My first solo trip to Japan - Fantasy Springs Opening Day Trip Report

So funny that you are already set up for a return! My husband and I realized that we just missed the Osaka Expo by just a bit and quickly entertained the idea of coming back next year again. So, you are not the only one!

We are lucky that flights Japan on miles are a bit more affordable (also in cash), our JAL flights were 70,000 American Airlines miles per person (economy, but JAL’s economy was very comfortable!).

I'm enjoying your trip report. Looks like we overlapped at the Hyatt House Shibuya by 1 night. :)

I was surprised at the number of Gong Cha in Japan! They really have the market cornered. We were also in Seoul and they were everywhere there too. DS is a boba addict too, so he had it twice.

We went to the Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu location in Odaiba. It was really good. Hope you get to try it again.

I see we missed a bunch of things at TeamLab Borderless. Ugh. I didn't do any research since I didn't want to spoil it. That worked well for Planets, not so well for Borderless. We missed the light show! And the tea house. What are "dizzy" and "cube" on the map?

There are so many good deals with AA points, I'm jealous! American hardly flies here (MSP), I'm basically at Delta's mercy for everything! I could fly pretty cheaply on points in economy on United if I took a quick flight to O'hare, but I get so worried about dealing with connecting flights. I keep dreaming that Delta will offer me some amazing Delta One upgrade deal but it remained like 400k points per leg :rotfl2:

That is so funny! I'm not sure I saw any other bubble tea than Gong Cha, thankfully it was good enough to satisfy my craving! Boba addicts unite :thumbsup2 I definitely need to try Gyukatsu again, I keep thinking about it! I almost missed a lot of rooms too, I looked up a map just before I left to check and realized I had only seen like half the rooms. Dizzy was like an alcove room that made it look like you were moving with everything else, the super motion-sickness inducing one! I think I missed the cube room LOL!

Dizzy at 11:40 (when I saw it I think it looked more like flying through space instead of fish)

Cube room at 17:00

6/2: Tokyo (Ginza Steak Shibuya)

This dinner was definitely the bust of my trip, not that the food was bad, it just wasn't a good experience for me. I booked it since I wanted to try A5 wagyu and it was near my hotel, maybe a six minute walk located inside the Granbell Hotel. It was raining pretty hard so I was glad it wasn't far!

It was easy to make reservations ahead of time, they only had a couple of times so I think they try to seat people around the same time. I did the following course:
[Most popular] A5 WAGYU SHIMOHURI(Marbled meat) AND AKAMI(Lean meat) STEAK COURSE

This was 11880¥ before tax and service fee, I ended up getting a lemon sour as well and the total bill ended up being $93 USD. Pretty expensive but a lot cheaper than in the US.

It was a bit awkward as I was the only person there for the first 15 or so minutes. There was a long L shaped counter with multiple grills, and it was really weird being the only one there for a while. My chef was super young, probably younger than me, maybe early 20s. His English was very minimal but he was trying his best, he was really nice but suuuuper awkward. Like nervous awkward, shaky hands, probably new to the job. All of the staff was super young, there were a lot of them in view as the kitchen was like right there tow watch from your seat, and they were all sort of running into each other not knowing what to do since it was so quiet.

This was a pretty expensive meal for Japan and it just was odd to me that they would have such young, inexperienced staff. Maybe it's always like this (it is a chain after all) or I just got an off night.

IMG_5295.jpeg

Since it is an AYCE place, they of course try to fill you up with several courses before the steak.

Starting with herb marinated red squid and beets with mandarin oranges.

IMG_5297.jpeg

This whole experience was so awkward for me I didn't really even take any notes on the appetizer courses. All were fine, nothing bad but nothing really standout.

Chilled white asparagus potage:

IMG_5298.jpeg

Caramel noisette and spanish mackerel poiret, the chef cooked the fish and asparagus in front of me and it was perfectly done.

IMG_5299.jpeg

Grilled spring vegetables and A5 Kuroge wagyu beef yakishabu with plum sauce.

IMG_5300.jpeg

Granted I ate fast and these were pretty small initial courses, all four were served within 10 minutes total :rotfl: This was supposed to be a two hour meal!

The chef showed me the four cuts of A5 wagyu that I would be served. He showed me a card of the cuts and tried to explain them to me. Either he had no clue which cut was which, or it was a translation issue, but every time he showed or gave me a cut, it was different than what he told me the first time :rotfl2:

IMG_5296.jpeg

IMG_5309.jpeg

From my understanding, the four I would get (but have no clue which was which) would be the tenderloin, aitchbone, top sirloin butt, and tri tip. After you have the four initial cuts, you can request unlimited refills, though chef's choice which cuts.

With the steak, I was also served garlic rice and miso soup. The rice was very garlicky, that's for sure!

6/2: Tokyo (Ginza Steak Shibuya cont.)

I'm going off what I think he told me the cuts were, but I really have no clue lol! They do not ask how you'd like it cooked but I think everything was about medium rare which is fine with me.

The tenderloin was first, this was delicious. I think I ate most of this. It was incredibly tender and juice and just melted. I'm guessing each of the cuts were around 6oz? Looks bigger in the picture!

Served with a pile of onions, and some garlic chips, black pepper, and soy sauce. You could add on a dipping sauce combo if you wanted to, but I did not.

IMG_5301.jpeg

I think around this point another solo diner came in, followed by a small group. So it was slightly less awkward not being totally alone.

Next was the aitchbone, this was even fattier and more juicy. It was at this point I realized I made a mistake, the four cuts was going to be way too much let alone the AYCE :rotfl: I think I managed maybe half of this cut. In my notes I wrote "literally dead after 2/4 steaks" lol.

IMG_5304.jpeg

Third cut was the top sirloin butt, which I thought was pretty similar to the aitchbone prior. I was so full at this point I think I had maybe two pieces.

IMG_5305.jpeg

Last was the trip tip. This was easily my favorite, so tender and juicy. I forgot to take the picture first so sorry it's so sad looking :hyper:

IMG_5306.jpeg

Again, I was so full I had maybe two pieces. All in all I'm not sure I even managed to eat half of the steak in total  I felt bad for the cow that was sacrificed for this meal, LOL. The A5 wagyu was just so rich, so fatty, I could not eat nearly as much as I would regular steak. I'm a big eater and this meal just took me out. It didn't help that everything was so fast (all four meats were served within 25 minutes) so I had no time to really digest.

Not really the chef's fault, I could have absolutely asked him to wait longer between grilling each cut but it was such an awkward meal that it's not like I wanted to just sit there waiting between cuts either lol.

Dessert was very welcomed as it was a nice change from fatty, salty beef. Of course my dessert stomach had room for this.

IMG_5308.jpeg

Ice cream with berries and green tea, nothing special but a nice way to end the meal. I was done just before 7:00 so overall I only used an hour of my two hours. I asked my chef how many people had more steak beyond the first four cuts but he didn't really understand me

Overall I really regretted this meal, I'm not sure if it was a total tourist trap or just a weird night. It's probably more fun with a group, the format didn't work too well for solo dining, unless you get a chef with a lot of charisma. I learned that AYCE A5 wagyu is not for me, that's for sure :rotfl: I think it's best to have as a small add on to a normal meal, not as the focus of the meal! Just too much for me!

I had to walk off the heavy meal so I wandered the streets a bit and ended up back at Family Mart. I got a little black thunder chocolate bar to try, this was good. Sort of like a crunch bar but in cookie form. I had a bite of the egg sando the next morning but the bread was so dry I didn't have more than a bite, I'll have to try a fresh one next time.

IMG_5310.jpeg

The peach ice cream balls were great, Pringles tasted just like at home, iced tea was pretty ehhh. The ice cream wafer bar was delicious and huge!

I packed up my bags, and mostly emptied my carry on so I could leave room for shopping. I planned to send my two check bags to the Disneyland Hotel the next morning, and I was switching hotels for one night the next day.

I had to get up early to ship my bags and then head to the Making of Harry Potter at 9:30, which was a ways away via multiple trains.

Overall 26k steps for the day! A much busier day than the last couple, and I was in bed by 11.

My friends saw that OLC is taking a DCL ship in 2028, so there’s a good chance we will be back then. Other than London the end of this week, D23 Expo, taking kiddo off to college, 2 Halloween Horror Nights trips, and possibly an Egypt Adventures by Disney in the Spring, I don’t have much planned🤣

I have had A5 at some Japanese restaurants in Vegas and New York, but I’m not a huge beef eater. Plus, I like mine on the well side, and it’s kind of criminal to do that to A5. It’s too fatty for me though when it’s less cooked.

The steak looked so delicious! It must have been so sad that you couldn’t eat it all.
It was really good! I felt so bad being so wasteful!
Since most tea in Japan is unsweetened, it probably is going to throw off most Americans lol
LOL! I'm not from the south, so we don't drink sweet tea where I am :rotfl: I think it was a rooibos which I hadn't noticed when I bought it, rooibos is not my "cup of tea" :hyper:

I saw the DCL announcement, that is amazing! And LOL, I think they were happy to cook things more but lately I like my steak almost mooing so it was fine for me :rotfl2:

6/3: Tokyo (Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter Pt 1)

Not sure what time I got up, but I left my room around 8AM. I had late checkout thanks to my lowly Discoverist status (seems like the Japanese Hyatts were great about giving late checkout) but didn't think I'd make it back in time, so I checked out and shipped my bag. It was 4378¥ to ship my two check bags to the Disneyland Hotel. It did take a few minutes for the front desk to fill out the forms and measure my bags, but no issues at all, and I was done before 8:20.

I missed my train by a minute as there were so many elevators and escalators, so I had to wait another 13 minutes for the next one. Thankfully lots of people got off at Shibuya Station so I had a seat, I had my carry on with me so I was glad for that! I think it was actually one of the emptiest trains I ended up on the entire trip, must not have been a commuter route since it was a Monday morning.

IMG_5314.jpeg

I think I had to transfer once and then I finally made it to the Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour, just in time for my timed reservation! The station was themed to Harry Potter, so cute!

Since I was there before 9:30, which was the first or second window, there were still plenty of lockers outside the studio. They are plenty big for a carry on, I believe they have storage inside if you have larger items or they run out of lockers.

I purposely bought a Monday ticket since I wanted it to be a bit less crowded, and I think weekends get pretty busy. Mornings are also recommended for lower crowds. It didn't seem too busy at all when I was there.

I headed in at 9:30, though you buy a time slot, I don't think you strictly need to be there. You end up in a waiting room and they fill it up for a while. I went in at 9:32 and we were done with the initial welcome video at 9:48, and a second video in a small theater followed that. Finally, we entered the studio tour at 9:55.

Though I could post literally a million photos, I'm trying to hold back and will just post a few!

Loved the moving staircases!

IMG_5349.jpeg

There were lots of photo/video ops, I skipped them since you have to pay a fee, and I thought it would be a bit awkward being solo. Stuff like being a moving portrait, riding a broomstick, watching a quidditch match, etc. The tour is super English friendly, all of the signs included English, and the videos at the start of the tour had subtitles.

There were props throughout the tour as well, so you could take photos on your own. I had no trouble asking other tourists or staff to take photos for me!

IMG_5388.jpeg

I loved the library photo op, there was a nice worker there who when I asked to take my photo, she even moved the sign saying not to touch things out of the photo for me, and then had me do multiple poses :hyper:

IMG_5413.jpeg

The forbidden forest was honestly so scary since it was really dark and life sized, especially the spider section! There's a chicken exit to skip the spiders I'm pretty sure!

IMG_5419.jpeg

After the forest is the cafe and outdoor section at the halfway point. I made it there around 10:45 and did some of the outdoor photo ops before having lunch.

IMG_5443.jpeg

IMG_5461.jpeg

It was 3400¥ for Hogwarts plate (which came with a drink, I got the melon soda) and small bottled water, definitely on the pricier side! There was a short line when I made it back to the cafe around 11:10.

IMG_5469.jpeg

IMG_5521.jpeg

This was decent, nothing special but it did the job. The peas were surprisingly good! The chips portion made me laughed definitely not in the USA :rotfl2:

I didn't do the Umbridge Tea, it was pretty expensive but I think you could sign up there.

IMG_5517.jpeg

6/3: Tokyo (Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter Pt 2)

With a heavy heart I skipped the Butterbeer :hyper: I really wanted it but I had a melon soda with my meal and didn't really need more sugar after that.

IMG_5513.jpeg

There were several more outdoor photo ops including giant chess pieces, the Knight Bus, and more.

IMG_5475.jpeg

You could go inside Number Four, Privet Drive which was sooo cool!

IMG_5508.jpeg

There was a small shop at the station shortly after reentering the tour, and I purchased the Hedwig ears. They were around $14 USD so I couldn't resist. Had to get the classic 9 3/4 picture of course! They had like 3 or 4 of them so no waits.

IMG_5538.jpeg

I thought the Ministry section was very cool, it has me excited for Epic Universe and the American Ministry.

IMG_5552.jpeg

Towards the end of the tour there was a lot of stuff on props and puppets and more technical stuff which was really interesting. There was a video on how they create the sound effects which was particularly interesting (and in English).

There is a Diagon Alley of course, which is different enough from the ones in Universal Parks to still be really neat to see.

IMG_5610.jpeg

Seeing the large replica of the castle and grounds at the end, with the music that always plays at the end of the movies, almost had me crying :rotfl:

IMG_5614.jpeg

I grew up reading HP and going to the midnight releases of the last couple books and movies, and so this tour was so much fun for me. I'd say it's a must do for any HP fan. I'm not sure if it's that different from the London version, so if you've already done that there's probably no need to do it. But it is far cheaper! I think it was 6500¥ for my weekday ticket.

I finished the tour at 12:40 so just over three hours including my lunch. I'd say I went through thing pretty quickly, if you want to do the interactive videos and read everything you will need a lot more time. You could probably breeze through it in two hours if you really had to, but I think planning for 3-4 is a good idea.

Then of course, there's the shop...I spent almost an hour there! It was the biggest and best HP shop I've seen, way better than the US park shops (though not a whole lot for clothing). I somehow spent under $100 USD even though I got a ton of stuff. I'll post a haul in my next post.

There's another large dining area at the front so you can eat before/after your tour if you prefer. There were some cool booths shaped like chocolate frog cards. Theming was simply amazing!

Outside there were several nice sculptures and beautiful hydrangeas.

IMG_5648.jpeg

IMG_5655.jpeg

IMG_5646.jpeg

100% recommend this tour and it's very easy to get to by train, even if it does take like 40-50 minutes from many parts of Tokyo. I think if you're in the Shinjiku area it's easier to get to compared to Shibuya. I absolutely loved it!

Getting on the train to head back was a bit confusing, Google Maps takes you to a station entrance right by the studio but there was a huge sign that the station was NOT the station Google said it was. So obviously that's a common problem. So then I had to find the correct station on my own, without Google Maps! It was like 2 blocks away and was not the first direction I headed. At least it wasn't pouring rain, since I had to roll my carry on with me!

Here is my haul and some more shopping photos:

Less than $100 USD so I think I did a good job :rotfl2:

IMG_5919.jpeg

IMG_5908.jpeg

IMG_5907.jpeg

They had a lot of blind box stuff I had to resist from buying, what would I do with all of it? :rotfl:

IMG_5635.jpeg

All of the chibi art was so cute and like half off so I got some keychains and coasters of it.

IMG_5638.jpeg

Would have bought this chess set if I were a chess player:rotfl2:

IMG_5630.jpeg

I'm not planning to go back to Universal until Epic Universe opens but you bet I'll wear my new ears.

IMG_5906.JPG

I bought those ears for a friend at Universal Japan. It looks like the HP experience was cool. I had to scroll quickly to avoid spoilers, because we are doing the one outside London next week.

Thanks for linking the Borderless videos! We did get to the cube room. I only remembered after remembering that I told DD to watch out for the corners lol.

Thanks for the Borderless map! Visiting with a preschooler, it will definitely make it a bit easier to navigate (and find the all-important and time critical toilets when necessary).

Enjoy it in London! If I make it to London ever, I wouldn't mind doing it again. The ears are so funny, I'm not sure if they sell them in the US but I'm sure they'd cost twice as much if they did.

I can't believe I missed it! And LOL I would probably have injured myself now that you say that :rotfl2:

The map is so necessary! Even with it I still had trouble finding some of the rooms. A lot of the spots where they space out entry are one way and you end up in a different area, so I had to do so much backtracking.

We are planning an AYCE Wagyu experience too. I have a feeling we will not be eating as much of it as I would like to think we will. LOL

I just want to let you know how much I am enjoying your trip report! It is helping me survive the long slow countdown to my own trip! (99 days and Counting)

Did you see younger children on this tour and did they look like they were having fun? Wondering how many years I have to wait before taking my 5yo for her to enjoy the whole experience 😆 We just finished reading Chamber of Secrets but we're going to pause since the story gets progressively darker.

LOL! It would be more fun as a leisurely meal with others, for sure. I didn't have anyone to talk with so I just ended up eating and filling up really fast :rotfl2: I think I would have done better if they hadn't had all those appetizer courses!

And thanks so much! As long as one person enjoys reading it's worth writing for me! I enjoy reflecting on trips via TRs. It all happens so fast in the moment and I forget all the little things, so all my little notes to myself are bringing back a lot of things I'd forgotten.

I didn't see a ton of children but it was a weekday and I think this tour is more locals / Japanese tourists than foreign tourists, so everyone was still in school. (I really didn't see that many children at Disney either, for that matter, probably since Golden Week had just passed.)

I think school age children would definitely still have a lot of fun! It was more interactive than I expected. There were quite a few props / areas where you could take your own pictures and touch things. I think I saw the most children there when watching the penseive! I think kids would get a kick out of the video stuff, I don't think it was too expensive, I just felt weird doing that stuff alone. But like recording a video for the moving portraits, cheering on a quidditch match, using the floo. The tour itself was pretty mild, really the only scary part was the forbidden forest. But I think there is a bypass to skip the area entirely. If you can get through the second movie then I think they would be old enough to enjoy! Really as long as they've seen a couple movies, it brings that to life.

6/3: Tokyo (The Okura Tokyo + Ginza Shopping)

I was excited for my next hotel, The Okura Tokyo. I just booked one night since it was eligible for the Amex FHR program, and with my Platinum card I get an annual $200 statement credit for booking an eligible hotel. The program also comes with great perks, for this hotel I also got $100 hotel credit (planned to use for room service), 12PM early check in upon availability (didn't use), 4PM guaranteed late check out, daily breakfast, and room upgrade when available. I like the program since it stacks with loyalty benefits, so when you stay at Marriotts, Hiltons, etc you still earn points even when booking through FHR. I paid around $460 USD but after all those credits, I thought it was a pretty good deal!

After leaving the Harry Potter studio, I was onto the train around 2PM. It was actually named a bit differently than Google Maps indicated but the time was right so I got on anyways, and it ended up being right. I got a bit lost when transferring to the Ginza line and a nice Japanese woman noticed my confusion and asked if I needed help.

Finding the Okura was a bit of a challenge, the hotel is massive and can be entered from so many sides, so I wasn't really sure where the lobby was. It's also on a bit of a hill so I ended up doing a lot of uphill walking. Well later on I discovered that if you're walking up the hill you're doing it wrong, there are escalators from the bottom of the hill if you know where to look, but it wasn't intuitive at all :rotfl2:

I did finally find the right place and they whisked away my bags and helped check me in. I actually went to the wrong building at first (there are two, Prestige and Heritage) but they brought me to the right place, they were all very nice. The guy rolling my bag for me completed my sunglasses, which I thought was funny since they were like $2 from the clearance bins at Target, and this was a 5 star hotel :hyper:

Check in was very quick, I had paid a small amount extra for a Prestige view room in hopes of a better upgrade, and I think it paid off as I was upgraded to a corner room!

While I was checking in at 3PM, they were literally rolling out a red carpet at the lobby entrance. I didn't catch who was coming in but that's the kind of place it was, old money and foreign dignitary vibes for sure!

IMG_5659.jpeg

They brought me up to my room and showed me around the room, they do that at all the nice hotels in Japan!

Wow, this room was amazing. These are my pictures, not stock photos, I swear! :hyper:

IMG_5668.jpeg

The corner room was MASSIVE! It would be so great to have a longer stay there.

IMG_5678.jpeg

The bathtub even had a TV, though I didn't get a chance to use it!

But the best part of the room was the view! I couldn't believe it, I had a view of Tokyo Tower! This was totally unexpected and the best surprise ever.

IMG_5663.jpeg

IMG_5682.jpeg

There was even a walk in closet!

IMG_5665.jpeg

A lot of the hotels had packaged treats as gifts, it was fun trying all of them. These were leaf pies and there were some nuts as well.

IMG_5674.jpeg

Ofter enjoying the room for a bit, I headed back out to do a bit of shopping. The Okura is pretty close to a station, it took a bit of practice navigating in that area as a lot of the entrances/exits were inside other buildings. Plus getting in/out of the Okura itself was its own adventure.

I headed to Ippodo in Marunouchi which is funny because I had just been in that area and didn't realize there was a location there, oops. I bought two 20g containers of their more expensive matcha even though I know nothing about matcha. It was 3780¥ for both, which I think is way cheaper than ordering it in the US. I think it was the Ummon and Seiun varieties, I haven't tried them yet. I started with my Matcha Stand Maruni matcha since that's a lower grade and I don't wanna start with the good stuff first! :rotfl2:

It was quite rainy that evening, luckily I didn't have to walk far to the stations. I headed to Ginza next, to check out the flagship Uniqlo.

IMG_5696.jpeg

It had like 12 stories! It was pretty busy and a lot of the floors had the same things, and the floors were small. The regular Uniqlo I went to at a mall earlier this trip had all the same stuff, so I recommend shopping at a less popular location and then just checking out the flagship if you're interested in seeing it. Not sure I'd bother going back but it was fun riding the escalators up and up. I rode a LOT of escalators in Japan!

IMG_5698.jpeg

I did find a Peanuts shirt in my mom's size that was out at the other location I was at, so that was a success.

I checked out GU, which had so much cute stuff! I am usually a S-M in the US and generally M was okay for me at these stores in Japan. Some of the stuff just fit a bit oddly, but that happens in the US as well. I didn't find anything I liked enough to get but I also wasn't really in a clothes buying mood, being wet from the rain and tired from the long day on my feet. GU wasn't very busy, especially compared to Uniqlo, even though they were practically next to each other.

IMG_5702.jpeg

I saw so little of Ginza that I definitely want to go back, there are so many shops!
