Luckily, so far they've only been the ones DH has brought in to back up my data on. 
Twice now, he's brought in a spare drive for us to use as a backup until we can get a DVDRom drive.
Twice now, they've died.
Luckily, the main drives are still alive. (knock on wood)
Now if only that DVDRom drive will get here. Backing up 50 gig onto CD is not my idea of a good time...
