I recently stayed at the Grand California for 1 night with some friends. Since we are in Southern California we all have APs and we probably go about once a month, but for this trip we decided to be extravegent and pich in for a room at the GC which has always been a dream of mine.
When we pulled up to the hotel we were immediatly greeted by a valet attendant, but we opted to self park. We were then directed inside to the check in desk where there was no line and we were checked in and issued parking passes without incident. Our room was not ready, but we were givrn our keys and told to check in and see if it was ready periodically using any house phone. We then explored the resort. I love the pool. It's not as elaborate as some of the WDW pools, but the theme pool and the quiet pool are right next to each other, and there are plenty of lounge chairs.
After exploring the park for a few hours we headed back to the GC and were told that our room was ready and given our room number #4433. It was quite a hike from the elevators. Upon entering the room I was suprised to see how small the actual sleeping chamber is. Much of the advertised square footage in the room is takem up by a long entry hallway, that is really just wasted space. I'm not sure if all of the rooms are laid out like this, but for the rates this place charges I was expecting a bigger, more well laid out room. We four adults were a bit cramped, but never uncomfortable. I was also dissapointed to see that our view looked directly out on to the tram stop for the Micky and Friends parking lot. Our room was one of the ones over the World of Disney. I can't really complain though because it was the view that I had paid for.
The room was attractivly decorated and was very clean. I was especailly impressed witht he bathroom everything was gleaming white. It looked like we could have been the first ones to ever use it Both our luggage and the extra towels we asked for were delivered within minutes.
Another minor frustration was the CM at guest services. I went there to inquire about brunch at the Napa Rose, as it was advertised both in the room and in the elevators. After much typing on his computer he told me that it looked like they no longer served brunch. Well if they no longer serve brunch then why is it promoted in several different places? He didn't have a good answer for me.
OVerall, I'm glad I stayed at the GC, as it was something that I have always wanted to do, but I would not stay there again. I think if you are on an extended vacation and can really utilize the resort and afford the price tag then it is a good option. But for people like me who are just looking for a bed one of the offsite hotels will work just as well for a fraction of the cost. I'd be happy to answer any questions.
