Can't contain myself this time. DD13 just got picked in the lottery for Sturgis Charter School, Newsweek's pick for #1 high school in Massachusetts and #28 high school in the US:banana::banana: Nearly 400 kids applied and 100 were accepted (by lottery) and I just knew she'd get in, she has really good luck. The school is IB so obviously very challenging but she's got it in her and I just know she'll do great! There you go, my first real brag! And just because you need to be fair, DS is also a great kid, in the Air Force and doing fantastic as well!

Let me be the first to congratulate you and your DD! I can only imagine how exciting something like this would be. Brag on! You deserve it :)

That's wonderful news-! You should be proud-go ahead and brag! :)

Congrats to your daughter. Hope she has a great time in her new school.

Totally understand congrats..DS got into a Magnet school last yr...there was almost 500 applications for 68 spots and we are talking about kindergarden! He is now in 1st grade and we are so lucky. It is to bad that all schools can't be that great!

Congratulations! That is great news!
I hope your dd has a wonderful high school experience!! :thumbsup2

Congratulations to your daughter for being selected to attend the charter school! Congratulations to you, too, for having two great kids!

That's great!! I know she's proud too! I can't get over there only being 400 applicants. Here, our only IB Newsweek charted school has over 1000 applicants each year for around 200 spots. It's only in the top 100 and a public school to boot.

Actually, it was a record year for applicants but there are so many variables...the regional high school DD would have attended is ranked very high as well so it's not a choice between a so-so school and a fantastic school, more like a great school v. fantastic IB program:)

Transportation is an issue for alot of parents. For us, the bus commute is 30 minutes to the public school by school bus with a stop just down the street or 20 minutes to the charter school by either car-pooling or public transportation which requires me to drive her 10 minutes to the stop and pay $50/week for her pass. Worth it to me but even more difficult for students further away.

The charter just turned IB FOR ALL meaning that every student must take the AP/IB course load. Some parents think it might be too challenging for their kids and/or to "academic-laden" and not enough activities for what some call well balanced kids. The sports program is decent but if a kid is heavy into sports and intends to play in college, this might not be the place for them.

DD has about 3 hours of homework each night right now (she is in a charter middle school) and from all I've heard, her freshmen year will likely be a bit easier while they try to figure out where everyone stands academically. I've been told she'll most likely have a lot of review. This is the one negative factor of the situation. I hope she doesn't get bored. A bored 14 year old is never good:rotfl:
