I think my husband has found the key to motivating me!

OK--for the first time in about 8 years (since I had kids), I've decided that I should start taking better care of myself and I should lose some weight. So, I've been working out here at home every day for a couple of weeks...I've lost about 8 pounds so far.

Anyway, my husband is delighted that I'm giving a rip about myself now. (Like he's Richard Gere or something! He could stand to lose some weight too!)

Well, our girls have a hula-hoop. My hubby has bet me that I can't hula-hoop for 5 minutes straight.

SO, IF I can hula-hoop for 5 minutes straight by August 15th, we get a 7-day WDW vacation next June!

AND, IF I can hula-hoop for 15 minutes straight by August 15th, we get the 4 day-3night WDW CRUISE!!! It would be our first ever!

Can I just say...that dang hula-hoop is great exercise! I'm thinking about doing a 24-hour marathon and maybe we can move to Orlando!!! :-)

Current time: about 30 seconds...so I've got a long way to go before 8/15!

That is too funny..and soooo cool!! Just practice a whole lot...move those hips a'la Stitch as Elvis and you'll have it down in no time!! I wish hubby would make that bet with me ;)

Hello firecracker,

Please tell me what you did. I have tried everything and can't stay motivated enough to keep it going. I've got Pilates, Ab Swing, gymbar by bodyflex, some powered drink (all off those infomercials) I bought a stepper thing (kinda like riding a bike standing up). I've even considered a new weight lose patch they have out. I gave up the pills due to that baseball player dying.
I guess I want to see results to quickly and when I feel I'm not getting anywhere I give up. Yesterday I started excersising again (pilaities, gymbar anf Ab Swing), today I got in about 20 minutes of pilaties thanks to the phone and I'm afraid I will give up again.

So what I'm asking is what technique you used and how long before you seen results? Did you have to change you eating habits? and if you have kids how do you do that and still cook there normal foods?

I'm just glad to see a normal personthat really lost weight then those people on t.v. because after a week I start to convince myself they're actors and grab some Drake's apple pies.
I just need to lose about 10- 15 pounds and flatten my tummy (I have an 11 month old).

That is so funny. Good luck meeting your goal. With that kind of motivation, I am sure you can do it.

Keep Practicing!!!

Melinda

Dsnycrzy,

Losing weight can be a challenge! I'm a Fitness Instructor and am constantly battling my weight. I find even with teaching classes, walking outside is the best exercise (shhh, don't tell my clients that :p ). Try walking outside now that the weather is nice and slowly increase your time/distance.

Good luck!

Just wanted you guys to know in case you didn't, I just found a board here on the DIS supporting people who are trying to loose weight. It is called the WISH Board.

My husband made a bet with me that if I lose 40 pounds we can fly to Florida in January. We made this bet in January of this year. I got to the 40 pounds mark last month. And, I've already booked our airfare. I have tried ever diet imaginable. Body For Life is what worked for me. It is a book you read by the same title.

Disnee Dad Says....................................Can't help you with the hoola hoop, practice, practice, practice.

I always had the problem of gaining weight, and for years I tried to gain pounds. And I did, a few pounds a year. When I got to the right wieght, I still added on pounds. Untill I hit 193 when I should be 165.

I read many books, and many plans seem to work, but I came up with my own plan.

50 grams of fat a day max. That is the only rule.

Cereal and skim milk for BK. Maybe a nice salad for dinner. That means I get a Big Mac for lunch! But no fries.

Add walking to this to burn calories, and it can't fail.

You eat what you want, but if you want that great chocolate dessert, you bank some fat grams 2 or 3 days before you get it.

And 50 a day will lead you to more fruit and vegatables, which we all need more of anyways!

It's no quick fix, the first time I did this I lost 10 pounds in about 3 months, but I got to eat what I wanted, within reason.

Maybe it's just me, but I like the fact that there is only one rule!

Lol-hope the hula hooping goes well for you!

DH & I made a similar bet last year. He said if I was motivated enough to get into shape & participate in the WDW in 2004, go right ahead & do it. Then plan a vacation around the marathon. He thought I would work out for a week or 2 & forget about it.

Not me, not when it comes to WDW! LOL!

I've been training since my birthday in October & have had some major setbacks (kidney dialysis, diagnosed with a rare auto immune disease) but I have not let that stop me. I am registered to partipate in the 1/2 marathon and we booked at AKl conicerge & BWI concierge as my "treat" for doing this for myself!

I think DH is eating his words every morning that I come in from the gym or from running. But he says he would pay double for the healthy lifestyle I have adopted.

The WISH board here is great, I don't post there as much as I should but there are some highly motivated DIS'ers losing lots of weight, adopting healthier lifestyles & they have lots of support & encouragement for those who are interested. Check out their board at:

This might sound crazy but I actually won a hula-hoop contest at our block party a few years ago (yes I'm over 30). The key is in your leg placement. If you don't place your legs far enough apart but not too far you can't hula hoop for very long. I went from about 30 seconds to being able to hula as long as I wanted just by moving my legs SO give it a try!!! Best of luck

I'll let you in on a little secret. I work in a preschool and the director came in with new hula-hoops. I have never been able to hula-hoop. Well, these hula-hoops have water inside them to help you. I was able to hula-hoop with these. The four year olds can hula-hoop forever. They have started putting two hula hoops together they got so good. It seems the water helps them stay up and continue to go around without much talent. I think she bought them at Toys R us. I won't tell your husband, Anything for a Disney Trip. I hope you win the criuse too. Good luck, Gina

Dsnycrzy--You sound just like me. I can't exercise at home, no matter what tapes or products I try. I currently go to Jazzercise, which I love. You might also look into joining a gym with classes, or like the other poster said, walk outside.

I've also read all the diet books, but not been able to stick to a diet. The one that worked was Ediets(at www.ediets.com), which does cost to join, but it's cheap compared to Weight Watchers. Also after you've belonged for a couple of months and lost some weight, you can sign up to be a mentor and get the membership for free. They have several different diet plans you can choose from: low-fat, low carb, Zone, Atkins. They customized meal plans for you, and include recipes.

You can make the whole thing much less complicated, but I have to have more structure. To simplify: Move more, eat less. Cut out the junk and eat lots of fruits and veggies. Drink tons of water!!

Good luck
