Just wanted to share because I has no idea but my insurance company just gave me 500 dollars to pay for food spoilage due to a power outage. I had no idea until a friend told me about I called this morning and after a 5 minute conversation they money was into account.

Did you have to pay your deductable? I never heard that before.

No nothing they said it was covered under my personal property policy. It is through USAA so I not sure if all companies do it or just certain ones. I had never heard of it either .

They will recoup their money with higher rates for you and or dropping you. We decided after our power outage that is was NOT worth it. Plus it was lying. We did not have $500.00 in our refrigerator/freezer combined.

I am pretty sure they are not going to drop us especially since this is our first claim ever and we have had this policy for years. Oh and I did not lie I told him flat out I had no where near that amount of food in my fridge and said 500 is the rate they pay. I am not sure why the judgmental tone I was just passing the info along.

When our adjuster was here for damage from Hurricane Sandy, he told us the same thing....500 flat rate.

Not all companies are the same. USAA happens to be great in those regards.

I said I would have been lying. I specifically stated that is why we chose not. And in my state people have been dropped for a lot less.

Good for you! Just to let others know, this would be policy dependent. I know when we had a power outage, our insurance wouldn't pay for food spoilage. Or maybe it's we had to pay our deductible before it would kick in. :confused3 Anyway, check your (general) policy.

We have had a few bad storms around here in the last 2 years that caused many of us to be without power from 8-15 days. There were a lot of rumors that the power company, FEMA, and our insurance companies would pay for food lost. None are/were true. Some insurance companies do offer an addition to a standard homeowners policy that will cover lost food but you are paying for it. OP, perhaps you are in a region that this coverage is more common than it is here.

How long was your power out?

I'm just wondering because there was an issue with a major electrical transformer that had three (small) towns in my area including mine without power for 5-6 hours. But that wasn't enough time for anything to spoil. If your power was out for days I could see insurance companies doing this though becasue that only happens with major storms.

At least in my area a few hours without power is common in winter... (snow laden tree branch falls on power line or someone crashes into the pole and brings it down)

When I was talking to the adjuster he said it was standard for USAA. I honestly have never read our policy and was really surprised at the info he gave me on on regards to what my perks our policy has.

From 2am Sunday morning until about an hour ago. It is so cold I really thought everything would be ok but the fridge was the only warm thing in the house when we got home.

Yeah, I would never claim that unless I was turning a claim for other stuff associated with the outtage. Insurance companies do not like to be nickel and dimed. $500 would fall under that heading.

I think you are mistaking a thoughtful warning with someone passing judgement. We are simply trying to warn you. Last person I warned about something similar lost her coverage. She listened to her lawyer who actually took part of what she recovered from her insurance company, so she had a compounded loss.

We have USAA and they have paid for food spoilage a couple of times with no problems.

We tend to have our insurance have a high deductible and self insure for minor losses.

I would feel uncomfortable taking $500 when I knew my loss was less than that amount.

To each his own.

You know any other insurance company I would agree with you in regards to this but USAA is a not your typical insurance company. For instance we also have our auto insurance through them and in the past 3 years we have had major hail damage to both vehicles, my husband was in an accident that was his fault, and I got a speeding ticket and our premiums have not gone up nor have when be dropped. I feel confident that my rates will not go up nor will I be dropped over this and it sucks to hear that this has happened to other people by their insurance companies.

Yup. I have the same thing. Keep in mind that the insurance company has the right not to renew your policy if you file claims.

I filed exactly one claim on my insurance, which was denied, and when my policy was up for renewal the company elected not to renew my policy.

So, be choosy when you choose to file a claim. I hope you are right with USAA. I don't know anyone who has lost automobile coverage due to claims but do know homeowners. Sadly, insurance is like any other company and in it to make money.

I have state farm and they also have the policy of paying for spoiled food. When our power was out for 3 days they actually called their policy holders and let them know that this was available.
