My daughter's FIRST birthday is July 21st, and of course DH and I want to have a big birthday bash for her in our backyard, like a pool party sort of thing (of course the kiddie pool will be supervised) And since it's summer we wanted to have a Hawaiian themed party, maybe put Lilo and Stitch decorations up. BUT my friend, who had her baby a month before me, is having a Hawaiian themed party for her son! Argggh!!! Ok maybe it's not a big deal for everyone else, but it irks me. Should I go on with my planned party (plans aren't final, we're still in the beginning stages). Or should I change the theme? I thought the theme would have been so fun... Or i could have changed it to a Polynesian theme, which is similar... Any advice would be great, or what have you done for your birthday parties? I know DD is too little to even care, but it's more for our many relatives instead of the same old birthday party routine.

Well, you won't have the same visitors at each party so why not have the same theme? Maybe she can lend you some decorations. On the negative side, of all the nerve to steal your idea. Okay, I know it's petty but what kind of friend makes life harder for their friend?

A Luau Party is a tradition in Hawaii for a babies 1st birthday. It seems like a perfect theme. There are all kinds of fun decorations in Oriental Trading. Maybe you and your friend could order some things together to share at both parties. I am sure whatever theme you decide on, everyone will have a great time at the party.

I would keep the idea. And on on the plus side, you can see what works for her and what didn't, then your party can benefit from that!

Keep it. Don't let it ruin the joy of celebrating the wonderful milestone of your child's 1st birthday. I can remember knocking myself out cleaning, cooking, decorating for dd's first few birthdays. Everything had to be perfect. Now, I clean moderately, cook or buy everything and the decorations have been scaled back. Enjoy the Hawaiian theme. Everyone will love it! Don't forget to come back and let us know how it goes!!:D :D

I say keep it, but if you want to change...how about a Mexican Fiesta? Easy to buy things and makes the food fun and easy, too.

If you don't know about Oriental Trading, try their web site for themed items. Inexpensive and easy to order...I use them all the time when planning special events!

Oh, DEFINITELY keep it & I agree, you can see what worked for your friend, what was worth the trouble & what wasn't!!!

For our daughter's FIRST birthday, we picked her up from day care after work, put her in her high chair, stuck a store-bought cake on her tray, lit a candle and sang "Happy Birthday". Then we let her rip open a few gifts, then it was bedtime.
