My heart is so broken.......

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. I know how hard it is. We lost our 20 year old cat a few months ago and I still have my moments. It is losing a member of your family. It does get a bit easier with time and at least you can remember all the happy memories you have with her. My prayers are with you :grouphug:

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. You will be in my thoughts.

Now, more than ever, I can understand your pain. One of our cats was diagnosed with cancer and I anticipate facing your situation in the near future.
When faced with this, it is surprising how deep your emotions can run. While we have loving relationships with human family and friends, our bonds with our pets is very special too. We love them and they love us. People who say that animals cannot love, don't know what they're talking about. I look at my Max and I can see the love for me in his eyes. I cannot imagine the pain we will face losing him.

In trying to brace myself for the inevitable, I've spoken with many I know who've been through it. Here is the advice I've been given: Allow yourself adequate time to grief. Surround yourself with the happy memories of your beloved pet. After a reasonable period of time (but not too long) embrace the love of a new pet. This has been suggested by everyone I know who's lost a pet! They say the new pet does NOT replace the lost pet. Rather, it fills the void in your heart. It replaces sadness with happiness. They all said that letting love grow again, making new memories with another pet was the best thing for their grief. Of course, everyone is different and maybe you will not want to adopt a new pet, or maybe you would want to wait a little longer. I just thought I'd pass on advice from others I've spoken to.

There are many websites that deal with pet loss.

It's got to be hard to lose almost 16years of love. :grouphug: My heart goes out to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs are special creatures and they are a HUGE part of our lives.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is such an adjustment to make when a person loses a member of the family/friend or both. :grouphug:

What a hard thing to have to do. But you made the right decision. And eventually, your heart will heal, though how long it will take may not be known.

Send Me a Puppy(adapted from the poem, "To All Parents" by Edgar Guest)
I will lend to you for a while a puppy, God said.
For you to love while he lives, and mourn when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three.
But will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,
you'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught below I want this puppy to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowds life's land I have chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain?
Nor hate me when I come to take my puppy home again?

And my heart replied, "My Lord, Thy Will Be Done."
For all the joys this puppy brings, the risk of grief I'll run.

We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may.
And for the happiness that we've known, forever grateful stay.

But should you call him back much sooner than we planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

If by our love we've managed your wishes to achieve,
in memory of his sweet sweet love, please help us while we grieve.

When our cherished puppy departs this world of strife,
Please send yet another needing soul for us to love all his life.

I am so sorry to hear this. :sad2: And, I really do feel your pain. Many hugs coming your way.

I'm so sorry! It's a tough decision--we've had to put 2 cats to sleep and lost another one due to old age. One of our dogs is getting up there in years--not sure how old since he was an adult when we got him, but about 13-14yo. I hate this part about having animals, but once the pain lifts a little I know that I'm so blessed to have had the animals in my life. Too bad this part has to hurt so damn much.

I am so sorry! They become such a big part of our families. Your beloved dog is at the Rainbow Bridge playing with lots of other Furabies. We had to have our beloved Westie Snowy put to sleep last month and some days it is hard. But I think of her whole and happy and playing with all the other doggies. Take care and think of the good times you had.

So sorry to hear that, disfanRN. It is always so hard when we need to say goodbye to our wonderful pets. Know well she is there at the bridge, with so many others. Her memory and so many good memories will be with you forever.........

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm so sorry. We put our cat to sleep almost 3 years ago at about the same age as yours, my mom and I were with her. My mom passed away last September, I was just thinking last night that I hope they are together again now.

This morning, we had to put our sweet furbaby to sleep. She was 15 years and 7 months old. I know I am so lucky to have had such a long time with her, but my selfish heart wanted more.
I am so broken hearted, and the pain and thought of missing her is almost unbearable. I know it will get better in time and that it was the right decision, but I can't believe how bad it hurts.
She was a wonderful dog, and I loved every minute we had with her, I feel like a part of me is gone and I will never be the same.

So sorry for your loss. You are not selfish for wanting more time--it really hurts to make that decision.

I'm so sorry for you. Last October, I had to put my 16-year-old mutt to sleep. For 15 years, we took a three mile walk together almost every night. We walked thousands of miles together and were truly the best of friends.

The last year of his life, we had to stop walking together because he just couldn't make it. I stopped walking myself because I just couldn't bring myself to leave him at home while I walked. His health continued to deteriorate and I knew I had to put him to sleep.

I held him when they gave him the shot and whispered in his ear "Honey, you're going on a long walk today and it will be wonderful. You have fun and someday I'll get to walk with you again.

I still miss him so much! However, I'm finally getting to where I can think of him and not be so sad. Yesterday, I even smiled when I saw some puppies and remembered how cute my little dog was when we adopted each other.

I wish I could say something to make you feel better, but I know from experience, it just takes time. My heart goes out to you!
