Took my cat for his feline distemper shot yesterday. He got the shot and a clean bill of health, albeit a bit chubby. Today he's been doing nothing but sleeping. He did make it to the litter box one time, but that's it. He hasn't eaten or drank anything (unheard of with this cat, he LOVES to eat).

Is it a reaction from the shot? I don't recall this happening before when he had shots. I feel bad for the little guy.:(

I have had my babies sleep all afternoon after shots but it never seemed to make them quit eating. I think I would call your vet just to be safe.

It could be a reaction. How old is he?

I agree, give your vet a call, especially if it doesn't clear up by tomorrow.

My vet is always good about warning me of possible side effects and for some shots, being lethargic for 24 hours or so after a shot is normal. I would give the vet a call just to be safe :)

Calling the vet is always a good idea, but just to let you know, my new kitten now 4 1/2 mos. old has reacted that way after his last 2 distemper shots. The day after he slept almost the whole day ( and he is an extremely active kitten hence his nickname Crazy). He didn't eat or drink until the evening. I was concerned at first as my old cat never reacted this way.

When my male cat, Mork, was a baby and had his first distemper shot he had the exact same reaction as yours. I was absolutely frantic and called the vet at 10 that night and they said it was a reaction some cats have to the shot. He's 4 years old now and he still gets kind of lethargic for a day after he has the distemper shot. His sister, Mindy, has no such reaction.

I would call the vet for your peace of mind, though. It never hurts to be too careful with your fur baby!

I sent you a PM......my dog is allergic to Rabies vaccine. It is also possible to be allergic to distemper. If you think he is not acting right, I would get vet attention as soon as possible. Better safe than sorry.

My computer crashed right after I posted this, so I didn't get to respond to all of you until now. Thankfully, my furry was back to normal the next day. The shot just must have kicked his butt.:(

I used to have a cat that would react that way after the FeLV vaccine. We stopped giving it to her since she was indoors only. She always tolerated the distemper fine.

I'm glad to hear the update. :)

Glad to hear that he was doing well the next day :)

Be sure you mention this to your vet. When it's time for a booster, he'll prob suggest he give half at a time. Or he may only give half total. Or he may not give it with so many different things mixed in at one time. Sometimes the reaction is worse the next time.
