 3.5 BUT instead you UP your INCLINE. I will do that often. Sheesh, that can be an intense w/o climbing THAT hill!!!

If I am going to have an INCLINE day, I will do my w/u for 5 minutes and then start s l o w l y upping my speed and hit the incline button as well. Every few minutes I up the incline until I cannot stand it. Mind you keeping the speed at 3.5-4.0! If I am feeling really good, the speed keeps going up with the incline.

Do you know there are more days in my week, Carissa, that I hate working out BUT it is the RESULTS I love!!!!! ::yes::

Oh and as far as w/o clothes go, Car, I wear all crap. ::yes::
I buy my w/o shorts in the MENS Dept at Target or Wal-Mart...those shorts by RUSSELL and JERZEES!!! :thumbsup2 I buy myself a MENS small, I love them, nice and roomy and CHEAP. :goodvibes I have like 4 pairs of black that I have bought over the years when they are on sale!!! They hold up well. :thumbsup2

Let me tell you, I live here in the beautiful flashy, pricey OC and the ladies at my complex here at our gym wear such lovely, pricey $$$$$ w/o clothes....NOT KAR!!!

Hi Carissa :wave2:

keep up the good work...I love your internal arguments :rotfl:

And I love your new PTR logo in your siggie...too cute and motivating...so when you are here on the boards you will be like "oh yes Mr. Treadmill I'll see you later today"...;)

Also forgot to mention...are you still thinking CSR? You know I stayed there last March...let me know if you have any questions...

I have also been doing the jackknife exercise since my belly is my biggest problem area. I'm amazed how sore I am with just the few reps they have you do. It's either really effective, or I'm just really out of shape!

:rotfl2: Amy...that is why I steer clear of the jack-knife exercise....

J~
