My IPOD Died

I used my Ipod last Thursday morning. It worked great. That afternoon, I decided to go for a walk. I turned on my IPOD and it looked odd. All of my cover artwork was gone and only some of the songs showed up. Although it would look like a song was playing, there was no music. So, I started up ITunes to reload it. ITunes detected the IPOD but said it was corrupt and would need to go back to the original software. I clicked on okay. Instead of having it come back on ITunes, a big red X appeared on my IPOD screen. I went to Apple/IPOD support and tried their suggestions for resetting it. Nothing happened.

Today, I took it to the Apple store. They said my harddrive died. To make it worse, my warranty was up 3 weeks ago. Just my luck! So, I could have paid $150 to have the old one sent in. There would be a limited 3 month warranty on the refurbished IPOD. Or, I could upgrade to a new one with my memory than my old one. If I upgraded they would give me a 10 percent recycle credit and the new IPOD would have the full year warranty. To upgrade, it cost me $238. So, I am sitting her loading my new IPOD. I'm glad I will have it back, but I just don't get it.

DD has had her IPOD for three years. She is not that careful with it and it is fine. I treated mine like it was made of glass and it died. I think I don't live right.

Ouch! Sorry about your iPod I have to admit that I'm one that has put my iPods through the ringer! I am SO terrible to them. It's not intentional, it's just that I take it everywhere.

But in my case, my DD is the one with the bad luck and I can seem to do anything to mine and it keeps coming back. I've dropped it numerous times, accidentally soaked it, had it loose in the bottom of my purse more times than I ever should and it just keeps working.

DD drops her once and it died

I had one close call with mine when it appears to be "giving up the ghost" but it turned out that it was just too cold outside for it when I took my walk. Warmed it up and it came right back.

But look at the bright side - you now have a new and better iPod!

I feel your pain. I was so careful with mine and it also stopped working for no reason. My DH has the luck of your DD. His has dropped in the pool, fallen on the floor, been left on the patio for days, etc and works like a charm. Go figure.

Did it come in contact with a magnet? I ask because that's what happened to my first iPod. I kept it in my purse and we figured that it must have come in contact with the magnet closure in the purse. Mine was still under warranty, so it was replaced with a new one.

Don't feel bad, they are build to do that. Apple is a big believer in planned obsolescence

Some ipods use flash based memory, and are more "shock proof". The Ipod Classic uses small hard drives, small hard drives equal moving parts which are more susceptible to damage.

That's exactly what they told me at the store. In fact, they suggested I go with the little flat version (don't remember what it's called) because it is solid state and less fragile than the classic with the hard drive. Unfortunately, the solid state version does not have enough memory for me. I have almost 5000 songs on my Ipod plus several television show episodes and a movie. Yes...I am addicted.

It was the Ipod Classic 80G. My DD gave it to me for Christmas a year ago.

I'm guessing that you didn't buy the Procare. That's a shame.

We have about 5 ipods in the house. I still can't believe mine is still going strong.

Hard drives, especially itty bitty ones, have variable lifespans. The warranty is very likely carefully crafted to ensure it excludes a great percentage of the failure period for the hard drive (because there isn't much else in the device that can fail with anywhere near as much frequency).

There is now a 32 gig version of the ipod touch, I know that is not nearly the capacity of the classics. What I do is add and delete to kinda change the contents around, there is no way I would fit my entire library on my 8 gig iphone. Just hook up to computer every few days and mix it up.

Mine died recently too. I have had 2 die on me and I hardly use it. Thankfully with this one I am still under the warranty, so we'll see what happens. My DD uses hers almost 24/7 and no problems. Not fair!

My Photo still works fine as well. It actually looked like it was at death's door (didn't get the sad iPod icon, but I continually got the folder w/ the exclamation point and no amount of fiddling or restoring could fix it, etc.) Tossed it in the junk drawer for about 2 years and then, one day when I couldn't find my nano, I dug it back out and plugged it in on a whim. After a delay of several minutes while the battery charged enough to make it functional at all, it sprang to life, iTunes detected it, and it immediately began restoring. It's worked perfectly ever since. I renamed it Lazarus.

I know, totally OT. This was probably more in response to the "planned obsolescence" comment than anything else.
