I haven't posted recently due to a severe depression (I have bipolar disorder) and my best friend's wedding in another state (it was wonderful).

As some of you know (and now the rest of you), I am starting my masters degree in the fall at Penn State in Speech Language Pathology. I have been assuming I would take out student loans but last night I was contacted by a professor and told that there is a US Department of Education grant waiting for me if I want it. It will pay all tuition and a monthly stipend!

The grant specifies that I will work 2 years in the public school system for every year I accept the grant.

I will be getting specialized in augmentative and alternative communication which is my passion.

I am so excited I am in shock... school is expensive (this is like a $48,000+ gift, I am out of state) and I was about to sign for my loans.

Just wanted to share good news with everyone!

That is awesome. Congratulations. I benefited from speech and language therapy as a child and now I talk for a living!

My mother spent her career in the public schools doing speech and language path and loved it.

Best wishes to you in your education and career.

Congratulations Kate!!!

That is really awesome news!!! :cool1: Whoo hoo!!!
I can only imagine the weight off your shoulders to not have take out the loans. Way to go girl!!

Woo Hee!!!! My son graduated from PSU 5/05 & just loved it there. We are out of state & so hated having to pay the extra $$ for out of state tuition as we are 45 mins. from the PA border. What a great opportunity for you. Best of luck - go for it!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Congrats sweetie, I am so glad for you! I hope MJ gets a therapist as great as you!

Wow! Great news!!! Many congratulations to you!

Awesome. THe kids will really benefit from a therapist like you.

Wonderful news for you...and your future clients.

Now THIS is what I like my tax dollars going for! :wave2:

Congratulations!!!! :cool1: My daughter has been in speech therapy since before she turned two. I am thinking about going back for a degree in speech or occupational therapy, since my daughter is in OT for fine motor skills. Good luck in your studies. :yay:

Congratulations!!! This is wonderful news!!!

Congratulations!!!! As the mother of a bi polar son (only 10) your success is an inspiration to me...it is wonderful to hear another success story!!!

Congrats, Kate! I am an SLP and work in the preschool program for our public schools and am still paying student loans! Oh well! It is a very rewarding and wonderful profession and I hope you will love it as much as I do. I learn so much from my students and their parents as well as other professionals every day. I am actually ready to go back to school- that says a lot about how much I love my job! Try to have some fun in grad school- it's the toughest thing I've ever accomplished. Real life isn't nearly as demanding!

Ahhh...That is just so fabulous!!! You are undoubtedly a very talented Lady and they want and NEED more people like you in that field.

:grouphug: and the best of luck in your endeavors!! :goodvibes

I'm going to have to print out all these nice things you guys said for when I'm feeling discouraged. :thumbsup2 Thanks

To tmli, never lose hope that your son can achieve all he wants to in life. Continue being supportive and loving- we aren't easy children  . Being diagnosed so young makes a huge difference.
