My hair blow dryer just exploded

I was drying my hair and my blow dryer literally blew up. I heard a horrible explosion noise and unplugged it right away. Lucky for me, the plastic cover kept the *shrapnel* contained!!!! When I shake the blow dryer now, it sounds like a baby rattle (with lots of pieces inside). The motor actually blew into a million pieces. The case started to open and if it had completely, I may not be here to write this since it was pointed at my head. Very, very scary.

Has this ever happened to anyone else. I am still shaken.

Could have been a collection of dust, etc. that ignited from the heating element or sparks from the motor.

Is it old?, new? Check for product recalls.

Not actually explode, but I did have one suddenly shoot fire out the back end and burn my wrist once. After that, it also sounded like a baby rattle, so it may have been a similar situation.

Very frightening. Could have been much worse, considering the fact that you use this appliance so close to your head/face!

Never happened to me or anyone I know of...but certainly very scary!! I would absolutely check for recalls and call the manufacturer in case this is a problem with this particular model. Maybe the recall begins with you on this one!

I only ever buy hair dryers from my hairdresser as my hair is quite thick and I need one that is powerful and will endure what I put it through!

Yikes! Something like that happened to my mom a few years ago. I know the back piece blew off of hers, but luckily everything else stayed inside.

I called the place where it was purchased, and they only have an address for the company and a website (which doesn't work). I bought the blow dryer from a salon/product store (not my salon, though), so I figured it would be a decent and reliable make. I may have been mistaken!

Yes, actually I have.

I was in high school and was drying my hair sitting on the bed before going out one weekend. Sparks shot out of the end and fan intakes some of the sparks bounced under the bed and caught the bed on fire. My dad put it out before anything else could catch so no major damage was done - except that the cheesecloth that covers the bottom of the box springs was no longer there - it kinda went up in a great big woosh when my dad lifted the mattress/box springs off of the bed frame.

Made me kinda paranoid about hair dryers, curling irons, hotrollers, etc. in the bedroom. Now I will only use them in the bathroom - where everything is tile.

I see some Google-ing in your future :teeth: .

I had it happen at the hair dressers once! I felt so bad, thought it was my hair that caused the problem. I have lots and lots of fine hair, takes 40 mins to dry at home, so I don't do it, natural all the way for me. But at the hair dressers, I get it dried and flattened, but this time about 15 mins into the dry, smoke, hissing and a dead dryer, augh! She said is was near ready to go and that her colour supplier had recently given her a new blower, so it was not a problem, left a better tip then normal that time.

What company made it? I would like to know just in case I may have one that brand. (Mine is made by Rusk.)

What interests me most is: How does your hair look like ? :rotfl:
In Germany it is a very common joke to ask people with very frizzy hair 'Did your blow drier explode?' ;)

But it happened to me once too: Lot's of strange noises, sparks flying out of the housing, but then fortunately the fuse cut in. It was scary!!! Fortunately I no longer need one: Less hair, but more face to wash :teeth:

I finally talked a manager in the company and they are going to replace it at no charge. I am happy for that, but would have preferred NOT to have had the experience!!!!

Well, Ive had black hair like stuff explode out of mine..Lol..Im glad your safe! :grouphug:

That certainly would be scary!! I keep thinking my coffee pot is going to explode because it makes weird popping noises when brewing. Glad you're OK. :)
