My kidless Hawaii trip report!!

Just wanted to say congrats on the DVC. You wont regret it. I am so happy about our purchase in 2008. We too own at AKV. It is a great resort and maybe you can get a club level room. I could not agree with you more about Speakerbox, I thought they were great as well. Over all I had no complaints about this cruise excpet one. I wish we could have overnighted in Honolulu. You could do an amazing Bar crawl there in Wakiki.

Congrats! AKV is my home resort as well. I love DVC and don't regret the purchase for a second. Just something about waking up to a bunch of giraffes and zebras! :)

Jill in CO

I also love my DVC! All my points are at VGC and I have not one regret.
I'm enjoying your TR :)

I bought at Animal Kingdom! I went back and forth bewteen there and Aulani but in the end figured I would be at WDW more than Aulani. I am so proud of myself as this is my first big girl purchase done all on my own since Dh died. I felt like all the DVC guides did a great job at explaining everything.

I know I will love it!

Congrats on your DVC purchase you must be so proud of yourself making this purchase!!
Your trip report is excellent so far and I can't wait to read more!!!

I agree that overnighting in Honolulu would have been fun but if I were Bar crawling, I'm not sure I would have made it back to the ship!! :rotfl:

The second half of this cruise we went to bed after 3 most nights. Luckily we only had to find our way up to deck 7 from Wavebands and not across a city. :rotfl2:

Point well taken. Again I could not agree more.

For those wanting to use the internet, yes it is slow but not as slow as I was expecting. I ended up purchasing the 500 min package for $150 that my friend and I split. This ended up being a great way to keep up with what was going on at home with the kids. My MIL would send me almost daily updates and when the kids wanted to talk to me, they would send me an email via grandma. I really missed seeing my oldest play his baseball games while I was gone. His coach always does an email game recap so I was happy to be able to read those. We checked our email every night but still ended up having a little less than 100 min left over. Oh well.

Speaking of talking with my kids…we got a call from Tawanda on Tuesday asking if we’d talked to our kids yet or not. He knew my middle child had tubes put in his ears the week prior and that he was going in for a follow up appt on Tuesday. We told him that we had talked via email. That’s when he told us to meet him at Guest Services and he let us make a phone call home to the kids! Like I said before, seriously one of the nicest men I have ever met! My MIL was still at the doctor’s with my youngest 2 but I was able to talk to my oldest. Sarah got to talk to all of her kids and she didn’t shed one tear! She was definitely in vacation mode now!

I also forgot to mention that we went to the gym on Tues and Wed in the morning. Neither of us work out at home but we figured with all the food we were eating, we might as well go in since our plans of walking deck 4 often didn’t pan out due to it being windy and cool. I had never done the elliptical before but I actually really enjoyed it. Can’t be the view either! We only were on the machines for 30 minutes but it felt good!

Day 6 - Hilo, Hawaii!!

Once again, I was up bright and early. I sat on the balcony reading for awhile, the big island within sight. At around 8, I made a call home to talk with my MIL and dd since the boys were at school. It became hard to talk because of a helicopter flying so low, circling the ship as we were making our way into port. We didn’t know it at the time but the helicopter had dropped 5000 orchids into the water welcoming the Wonder (and DCL for that matter) to Hawaii for the first time. There were media helicopters at all of the ports of Hawaii. I can’t remember which island but one of the media helicopters actually sent their photos to Shutters and they had those pics for purchase.

After showered, dressed and phone calls made, we headed up to BBB to eat some breakfast before our 9:45 meet up for our DCL excursion. BBB was packed! The sun wasn’t shining yet and many people opted to eat inside. Luckily our server Jorge was working and he helped us find a table that we were able to share with a couple. It was nice chatting with them. That’s one of the things I like about cruises…you get to meet so many wonderful people. We finish eating and then head back to our room just as the Wonder is getting tied up at port. At this point it is starting to rain!!! I believe they said that Hilo is the rainiest (or one of) city of all the islands. Even though it was raining, it was warm and humid outside. Far cry from the coolness we felt for most of our sea days.

Zip lining was so much fun! I was a little nervous at first but after I zipped the first course, I was hooked! What an absolute freeing experience. I believe we had 7 zip courses and one draw bridge to walk over. Between courses we stopped and picked water apples off a tree. They were delicious! We also were introduced to some sleepy grass. I can’t remember the actual name but it is a weed that grows all over Hawaii. You touch one area of it and the rest of it closes up to protect itself. Yes I am easily entertained! I plan on looking to see if I can get some here at home and put it in a pot. My kids would love it! The last zip course is actually a side by side course where you race someone. Sarah and I raced each other and we bet the loser would buy dinner at Tritons that night. LOL I won but I think that has to do with the fact that I weigh a little more than her. More weight is to your advantage when zip lining, at least on the last course. We loved this excursion and would do it again, this time with camera in hand. The only thing that was a downer on this excursion was the fact that we had a 17ish year old in our group that just had to be first at every course. He would position himself further up the trail even if the guides were talking to the group as a whole just so that he would be first. It drove Sarah and I crazy because there were quite a few older people in our group and he really should have let them go first. It also scared me because my 9 year old is this way now and I shutter at the thought of him being that way even when he gets older and should know better.

The shuttle bus got us back to the port around 2:30. We had a very important errand to run…we had to get to WalMart! There was a free shuttle bus that ran from the port to WalMart every 30 minutes. We got to WalMart and was able to stock up on chocolate covered macadamias and a bunch of souvenirs for the kids, including monkey banks made out of coconuts, a hula girl outfit for dd and some key chains for the boys. We also picked up some cheap tennis shoes for our Rainforest/Waterfall hike the next day. We only had our water shoes and workout tennis shoes with us and we didn’t want to ruin them. Sarah also stocked up on some cans of flavored green tea that she has a hard time finding back at home. We caught one of the last shuttles back to the port from WalMart. I believe the last shuttle left WalMart at 4:45 even though all aboard wasn‘t until 7:30. We had quite a few bags, heavy bags, and when we got back to the port, there was a long line to get back on the ship!! Our arms were killing us. I saw my room steward Dalton and thought about asking him to carry my bags to my room but decided that wouldn’t be right. LOL In fact, a lot of the cruise staff got time off in each port to relax and adventure out. Everyone we talked to had such a good time. I’m so glad they got some time off to enjoy themselves since they work so darn hard! We finally get back onboard, dropped our bags off at our room and then headed to dinner…good thing because we were starving. Our excursion only included a bag of chips and since we needed to go to WalMart, we didn’t have lunch.

Dinner tonight was in Tritons. I can’t remember if it was tonight or the coming Monday night in Tritons, but one of these nights we had some popcorn shrimp that was downright delicious!! One of the best things I ate all week. Starting tonight we had some special menus made just for Hawaii. Not everything on the menu was Hawaiian inspired but I always found something I liked. I also really liked how the menus were brand new, never been used before. They were so pretty. Sarah and I toasted to our first day in Hawaii and I ended up having a few glasses of wine during dinner. After dinner, we head back to the room to rest since we were not interested in seeing The Avengers. Our plan was to head down to Wavebands as usual to listen to Speakerbox. However, my body had something else in mind. We laid on our beds and started reading our Kindles to pass the time when all of a sudden my eyes are EXTREMELY heavy. That’s when I knew I would never make it to Wavebands at 9:45. The early mornings up, the late nights out, the excitement of the day and 3 glasses of wine got the best of me and I was sound asleep by 9pm! I think Sarah followed my lead and was asleep shortly after I was.

Loving this latest installment. I will have to try zip lining at some time in my life. This trip I won't be able to because of my little boy. Glad you hear your first time experience was so great!

You had mentioned being on your verandah every morning on the sea days. Was it very cold? Did you need a blanket or jacket to relax and enjoy it?

Thank you for posting about your Wal-Mart excursion! Will have to check that out. I love the ABC stores in Hawaii too. Lots of fun stuff to take home.

This was such a Wonderful cruise and glad to see you enjoyed it as much as I did. The popcorn shrimp was great wasnt it and it was on the Hilo night. :thumbsup2

Our table loved that popcorn shrimp so much that our server and head server made sure we got big orders of it for the rest of the cruise. That stuff was soooooooooooooooo good.

We had asked our stateroom host to bring us 4 additonal blankets because we slept with the doors opened and it was a litte cool without the blankets. In the morning I would wrap one blanket around me while I read on the balcony and I was comfortable. That's saying a lot from somene who gets cold easily.

Following along! The cruise sounds amazing (someday I hope to go to Hawaii).

Day 7 - Nawiliwili, Maui

Since I was in bed so early the night before, I’d have been surprised if I slept in. I believe I was up around 6 again and as usual, I went on the balcony to read for a little bit. Coffee and fruit came around 7 and then we showered and got ready. We had to meet at 8:45 in Wavebands for our Rainforest/Waterfall hike excursion! Once they were ready for our group, we were escorted down off the ship and then boarded into a shuttle van. We had a really nice guide named Dylan who was very knowledgeable about everything we came across during our hike. We did ask Dylan if he suggested wearing tennis shoes (the ones we bought for cheap at WalMart) or our water shoes and he said if we were comfortable walking in our water shoes, he suggested we wear those so that we didn’t need to change our shoes each time we went to a waterfall. In the end, our water shoes worked just fine! They also provided backpacks and ponchos just in case things got muddy or it started to rain. So we just transferred everything from our backpacks into theirs (including our camera!!)

The hiking conditions were not ideal. It was very muddy from the all the rain they received the day before, despite the fact that we were hiking in beautiful sunny weather. Our water shoes had enough traction but when you are walking in mud, there really isn’t any traction! So you had to be very careful when walking, especially when going up or down a steep hill. One lady in our group took a pretty bad fall and landed right on her tail bone. She got up and said she was okay but I am sure she was probably feeling it the next day! During our hike, Dylan would come across bushes of berries or twigs that could be eaten. I love eating from nature!! LOL He pulled a piece of one plant and squished it between his fingers and it smelled just like root beer. This was not edible though. We also came across more of the sleepy grass (weed) in which I had to share with the rest of the group. They were as easily entertained as I was! We ended up going to I believe 4 different waterfalls. It was so cool being so close to the waterfalls! You were given time to swim around at each waterfall but the water was too cold for me to go more than knee deep. At one of the waterfalls, we sat down to eat the lunch provided…a turkey sandwich, a cookie, chips and water. Dylan also had water to refill our water bottles any time we wanted throughout the hike. We ate as we watched some daredevils (not from our group) jump from the cliff down into the waterfall pool. Dylan said it was about 14 ft deep in a certain spot but he wouldn’t suggest people jumping the cliff right there. It would be really tough to get help down there should someone need it. This guy was going in straight as a twig and when he came out, I asked if his feet touched the ground and he said yes. That sent shivers down my spine…he’s lucky he didn’t break anything. He continued to jump off a couple more times, each time I found myself holding my breath!

When we got to the final waterfall, Dylan told us that if we felt adventurous, we could follow him down to the waterfall or we could just stay up top and look at it from there. All of us chose to go down but one older lady. Sarah encouraged her to go down with the rest of the group and she finally agreed. You had to go down a very steep hill holding onto a rope to get to the waterfall. Once down the hill you had to traverse a lot of rocks to get to the waterfall. Sarah and I made it to the waterfall and I told Sarah that we should try walking knee deep around the outside to make it behind the waterfall. There are a ton of different shaped rocks in muddy, murky water. I take a wrong step and fall, smashing my knee against a rock and as much as I didn’t want to get wet, I landed right in the water!!! I guess the plus side was that the throbbing in my knee kept me from feeling the sting of the cold water. I get up and sit on a big rock and see a small puncture wound that looks like I hit a rock on a pointy corner. It is barely bleeding but the throbbing hurts so bad. I just kept thinking how the heck I am a going to make it back up that steep hill!!! Dylan offered an ice pack but I said I was okay. I rested while the others swam and luckily the throbbing subsided before it was time to go back up the steep hill. As Sarah and I make it towards the hill, we notice a lady from our group had fallen and was barely hanging on from the side of the steep hill!! Wouldn’t you know it was the same lady that didn’t want to go down in the first place! Sarah felt horrible. Dylan and the guys in our group were able to get her up and then help her up the hill. She was covered in mud from head to toe! Once up, Dylan made the decision to walk us back on a main paved road instead of through the trails. Despite all the falls, it really was a fun excursion and accidents happen. I would definitely do it again!

We did get some pics but not even halfway through the hike, it said my card was full even though there were only about 30 pics on it! I was bummed that I woud need to buy one in the gift shop onboard. Sarah did have her phone so she did get some more pics but here are some I took.

We got back to the ship around 3:30 I believe?? We ended up going back to the room to rest and make calls home to talk to our kids. I also popped some Tylenol knowing that I was going to feel my knee really soon. Dinner tonight was in Animators Palate. Bonieface had come over to ask how our day was and when I told him I took a fall, he immediately went and got me an ice pack. So sweet! I propped my leg up and iced it throughout dinner. We sat and chatted all through dinner with all the servers finding out what everyone did that day. I think we may have been the last to leave the restaurant that night. After dinner, we decided to get off the ship to walk across to Whole Foods in search of coconut syrup. All aboard was at 10:30 or 11 (can’t remember!) As we got there I saw that there was a Longs next to Whole Foods which I became very excited about! I knew I could buy a SD card cheaper there than on the ship. We also found coconut syrup there and some postcards. By the way, if you like coconut, you’ll love the coconut syrup! Yummy!! We also took a walk to Whole Foods and bought some honeycomb dipped in chocolate. Also yummy! The walk was only about 10 minutes at the most and nothing beats a nighttime walk in Hawaii. I love the warmth in the breeze. So tropical and so wonderful.

We got back to the ship by 9:30 but my sore knee was not going to allow me to go to Wavebands and dance tonight. So we headed back to the room, did a little more reading and headed to bed just after we watched us pull away from beautiful Maui!!

Is your knee ok now? How was the other woman who fell? Sounds like a good hike. I can imagine the mud adding a level of caution to it though. Did your guide mention anything about Leptospirosis in the water? I remember hearing that the fresh water streams, ponds, etc. were contaminated with it on the islands. Maybe it's not an issue now?

Is that a pineapple plant in one of the photos? Would you recommend this hike? It sounds quite strenuous but the foliage and the waterfall look beautiful.

No I don't recall him mentioning Leptospirosis. He did advise against drinking the water. I don't know who would drink it though. It didn't look like it would taste good! LOL

My knee is still sore even after 2 weeks and even has a little bruising still but nothing like it was the day it happened. The other woman made it back to the ship fine but I am sure she was probably hurting the next day.

Yes that was a pineapple plant! I would definitely recommend the hike. Only the one steep hill is what I would call strenuous and he gave us the option of not going down it. The mud did make some of it a challenge but we just made sure to watch where we were walking. Before the hike he asked if anyone wanted a walking stick to take with them. No one in our group used one but maybe that woud help a little?? The foilage and waterfall are definitely worth the hike!
