I am a teacher in the US, which is code for modest income (very modest) and my Federal Income Tax bracket is 28%. That amount is taken out of each pay check along with state income tax, Social Security, and a portion of my health insurance (other portion paid by my school district). Nearly half my salary evaporates with these deductions before I ever see it. However, even adding property taxes ($3,000 annually), sales taxes and various hidden taxes (no idea of the amount), I don't quite hit that dreadful 75% mark mentioned for the UK nor does the average American taxpayer.
About making such a life jarring change as immigration, either for a short time or for good, and being concerned about the financial rearrangement of your life: There is a philosophy that does seem right to me--Do what you love. The money will follow. Or stated another way--If you're miserable, there's not enough money in the world to make that worthwhile.
One other bit of sage wisdom--Life is too short--or too long!--to waste any of it. Be happy.
