A little background....we bought into DVC in January and have already added on once. I used some of our "extra" points in March for my sister's Bachelorette weekend at SSR, but this was my first DVC points trip with my family.

The Cast of Characters:
Me - totally Disney obsessed - Kristie/38
Bill - my lovely husband (who thankfully likes my Disney obsession - 39
Lindsey - our 9 year old daughter
Nicholas - our 6 year old son

We were on a Royal Caribbean cruise (Freedom of the Seas) from 7/4-7/11 out of Port Canaveral and had a fantastic time. This trip to Disney was an add on to that vacation which we booked when we bought into DVC in January.

We had made the reservation for a studio at BLT/Lake View. I just couldn't use the MK view points and used all of your advice to make my room request. Before we were a moderate resort family and since buying into DVC and reading all the forum info I can, I made a "rule" for us, that when we go for 4 or less days we will stay in a studio and any longer than that a 1 BR...we'll see how that goes :)

On to the trip!!

Sunday -7/11

We arrived at the Contemporary to check in around 9am and there was no line at all for check in....AND our room was ready. We were assigned room 8432 and we were off to check it out.

I should mention that my husband has been wanting to stay at a monorail resort ever since our honeymoon and I have consistently said NO.....to expensive when moderates were just fine, so he was so excited. Our 6 year old son was just beside himself too....trains, monorails all sorts of Disney transportation thrill him!

We checked out our room and loved it! After our cabin on the cruise the studio was HUGE. DD informed me right away that I would be sleeping on the sofa bed with our DS, which I was cool with, I wanted to check out the comfy level.

OK! The view! Totally blew me away! I'll post pictures soon, but looking straight ahead off the balcony I was looking at the Contemporary/Bay Lake but leaning out the right I could see Splash Mountain (HOW FUN!). I was then delighted to realize that I could see all three other parks on the horizon! I really had not realized I could see those and I was just in an immediate happy place. Wait....since I can see Splash Mountain from my room, I think I should have been in The Laughing Place!

We then headed to Animal Kingdom!

Before going in the park we headed to Will Call to pick up our very first annual passes. I had a Give a Day Get a Day voucher and I didn't have to go into the park and then upgrade my ticket to the annual pass as I had read about, they did the upgrade all in one swoop. We then headed to Guest Services to get our Disney Reward card/load it up, then purchase our TIW card. Business done and we headed into the park...

Every day at Disney is great....but MAN was it HOT!! I mean sweat while standing in place HOT! We were undeterred! We had told the kids that since this is a short trip we wouldn't get to do everything this time, so it took a lot of ride/attraction pressure off of the whole trip. The first thing we did was move up our Yak and Yeti reservation to lunchtime.

For those of you who have not made it to Yak & Yeti yet, I really highly recommend it! Delicious! Of course Bill and I always order the same thing....mmm Steak and Shrimp! It is a yummy skirt steak wrapped around a tower of rice with 3 shrimp tempora....mmm. A few years ago I told my son that if he finished his meal he could squish my rice tower at the end of the meal and it has become the tradition for both kids.

Note: we were on the regular dining plan for this trip. At lunch I started keeping a tally of what our cash spent would have been if we didn't have dining credits, along with extra cash we spent above and beyond the dining plan. I'll report on all those stats at the end.

Off to Expedition Everest! This was Nicholas' first ride and he laughed the whole time, but he claims he didn't like it at all....he did want to ride again from the single rider line....but alas we told him he was too young for that. For the first time we went over to Rafeki's Station on the train....I think its so fun how no matter how many times you go to Disney there is always something more to see!

We cut our day at Animal Kingdom short and headed to the pool at BLT...man was it hot!

As soon as we stepped into the pool at BLT my DVC love grew. I'm not sure if it was in my head or not but as I sat there I realized that everything you all have said about DVC enabling you to stop going commando was true! The whole family LOVED the pool. I have to mention that I really was happy about the beverage refilling station. At the moderate resorts we never found ourselves back at the resort at a time that it was worth the walk over to the main house to fill our mugs....this trip they got quite a work out!

Off to Magic Kingdom!

I wanted to walk...but Nicholas and Bill dictated a trip on the monorail, and off we went! First stop...something to eat. I should mention that we typically have done the deluxe dining plan, so we have always eaten table service for lunches and dinners, so I found I had not done the right amount of prep to figure out which quick services would serve us best. We ate at Cosmic Ray's and it was OK....this was the first time on the trip that Lindsey revolted against the kids menu. She turns 10 in August and even though I think that most all the time the adults menu will be too much for her, she is definitely ready for the variety. At any rate, I have committed to studying the quick service menus before our next trip to make this a little easier to navigate..suggestions would be appreciated!

We went on only a few rides at MK that night and then went back to the room, we were all beat from the cruise, and getting up so early to watch the ship dock....so we wimped out and totally missed the EMH time at MK...bummer..but wait...I'm DVC and no longer need to be going commando..right??

More later.....day 2 was at Epcot and MK!!

Can't wait for Day 2. Thanks for the TR, they help me make it through to our next trip.

Great TR - can't wait to read more!!! I love people as DISNEYcrazy as I am that actually figure how much the DDP and TIW cards save them !!!!

Sounds like a great vacation so far :goodvibes.

Fingers crossed that you share you FOS portion (see my ticker :thumbsup2)

Your kids are funny with the rice- :rotfl: Glad you had a great 1st DVC trip- looking forward to hearing more!!

Add me to the list of those ready to hear more. It sounds like you had lots of fun. I love the idea of the kids smashing your rice.

Thanks for sharing. We just bought at BLT and haven't been yet -- cannot wait!

You sound alot like us -- Being on the monorail was what motivated us to finally take the DVC plunge. We stayed once at the Poly and always want to stay on the monrail -- but, like you, I can never justify the expense!!

We made a family decision to stay in a studio, rather than a 1BR, so that we can go more often. We'll see how that goes!!

Great report, show more pictures and sell me on wanting to stay at this resort!

Liking your trip report, especially the picture of the Splash Mountain from your room. What a view! Great family pic too - your daughter looks just like her father.

Can't wait to read more! Great picture of Splash Mountain. My kids loved it - it's their favorite ride! :goodvibes

We woke up refreshed and ready to go for Day 2! At this point I'm still leary about Quick Service meals, but I'm happy about the relaxing start to the morning with the kids eating breakfast in the room...donuts every day were a big hit!

Off to Epcot (2 monorials for the boys!)

Everytime we go to Epcot I find that I like it more than I think I will. We spend most of our time in Future World, but I long for the time that my husband and I can go stroll through the World Showcase without the kids...anyway....

Our "new" find for this trip was going to the Coke Cool Zone for the kids to try all the sodas from around the world, not only was it another scorcher of a day, so the air conditioning was welcome, the kids LOVED trying the sodas...Germany was their favorite. My kids had Disney gift cards to use and DS's first purchase was one of the giant coke bottle banks, he was thrilled!

We rode our favorite rides, Test Track, Mission Space, Soarin of course (thank you Fast Pass!), and spent plenty of time in the Seas and Land Pavillion.

DSCN0384.jpg

Call me crazy (and so many have), but I love SUPER LOVE the Living with the Land ride. It makes me so happy to see the giant vegetables and different growing systems. I have a black thumb and kill everything I try to grow, but I do love looking at these veggies. I know its a totally ridiculous ride to LOVE but the family humors me every time! Yea!!

DSCN0433.jpg

Our bellies were growling and it was time to head over to another family favorite the Biergarten. We unanimously love going here. We were seated just in time to see the show and enjoyed plate after plate of yummy treats! They even were able to duplicate the German soda from the Coke Cool Zone for the kids! During this lunch I broke the news that we wouldn't be eating here on our next trip and this did not go over so well....time to re-adjust the next trips ADR's I guess! We sat next to a very nice couple during the meal, and it made me enjoy the sitting with people you don't know tradition at this restaurant.

After our late lunch we reported immediately to a Kim Possible station for Nicholas to start the adventure. Lindsey pretended to be "too cool" to be doing the missions but she quickly got into it. We only did one mission in Norway, but it was fun as usual. I think this is a very clever thing for kids to do in the World Showcase to keep them interested in all there is to see...THANKS Disney! uhhh sorry about the picture I forgot to rotate it :(

DSCN0423.jpg

When we left Epcot the monorail was broken and instead of waiting in the mega line for the TTC we jumped on the bus to the Wilderness Lodge and happily toured the lobby and the grounds before taking the bus back to the Contemporary...what fun! While out on the boat the kids relived their adventures for us of the Pirate Cruise they did last spring break. I really never realized the lake was so huge! One of the benefits were some great views of BLT/Contemporary with the MK in the background (uh...and also the great family time on the water).

DSCN0453.jpg

I'll say it again...thank you DVC for making me feel like spending time at the pool was OK during my Disney vacation becuase did I mention it was HOT....we were off to the pool again! More good times, that waterslide sure was fun! More beverage refilling and a little more of my book read by the pool and I was ready to go for our evening adventures at MK!!

DSCN0338.jpg

For dinner we did quick service at the Contempo Cafe in the Contemporary. The food was better than I expected (I checked the menu first at www.allears.net) and I really liked the touch screen ordering system. I had the steak salad and I was really happy with it, it had goat cheese and a lot of it...me likey!

Off to Magic Kingdom we went and my kids were raring to go! When we got there we went straight to Space Mountain and it was just re-opening after a many hour shut down....only maybe a 10 minute wait to get on...yippee!!

DSCN0457.jpg

Off to Fantasyland... Soon after it was time for fireworks and the kids emphatically told us that we MUST NOT stop and watch the fireworks it would "cut into their ride time"...ha rumph....apparantly THEY have not been doing the extensive research into all things Disney and did not care that it was a totally new fireworks show erg!!!

While we were in It's A Small World I found that they have the original inspiration for all the cool vegetables in Living with the Land! See....you are always finding new things at good ol' Disney!

DSCN0510.jpg

One thing about the whole week I should mention. I'm a huge believer in Tour Guide Mike's advice but I was pleased to find that in general the crowd levels were way lower than he had predicted for this week...go us!

We got on plenty of rides then back to the monorail for one more ride for the night!

Oh one more thing before I wrap this day up. Remember Lindsey declared that she was sleeping on the bed and I was on the sleeper sofa? I found the sleeper sofa to be very very comfy!

More later.......

and yes, as requested once I'm through with Disney I'll include a brief report on Freedom of the Seas :yay: It was great as well :woohoo:

Keep it coming!!! Love the pictures of your family. My kids love donuts every morning while at Disney too. I think I have donut face pictures at many ages from trips over the years - priceless!!!

I'm with ya about Living with the Land. I love that ride too - and although this summer I have been working on my green thumb and I am getting better I am not that good with plants. My kids are happy though!

The plan for Day 3 was Hollywood Studios in the morning and Magic Kingdom at night (do you sense a theme....every day a little Magic Kingdom time is in order!)

Off to Hollywood Studios....by bus (to the horror of little Nicholas who formerlly loved the busses, but now feels that monorails should go everywhere!)

Another milestone today, Nicholas' first ride on the Tower of Terror. We learned a lesson from when our daughter was young and stopped saying the name of the ride in a silly slightly scary voice, and in fact didn't call it by its name at all. It made the line much more pleasant! Nicholas claimed to have not liked the ride, but he totally did....he was all about getting a shirt in gift shop and later in the day told a sweet older lady how SHE really needed to go to HS and ride the Tower of Terror.

We had gotten fast passes for Toy Story, but it wasn't time yet so we headed over towards the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground which the kiddos LOVE and ran into friends from home there.....its fun when you don't even realize that you have neighbors at the park and you happen to run into them! After a little visit it was time to head towards lunch at another family favorite 50's Prime Time Cafe!

Oh how we love this place. The theming is so great and the waitresses crack me up. We were seated in "Auntie" Donna's section again and she went into the schtick right away having the kids set the table, explaining the manners, etc. Our kids call this restaurant "the place where Daddy gets in trouble" because elbows on the table are usually a problem for him! BUT not this time!! It was me! After we ate we spent a lot of time chatting with Auntie Donna and she kept catching me with my elbows on the table. Sadly (no not really it was funny) the meal ended with me standing with my nose against the wall while onlookers wagged their fingers at me and said SHAME SHAME SHAME....oh how it is fun there!!

DSCN0516.jpg

DSCN0523.jpg

I should have told you about the food. I have loved everything I have ordered there, but I shall never order another thing off that menu other than the fried chicken MAN was it YUMMY with a capital YUM! Bill said his club sandwich was great and the kids were happy, but that fried chicken mmmm my mouth is watering RIGHT now!

After lunch we headed over to the Backlot Tour where my husband volunteered to help in the show. He donned his vinyl wet suit and played the comic relief part on the bow of the boat...fun times...

DSCN0536.jpg

Then off to the favorite Toy Story Mania!! I don't mind telling you that I got the high score of our family this time.....whew hew!!!

We then split up so Bill and Lindsey could go to Rockin Roller Coaster and Nicholas and I could sign up for Jedi Training Acadamy. They seemed to have changed the process for this though (I must research this before my next trip), but all slots had been filled for the whole day at that point, and Nicholas and I headed for a cool snack and a prime parade watching location.

DSCN0597.jpg

We met up with Bill and Lindsey during the parade and decided to bail on HS and hit the pool one more time....ahh sweet relief!!

After pool time we headed to our first time at Grand Floridian Cafe. The food was good and the decor lovely, I"m not sure this will be a place that we "have to get to" but I'm sure we will go back again on a future trip.

We then headed over to MK, with our only purpose being to see the Electrical Parade....which was well worth the wait.

DSCN0621.jpg

DSCN0632.jpg

We really enjoyed it right up until the time when the rain started to pour and we bailed before the parade was over....but a quick trip on the monorail sent us back to BLT and up to the TOTWL lounge to wait for the fireworks.

As if by Disney magic the rain came to an end right after 10 and the fireworks started with a small delay. I know that others have reported on how great the fireworks look from this vantage point and I totally join in with this group! Wow...I still can't get over how wide spread the fireworks show is. When you watch it from Main St USA it looks like all of the fire works are shot off from behind the castle, but that just isn't so.....totally awesome!

DSCN0780.jpg

After this we called it a night. We were only planning on a short amount of time at MK tomorrow before heading north, and we wanted to get some packing done so we could catch rope drop! More later!!
