My Grad Got A Job

My son finished up his last exam today, graduates Sunday. With this lousy economy and our state's unemployment rate higher than the national average I was worried about his prospects. But last week he got an interview, then a callback and finally an offer. He will take a couple of days to move his things, get reorganized then start a new career

A lot of colleges are finishing up this week and next. Keep your fingers crossed that companies have faith in the future and their years of hard work pays off.

While I'm very happy for you and your son, it's hard to read a post like this after being unemployed for nearly 2 years. After sending out countless resumes, I still haven't had one interview. I put in my four years of college so I do have the education also.

My spouse just lost his job due to government budget cuts and it is nearly impossible to find another position. I hope your son works his butt off to keep the job as companies have no sense of loyalty anymore.

It could just be the industry or the location. My company is actually having a hard time filling positions (mostly because we have so many we just reached 100 new people hired this year and still need more). I was talking to my mentor at my job yesterday because I may have found an opportunity that could bring the company more business and grow the program I'm working on, but I have to check with our managers to see if they want to pursue it because we don't want to get the work and then not be able get staff for it.

Then there are other industries that are really struggling and even other locations of my company are having harder times getting enough work for everyone.

To the OP - Congrats for your son. I graduated 2 years ago and that feeling you get with your first real paycheck is great... (I had co-op jobs that paid decent and typical college jobs but it was still nothing compared to my first real job after college)

We were THRILLED when our DS got his teaching job just after his 2008 graduation. The very next year our parish began closing high schools like crazy. His wife who graduated a year later hasn't been able to find anything. After looking for two years she's given up on finding a teaching job and will be going back to school in the fall.

It's tough out there.

That's great!! In this economy, that's quite an accomplishment!

Being the budget board, if I were able to talk to your son, I'd tell him this:
- Don't start spending money now that you have a steady paycheck. Live like a college student (i.e., cheaply) so that you can quickly build your savings.
- In that line, if you get raises, just deposit that money directly into savings; if you don't see it, you won't miss it.
- Max out at least what your company matches on the 401k, or 10%. DH and I both started our 401ks when we graduated college, and we've accumulated quite a bit (and we're only in our late 30s).

I hope I don't sound too preachy, but it's always best to save up money now, when you barely have any expenses, then try to catch up later. My BIL is a milionare (at least) because while he was single he lived VERY cheaply (mostly because he was "lazy" and didn't feel like buying things). When he finally decided to stop renting, he was able to buy his house in cash (and furnish it).

My husband just finished interviewing teachers for 4 positions he has vacant at school. He got a huge number of applications for this very rural area, and quite a few of them were teachers who had been out for a couple of years and had not been able to find jobs (been substituting, etc.). He said that he feels bad having to tell many of them that the positions are filled because many, many of them were very qualified (just not enough room).

That's great!! In this economy, that's quite an accomplishment!

You don't sound preachy at all IMHO, and I've said the same thing. My daughter is also graduating and is fortunate to already have a job (in fact, she got more than one job offer). The company she chose matches your contribution according to profits (for example, the most recent quarter was a match of approximately 4 to 1!). She'll be putting every penny in that they will allow.

For the others who are struggling with job searches, you have my sympathy, and I hope things improve for you soon.

congratulations to your son! you must be very excited. what a huge weight off his and your shoulders.

in general, though, most college grads aren't the ones who are unemployed or having problems finding employment. most college grads do quite well, even in this economy. it's those without a degree or super valuable skills that are having trouble finding jobs.

Kudos for your son!
We can't find enough people to hire right now. No one learns basic trade skills and they don't want to work at an entry level job (no college) for $12-$14 an hour.
All our kids learned basic retail and had to know how to weld, pipe, electrical, plumbing, etc.
So far, we have a DR., an engineer, and an accountant but they all worked crap jobs going through school.
As I said, Kudos to your son. You did something right!

Congrats to your son and to you! I know exactly how you feel. My DS graduated in 2009 with a degree in special ed and was able to get a job right away. We know how fortunate he was. We now pray each year that he is able to keep his job. Teaching jobs are a little rocky right now.

Tech used to be mainly an Engineering school but their Business school has gained a national reputation. Their commencement speaker, Michael Duke, is CEO of the world's largest retailer (Walmart) and a Georgia tech graduate.

Congratulations! I hope my oldest son is so fortunate...He graduates one week from today with honors from a large state school. He really needs a job right away.

Another son graduated last summer and was hired by the law firm where he did his internship (not great money for a college grad, but great experience). He is going to law school this fall. He won't need a "real" job for a few more years.
