My idea of a good time..Anyone else enjoy doing this?

Rob, those are great pictures, thank you for posting them.

We don't have bluebirds, and "our" hawk is a Cooper Hawk. He/she's been coming to my backyard beginning as a young'un, when catching food was very very chancy.

Some very special moments are when mother birds, especially robins, bring the fledlings to our pond to teach them to bathe. Yes, I'm dorky about them, too.

Yes, I think I still have remnants from every trip we have taken: room keys, ME books, confirmations, etc. I think I have more drawers for my Disney stuff then I do for regular clothes in my dresser. I keep telling myself that I need to buy a file thingy for all of this stuff, but I never buy one.

I also pull up Caskbill's planner and plan out all sorts of scenarios of way to use our points. When I call MS to book, I try to have a plan B or C as well.

Wow. Those are some great looking birds and some great pictures. Did you take them all? They are wonderful. I do love the birds but I have 2 cats and don't want any 'natural accidents'. Love them! Thank you for posting them Rob.

Thanks for indulging me. Yep they are all shots taken in my back yard except for the hawk which was a short way from my home. Mary Beth saw it while we were in the car and we did a u-turn and stopped on the side of the road to get some pretty poor shots of it.

Bobbiwoz... I think this is a Cooper's Hawk or more likely a Red Shoulder Hawk. Just a freak of nature.

We live near a small mountain (3500 ft.) and have birders up there constantly keeping track of the bird migrations. DW follows their blogs regularly. Geeks we are.

We have a pair of Cardinals living in our yard. Cardinals are perching birds and can't really cling to the side of anything like the tree clinging birds. However, the male has learned how to do it and it is soooo precious to see him get some suet and hop back up to the feeder bar and give it to the female. You understand then that birds have feelings for each other too.

I thought of this thread today, the birds. We have a screened porch out back and occasionally a bird flies in and can't find their way out. Today it was a humming bird! Poor little guy. I thought it was one of my fake birds that I have in a wreath that had fallen out. I went to pick him up and he flew away and just kept going towards the ceiling. Eventually he fell onto a chair. I picked him up and brought him into the house. I gave him some sugar water and just let him rest. When he began to stir I sat with him on the back steps and up up and away he flew! I should have gotten a picture, but he didn't look so hot just lying there. Count me in as a fan of the wildlife too.:goodvibes

Actually, he was bigger than I thought a hummingbird would be just lying there (I usually see them in flight). Bluish color, long beak. Probably 2.5" long (the body, not including the beak). Hummingbird?:confused3

That is sooo cool. I have always wanted to get a hummer to land on my finger, but they are just too skiddish. I am in awe... that you got to hold him/her... Thank you for taking care of it. From my part of the woods humming birds fly 3500 miles into Central America (wintering) and then fly back again to their former home. How incredible is that?

I am a bird geek.....

It was my pleasure taking care of the bird. And yes, that distance they fly is incredible.

So, do you think it was a hummer?

I am not sure... 2.5" long (excluding beak) is pretty big for a hummer, but pretty short for most other birds. Did you see it flying... did it seem to fly like a bee? It could have been a nuthatch... Which is still likely more that 2.5 inches.

I don't know where you live, but in the east we almost only witness the Ruby Throated Hummer, which is mostly green and the males have a red throat.

Regardless of the species... glad you were there to save it. :)

Oops, just remembered I forgot to follow up on the hummer mystery! Yes, he was more bumble bee like. My husband said he thought it was a hummer too. Dang, I wish I had taken a pic of that beauty.
