Milk is a big weakness for me. Since I can't have any on Atkins, I've been lazy about buying it for the kids. Will this hurt them? They are eating what we eat, many more veggies than before. I bought them a bread made w/organic wheat flour instead of bad, evil white bread.

Do you think I should give them vitamins/calcuim to make up for the milk? Should I just buy them some milk and get over it?

BTW, "they" are girls, 8 and 6. Victoria and Veronica.

I'd call the pediatrition and ask.

According to Atkins the idea that milk is (or should be) the primary source of calcium in the diet isn't true. Plent of veggies and nuts and seeds have calcium, too.

I've noticed I have been buying less junk for my kids, too. That makes me feel good. I always felt guilty handing them cookies and candy because I was eating cookies and candy!

Beside what Atkins thinks about milk/kids there have been studies showing that milk for kids isn't all it is cracked up to be.

My kids drank some milk when younger...but all three get migraines...so we never over did the dairy...and now they are three very happy healthy adults. They were also very good eaters, meat, veggies etc. Now they sometimes get in junk food ruts...but they see how they feel when they eat it, and go back to eating better.

The girls will thank you for teaching them the way to eat great food and to maintain their girlish figures...lol, and then they won't be in the predicament you and I are, trying to lose the extra pounds as adults. Seems to be way to many overweight young people these days.

Funny thing is...hubby can eat out...have a couple of drinks and still lose weight...and I am still in induction.

Good luck to you!

I don't think you should worry about it. There are a growing number of people who avoid dairy, period. Cows milk is meant for their babies, not us (but I do love my cheese and a glass of milk with some chocolate cake or cookies!) The dairy companies want us to believe that we can't live without it, but as another person said, there are plenty of veggies that are a good source of calcium! :)

my pediatrician said the same exact thing when my daughter decided she didnt like milk at age 2 (now 10 & very healthy). he said even cows stop feeding their young milk after a certain point. He asked if she liked other dairy products such as ice cream & cheese & felt that she would get enough calcium from her everyday foods. do your kids like the taste of tums? they could always eat the fruit flavoured tums as a calcium suppliment if you are worried.
