My kidless Hawaii trip report!!

I have to start by saying that I cannot believe this wonderful cruise has come and gone so quickly!! I remember hearing the rumors that DCL was going to have a Hawaiian cruise leaving from my backyard. For those that don’t know, my Dh passed away just over 3 ½ years ago and I have been raising our kids (who are now 9, 7 and 4) all on my own. To say I have needed a vacation is a gross understatement! I booked this cruise without even asking my in-laws if they’d watch the kids knowing in the back of my mind that they would say yes. They have been wanting me to take some time for me but I’m sure they were not thinking 15 nights!! My in-laws are great and of course they said yes. My original plan was to go on my own if no one could join me. Of course going alone means I will have to pay close to the price of 2 people. So I asked my good friend Sarah if she’d like to join me on this cruise if she could get help with her 3 kids and if her DH would okay it! Things fell into place and we were very excited for April 29th to get here!

Sarah’s Dh arrived at my house around 12:30 and Sarah was a mess!! Eyes all swollen and nose running from the tears she had been crying. Her kids are the same ages as mine and she was sad to be leaving them. I, on the other hand, gave my kids a big kiss and hug and said I’ll call them soon and email often. I then sprinted to the car…like I said, I was desperate for a vacation!! I new my kids were in good hands with grandma and grandpa. As I get to the car, I realize Sarah’s Dh is still loading the car…I guess that happens when you have to organize 10 pieces of luggage, 7 of them being mine. In my defense, most of my bags were duffle bags so that they could collapse and be put into the larger luggage and 2 of them had FE gifts, candy for the candy exchange and Secert Mickey stuff inside.

It just takes us about 40 minutes to get to the port, Sarah continuing to cry along the way. LOL We pull up to the port at about 2 and there is no one there. Sarah cries a few more tears and her Dh says if she doesn’t get on the ship, he will be going in her place! Finally we head towards check in and breeze right through since most everyone had boarded already. We had about 30 people in front of us waiting to board which moved quickly. Thanks goodness, since the alcohol in my carry on was heavy!!

When we board, we go immediately to Cadillac Lounge so that I can say thank you to the concierge host Tawanda. He was our host on the April 8 cruise and he told me he would try and get me a brunch and high tea reservation for this cruise even though we were not concierge since I was unable to book them online. He emailed me Saturday night and said he was able to get them so I went to thank him. He then invited us in to have a drink. I cannot say enough nice things about Tawanda. Truly one of the nicest men I have ever met! We hung out there for a little bit and Pierre showed up. He is head of Food and Beverage and I had gotten to know him a few weeks prior. We would always run into him around the ship and my dd was so taken back each time he would say her name. I think she would wonder how he knew her name. LOL Another very sweet guy!

We left the lounge around 3 to head towards the Promenade Lounge to pick up our wonderful lanyards that DISers Eric and Jason so kindly made for everyone. We then went to our room, 7108, to finally unload our heavy carry ons. Our room was aft and I thought in a great location. So easy to run up to deck 9 to grab a drink (or ice to make skinny margaritas in the room!!)

As we head down to the muster drill, we see Salomie, our server from last Nov, and ask if we got her again this time just like we requested. We were ecstatic to find our that yes, she and Jorge would be our servers for the next 15 nights. I cannot say enough good words about these two….LOVE them! As we line up for the muster drill, it is very apparent that we are amongst the youngest adults on the cruise! The muster drill was quick and painless and after we head to the spa to check out the rainforest room. I knew they only had limited tickets for the duration of the cruise so I wanted to see if it was something we would use. I can’t find the spa paper with the price but I know that I thought it was a little too much seeing that we weren’t sure how often we would use it. So we opted to use day passes if we decided to use it (which in the end, we never used it!) We turned in our ticket for the raffle and headed up to deck 10 for the sail away party.

We actually stood a distance back from the Goofy pool because the only space left near the Goofy pool was in the shade and we wanted to stand in the sun. The breeze was a little cool. We could still see the jumbo tron. CMs handed out big plastic mickey hands with the sail date so that we could wave goodbye to everyone as we set sail. Sarah was now in better spirits and we gave each other a huge hug as reality set in that we were going on a 15 night cruise to Hawaii!!!!

Dinner tonight was in Parrot Cay. The longest cruise I have done is the 7 nighter so it was funny to see all the letters for the rotation on our Key To The World Card! We were sat at table 54, just the 2 of us. Geffrey, the head server, came by a couple times asking us if we wanted to join another table but we opted to stay where we were. There were quite a few tables open, definitely not a packed dining room. I guess this is a good time to tell everyone that I will have no pictures of food at all! LOL I’ll try to remember the nights that I had something fantastic. Overall, I was happy about the food. My experience is that it is the desserts that could have some improvement. It was so fun to see Salomie and Jorge again. We looked forward to seeing them every night! It was also fun having Bonieface (a server we have had twice before) on the same rotation. He would come by each night and see I we needed anything. Another fantastic Disney employee.

After dinner, we headed back to the room to finish unpacking and to decorate our door. We had to ask for more hangers but overall, I felt we had enough room for everything. The duffle bags were a great idea as they folded up nicely in my large piece of luggage and then everything slid underneath the bed. At about 8:15, we head to the Walt Disney Theatre to see the show “Let The Magic Begin.” To my surprise, there was plenty of seating still available, even towards the front. The show was fine and they had some Tahati performers doing some Hawaiian dances. It was nice to watch for a few minutes but Hawaiian dances sometimes seem to drag on and I was hoping that this wasn’t going to be the case all week. I’m sure some enjoy it more than I do! After the show, we just walk around until just before 9:45 when we made our way to Wavebands, our home almost every night of the cruise. We were beyond excited to see SpeakerBox back on the Wonder! We saw them last November and they are an awesome, very talented band. Adam, the electric guitarist, isn’t bad to look at either! They were not on my April 8 cruise so we were very happy to see them on this cruise. We hung out in Wavebands until midnight when we decided we better go to sleep since we had spa appts in the morning. Sarah had also taken some bonine because the ship was rocking and she was feeling sleepy. As I do on every cruise, I opened the balcony door and we fell asleep listening to the beautiful sounds of the Pacific Ocean. Of course before going to bed, we put out our room service request for coffee to be delivered to the room in the morning!

As you may have noticed, I have not posted any pics yet! That is because I haven’t taken any yet and did not take any until day 3. I have to say it was quite nice not lugging the camera with me since I do it quite a bit when I have the kids with me! One pic I wish I would have taken was the awesome watermelon carvings they had in the atrium that listed all of our ports of call. That was pretty cool looking!

I'm in...can't wait to hear more about the cruise!

Day 2 - At Sea

I was bummed when I woke up and checked the wave phone for the time and it read 5:30!!! I am normally an early riser as it is but I was on vacation hoping I could get some extra sleep. As this trip report goes on, you’ll see that wasn’t the case at all! When I couldn’t fall back asleep, I wrapped myself up in a blanket and went outside on the balcony to read a book. Sarah, on the other hand, sleeps like a log! We asked for coffee to be delivered between 8 and 8:30. A bit of advice…if you don’t want them coming until closer to 8:30, choose the 8:30 to 9 timeslot. Room service was incredibly prompt! Every morning they were there within a minute or two of the start of the timeslot. Sometimes I thought they were outside our door looking at their watches just waiting. LOL Sarah and I brought our own creamers, French Vanilla and Chocolate Butter Toffee, and kept them in the cooler/fridge and they kept cool all trip long. We enjoyed our coffee and some fruit on the balcony, wrapped up in our blankets. The fruit mixture you get through room service was great…pineapple, green apples, mango, green melon and kiwi. Coffee and fruit became a ritual for us almost every morning.

Sarah and I both had spa appts at 9:30. I got a hot stone massage and Sarah got a Swedish Massage. I had the hot stone massage last Nov and thought it was great. It was good this time too but man, those stones were HHHHOOOOTTTTTTT this time. I kind of just sucked it up since I knew they would start to cool down soon. It wasn’t until I got back to my room later that I realized they had burned my skin a little bit. Nothing serious though and I would still get another hot stone massage again. Sarah enjoyed her Swedish Massage as well. I already had a Swedish Massage booked for later in the cruise and I added a facial as well as an ionethermie treatment. Sarah added an ionethermie treatment too in addition to a hot stone massage she already had booked. This was a vacation about relaxing and we were going to do just that!

One thing we were bummed to miss today was the Art of Entertaining Demonstration. Salomie, our server, did most if not all of the cooking demonstrations all cruise long. Today was Sesame Crusted Tuna with Cilantro Salad. Unfortunately our spa appts got in the way.

After showering from the spa, we went to BBB for lunch. Had a nice lunch there and then headed to Studio Sea for the DVC presentation. I have been wanting to purchase DVC for awhile now but wanted to learn all about it first. We sadly did not win the raffle for OBC but I did make an appt to talk about DVC with Nick for the next day. We then headed back to the room to rest and get ready for formal night. During this time, Sarah puts on one of the Twilight movies that plays over and over again all cruise long. I am not a big scifi person and am one of few it seems that haven’t been sucked into the Twilight mania. While the love story part was fine, humans turning into wolves not so much. LOL Sarah’s plan to pull me into the mania did not succeed.

Not having the kids with me really relieved a lot of stress that I normally have on a cruise. One, I did not have to color coordinate my clothes with anyone! Secondly, we did not need to rush down to the atrium to get in line for pics. We were truly on vacation with not a care in the world! Dinner tonight was in Tritons. We had fun visiting with our servers and we started getting to know those sitting in the tables around us. Thanks to Bonieface on our my previous cruise, we had some fantastic spicy shrimp delivered to our table tonight and almost every night after. So Yummy! We had nice visits from Tawanda and Pierre, who always seemed to make sure we had everything we needed.

After dinner, we went and changed out of our clothes and then went to look around the shops. Tonight’s show was Toy Story and for me it is a been there, done that 2 times already and that was enough! LOL We just hung out and then headed to Wavebands at 9:45 to listen to SpeakerBox. Again, awesome band! At 10:15, we head to the Walt Disney Theatre to see Mike Super perform. Apparently he has done many DCL cruises but this is the first time we had seen him. He was very good and quite entertaining. After his show, we headed back to our room as my early start to the day and Sarah’s bonine popping had caught up to us. The ocean was still rocking and rolling. Luckily it doesn’t bother me at all and Sarah was taking Bonine as a preventative measure. We placed our Room Service order for coffee on the door and fell asleep once again listening to the beautiful sounds of the ocean……that is until midnight when we were woken up by loud blows of the horn! They continued to blast the horn every 10 minutes or so for about an hour. Turns out is was for safety reasons since we were sailing through some thick fog. Luckily this was the only night they blew the horns so late!

Following along with your adventure:goodvibes We're thinking of booking the Oct. Hawaii cruise while we're onboard the Magic next month.

I love my kid more than anything but 2 weeks kid free sailing to Hawaii sounds heavenly!

Really enjoying your trip report! :)

Welcome back! I'm so happy for you that you finally got some time all to yourself!

Subbing-
Wanted to book this cruise, but had something medical show up in March so I probably wouldn't have been able to make it.

Looking forward to the rest of the TR!

Day 3 - At Sea

I forgot to mention that we set our clocks back for the first time last night. I’m sure everyone was thinking “Great! Another hour of sleep!” Not the case for me. I wake up and look at the wave phone and see it is 5:30! Why can’t I just stay asleep like a normal person?? Too lazy to walk to the balcony, I just prop myself up in bed and read my book. I jump in the shower around 7:30 and when coffee arrives at precisely 8:30, Sleeping Beauty gets up and we have coffee out on the balcony. No fruit this morning because we have to save room for the fantastic brunch we are about to have in Palo at 10:30.

Brunch was just as wonderful as it always is! I’m salivating just thinking about the grape and gorgonzola pizza. The walnut and blue cheese bread is too die for as well. Much to our surprise, our server gave us 2 complimentary mimosas each instead of one! We must have polished off the first one fast! LOL Overly stuffed, we waddle on out of Palo and head back to the room. We laid on our beds and read and ended up falling asleep and taking a nap. We had delivered some of our FEs over the last few days but we took some time before dinner today to deliver the rest of them. We participated in 2 groups and had about 44 rooms to deliver to. It was a lot of fun to deliver them and it was fun to look at everyone’s door décor! Some doors have given me some inspiration for future cruises!

Dinner tonight was at Tritons again. We have gotten to know our neighboring tables pretty well by now and so dinner time became a lot of fun joking around with everyone.

I had a 7:30 DVC appt with Nick. We went over all my options and talked with him for almost 2 hours (not just about DVC!) I asked to sleep on it and made an appt to see him again at 4pm the next day. We left Nick and headed to Wavebands to listen to SpeakerBox once again! The show in the theatre tonight was the Comedy and Mystery of Guy Bavli. Due to the DVC appt, we missed the show. Following SpeakerBox was Match Your Mate which is always fun to watch. Our resident DISers Eric and Jason were among the couples playing. They also had Gene, an older guy who was enjoying alcoholic beverages all night and was a hoot to watch answer the questions. I have seen Match Your Mate before and I thought the questions this cruise were pretty tame compared to the one I saw last Nov. SpeakerBox then came back on and once they were done performing, we danced for a little bit to DJ Justin and then headed back to our room. Coffee order placed and then off to sleep to the sweet sounds of the Pacific.

Although we never made it there, they opened up the Kids Lab tonight from 11 - 11:30 for the adults to go in and make Flubber. We had planned on going in and doing this but we ended up staying in Wavebands since we were having so much fun!

Day 4 - At Sea

We gained another hour last night but as I am sure you have guessed, I did not sleep in once again! I believe I was up around 6 today. We had a lazy morning of having coffee, showering and reading out on the balcony. We then headed to BBB for lunch. If you are going to eat here on sea days, it is best to be among the first at the door at 12 or eat a later lunch. It was cool outside so many didn’t want to eat out there. I can’t remember exactly what we ate but I do know that I always found something I liked while at BBB. After eating, we walked around handing out the candy for the candy swap.

At 2:45, we had our first official DCL tasting…tequila and margaritas!! Woohoo! Not only was it my first ever tasting, it would be the first time I have ever done a shot! I am definitely more of a red wine drinker. Jesus was the CM in charge and he was a lot of fun to listen to. I learned some new things about tequila and learned that a shot of Petron Silver goes down easily! LOL All the other shots were way too strong for me. The margaritas we sampled were very good as well. This was fun and it had a pretty big turnout! Here are the first official pics of the cruise!

Now that I had a good buzz going, it was time to meet with Nick and talk about DVC! Long story short, I became a DVC member! After, we made it to Diversions at 5 to play 80’s music Name That Tune. We had a lot of fun playing these trivia games but we royally sucked at them! LOL They would play literally a split second piece of the song and we would look at each other with blank stares while people all around were celebrating the fact that they knew the song. When it was all over, we held our heads up high and headed to dinner at Animators Palate. One of my favorite things to eat on the ship is served this night…mushroom risotto! Yummy! This was also the night that Bonieface introduced us to the BBC…Baileys, Banana and Colada Mix. SO GOOD!!

The show in the theatre tonight was Who Wants to be a Mouseketeer? I had to sign my final DVC papers at 8 so we never made it to the show. After we just walked around until it was time for SpeakerBox!! Listened to them until 10:30 and then decided we were exhausted so we headed to the room. We placed our coffee order and then we both read for a little bit and then drifted off to sleep listening to those sweet sounds of the Pacific!

Loving your trip report.:thumbsup2

Welcome Home! We purchased DVC while on the cruise for Christmas (2010). You are going to love it!

Welcome Home!

We need DVC details! :) Where did you buy?

I bought at Animal Kingdom! I went back and forth bewteen there and Aulani but in the end figured I would be at WDW more than Aulani. I am so proud of myself as this is my first big girl purchase done all on my own since Dh died. I felt like all the DVC guides did a great job at explaining everything.

I know I will love it!

Congrats! AKV is my home resort as well. I love DVC and don't regret the purchase for a second. Just something about waking up to a bunch of giraffes and zebras! :)

Day 5 - At Sea

Such a bummer…I woke up early again today! I was up around 5:30. I walked out to the balcony to find that it wasn’t as cold outside as it had been. Did some more reading, had coffee at out normal time and then went to BBB for breakfast. During breakfast we saw a very rare, unexpected sight….THE SUN!!!! Woohoo! It was shining bright and felt fantastic! We immediately went and changed into our swim suits and headed up to deck 10 to stake our spots for the day. We liked being right up from the drink station. I can’t tell you how great the sun felt. It would get really hot and then all of a sudden some clouds would come over you to cool you off just long enough before the sun was shining brightly on you again. To me this is tropical weather that I love. It just reminded me that Hawaii was very near! We were so bummed that we could only lay out until 1:30 because we had high tea scheduled at 3pm. We went back to the room, showered and changed and then headed to what will probably be our very last high tea on DCL!

I was a little disappointed that they did not have my lemon verbena tea. I can’t remember exactly what I ended up ordering but that longer it steeped, the more minty it became which I did not care for. We did enjoy all the finder foods, especially the warm, yummy scones with the clotted cream. Yummy! After tea, we headed back to our room real quick and saw this beautiful sight! You know Hawaii is close when you see this!

The end of the rainbow was right in front of our balcony. It was so cool to see one so close! As you can see, the sun was short lived and gone by the time we got out of high tea.

We then made our way over to Studio Sea to play The Fued followed by Name That Disney Tune in the Promenade Lounge. We started noticing that the same people showed up at all the trivia shows and it was always the same groups of people that won all of them. Good thing is we knew we weren’t very good but had a good time anyway!

After dinner, we went and sat near the DVC desk on deck 4 and just people watched. It was a great place to see little kids run randomly into the characters. The smiles on their faces were priceless. It didn’t make me wish my kids were there at that moment but it did make me very excited about all the great interaction they will have with the characters on the Panama Canal cruise in Dec! We then went to the Walt Disney Theatre to watch the Comedy and Magic of Mike Super. He was very funny and very talented. The theatre was fuller than the first night but still not even close to being at capacity. As usual, we headed to Wavebands at 9:45 to listen to SpeakerBox. 80’s music trivia followed SpeakerBox which again we were not very good at. We then spent the next few hours dancing to Rock ‘n’ Country and then to SpeakerBox. We finally decided to call it a night around 1am since we were just hours away from arriving in Hawaii!!!

I'm thrilled to see you have started your trip report. Been waiting to see how your adventure went. I was getting off the ship as you got on. We had the pleasure of having Tawanda take care of us again. He was a prince as always.
Looking forward to reading the rest.:flower3:
